TAKE UP YOUR CROSS DAILY Happy Fathers’ Day
Orlando, Florida Charleston, South Carolina—First Anniversary June 18th
THE IMPACT of the scriptures upon me this week came as a jolt. I was basking in the spiritual joy of Jesus’ healing of the woman who washed his feet with her tears (last Sunday); and the impact of the two widows whom Jesus raised back to life which we heard the week before. Then last Monday I picked up the Scriptures and saw the reading from Zechariah and I was pummeled right back into Good Friday
and Holy Saturday — “they will look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall grieve over him as one tries over a firstborn.” I was not ready for that quick change. Then I read the Gospel and came to the realization that it was a question of Identity. Jesus asks “Who do people say that I am?”
IT WAS THE current events that said to me, maybe the readings for today are just right. WE CELEBRATE Fathers’ Day today. I have heard enough men in my life say to me what a
difference it makes to them when their first child is born. There is an intersection between not being a father and becoming a father. There is an identity change that is rooted in one’s being that was not there before. It becomes like an internal tattoo. No matter what one will always be a father. I realize that this takes some getting used to and the men with whom I have spoken live this new reality with job and take on its responsibilities with care and planning. This is an identity change.
ANOTHER window into the readings this Sunday was the terrible shooting and awful experience of the LGBT community in Orlando. Understanding oneself and becoming comfortable with oneself and ironing out what it is that makes one a whole and complete person, is not a simple task in our very secular culture. We live in a culture where self-understanding is difficult to arrive at and where self-understanding in the light of the Gospel is very difficult to discern for some in our culture. Our culture never asks us what is it that God wants from me? How can I be a faithful person while recognizing who I am, in the light of the Gospel? Regardless of where one stands on the issue of sexual identity, in an individual’s life there is no standing in the middle. My understanding is that where there is rigid, absolute, denial of one’s feelings in one area there will be violent and massive and destructive explosions within that person in other areas. (Our feelings and emotions run our lives like a subconscious train that never stops). How do we deal with these emotions? Once again “who am I?” “Who am I in the Body of Christ?”
THERE WAS yet another window into these readings that i found myself meditation on and wondering and praying about. June 18th is the First anniversary of the killing of the nine members of Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston South Carolina. The Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, the Joint Conference met in Charleston and were able to visit Mother Emmanuel last July. When I think of the young man who was accepted into their Bible Study meeting and prayed with them and participated in the reading of the Scripture for more than a half hour, and then stood and shot those very people with whom he prayed, there is a total mix - up within him as to who he really is. Is he really that man who hates African Americans to that degree that he can just shoot them? His inner Identity was linked to NeoNazi and white supremacist theories. In these two examples where is critical thinking, logical thinking? Where is the regular human concern that says I must care for my sister and I must care for my brother?
IN TODAY’S scripture we wonder what the answers are for the questions: who we are, why we exist, why we live or die? “Once while Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples near him..” he ask those questions who do people say I am and who do you say I am? The very first thing that comes to mind is the necessity of real and serious prayer before God. We need to know God in our hearts before we can really know who we are. When Luke wrote this Gospel abut the year 85AD some fifty years after Jesus ascended into heaven his faith community was discouraged and losing faith. Luke suspected it would be a long time before Jesus would come in glory and the end of the present age would be upon us. His is the only gospel that says we must take up our Cross daily. Following the Lord is not just an emotional assent it is a life-long and slow slog over a lifetime with ups and downs, sins and forgiveness. In their search for understanding themselves and their identity
we have many, many examples, Archbishop Oscar Romero, Martin Luther King, Jr, Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa, Thomas Merton, Josephine Bahita, Thea Bowman, Augustus Tolton—and countless other saints.
TAKING UP THE CROSS, and following Jesus means acquiring a self-expending posture that seeks to affirm life in all its fullness. One can read this gospel and think that the Cross only means personal asceticism. It means a readiness to renounce one’s life but more than just the renouncing, it means accepting an act of love for the sake of the people of the whole world. It means I know myself well enough and I realize God’s passionate love me that I will do all I can so that his Kingdom can real all, even those who deny him and those who are ignorant of his tremendous love. " Our identity must indeed bear the marks of Jesus' identity in our witness and human relations.” ________________________________________________________________________________

SYNOD '16 A Synod is both an event and a process. The purpose of Synod '16 is to assist
Archbishop Vigneron in the exercise of governing the Catholic community in southeast Michigan - specifically focusing on how we can make evangelization our first and most important pastoral activity. The Synod will enable us to begin a conversation about how our parishes, schools, and other Catholic institutions might become evangelizing, missionary communities.
The Synod will take place from November 18th -20TH". During this time, parishioner, lay minister, clergy, and religious representatives will gather to discuss how we might establish practices that encourage and nurture evangelization in all our Catholic institutions. THE DIALOGUE GATHERINGS
Before the Synod takes place, the parishioners of the Archdiocese are called upon to share their thoughts and experiences during a series of Dialogue Gatherings. The purpose of these gatherings is to hear directly from the faithful and identify the most important issues that should be addressed at the Synod.
During the Dialogue Gatherings, participants will be asked to reflect upon and share their responses to several questions related to the overarching themes of the evangelization initiative, Unleash the Gospel: to encounter Jesus, grow daily as his disciples, and give witness to the power of his mercy. These gatherings will encourage open, honest, and respectful sharing of each participant's perspective and listening of the perspectives of others.
The gatherings will take place in local churches, schools, or other gathering spaces throughout the Archdiocese from March - June. The gathering for St. Charles Lwanga will take place on Monday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Intentions: The Intentions of Parish Fathers and Father-Figures
PROCESSIONAL: A Follower of Christ - #628
LORD HAVE MERCY
GLORIA
OPENING PRAYER
First Reading Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1 Thus says the LORD: I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem
a spirit of grace and petition; and they shall look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and they shall grieve over him as one grieves over a firstborn.
On that day the mourning in Jerusalem shall be as great as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.
On that day there shall be open to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, a fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness.
Psalm Response: Psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 My soul is thirsting for you O Lord, thirsting for you my God, thirsting for you my God" #915
Second Reading: Galatians 3:26-29 Brothers and sisters: Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into
Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s children, heirs according to the promise.
ALLELUIA
Verse before the Gospel My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.
Gospel Luke 9:18-24 Once when Jesus was praying by himself, and the disciples were with him, he asked them,
“Who do the crowds say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.” He scolded them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”
Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”
HOMILY
PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and
invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all
ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
