Good News of Jesus Working through our Borromeo Family

What a Beautiful Parish Picnic!   I heard this so many times last weekend. So many loved the Outdoor Mass (even though our prayers for the Cardinals did not help at that hour!) and the beautiful music. The Ladies Sodality Booth was beautiful. The Silent Auction was beauti-ful. All the many workers were beautiful with joyful and gen-erous love. The smiles on young faces were beautifully radi-ant and contagious. And especially God gave us such beauti-ful weather and such a beautiful Church Family here at Bor-romeo. We are all so deeply grateful to so many who gave so many hours and days to make it all go so beautifully and smoothly organized, especially our chairs:      Jason and Beth Norviel God love you all!

Getting Ready for the New Roman Missal Beginning November 26/27

A time for renewed attendance and participation and love for our Mass

Let’s all together and each of us internally and externally re-new our “full, conscious, active and fruitful participation” in the Mass.

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES: Penitential Rite and Gloria (which will be practiced

at the end of the homily and will be used every time the Gloria is sung from then on)

PART ONE Gathering Rites

Coming together, assembling, is at the heart of our Sun-day worship. The reason behind each of the ritual actions of the first part of the Mass can be found in this word: gathering. The purpose of these rites is to bring us together into one body—the Body of Christ—ready to listen to God’s word and to break bread together.

GREETERS. In many churches today there will be some-one at the door to greet you as you arrive for Sunday Mass: We all like to be greeted and welcomed when we gather for a celebration. If the greeters (and we all should serve this func-tion for one another) recognize that you are new to the parish, they will give you a special hello and be sure that you have the service books (or missalette or hymnal) and participation aids necessary to pray well with the assembly.

USE OF WATER. One of the first things Catholics do when they come to church is dip their right hand in water and make the Sign of the Cross. This ritual is a reminder of our Baptism: We were baptized with water and signed with the cross. At every Mass we renew our promises to die to sin. The Eucharist begins in Baptism; it is Baptism that brings us to Church.

GENUFLECTION. In medieval Europe, it was a custom to go down on one knee (to genuflect) before a king or person of rank. This secular mark of honor gradually entered the Church, and people began to genuflect to honor the altar and the presence of Christ in the tabernacle before entering the pew. Today, many people express their reverence with an even older custom and bow to the altar before taking their place.

POSTURE, SONG. When the Mass begins, everyone stands up. Standing is the traditional posture of the Christian at prayer: It expresses our attentiveness to the word of God and our readiness to carry it out. Often we begin by singing together. What better way to gather than to unite our thoughts and our voices in common word, rhythm and melody.

GREETING. The priest will ask us to begin with the sign of the cross, again reminding us of Baptism, and will greet us, saying, “The Lord be with you.” You will hear this greeting frequently. It means many things. Like “good day,” it can mean both ”hello” and “good bye.” It is both a wish (May the Lord be with you) and a profound statement of faith (as you assemble for worship, the Lord is with you). It is an ancient biblical greeting: Boaz returned from Bethle-hem (we read in the Book of Ruth 2:4) and said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you!” The ritual response to this greeting is the formula, “And with your spirit,” by which we return the hello, the good wishes, the statement of faith.

PENITENTIAL ACT, GLORIA. All the other ritual acts of this first part of the Mass are intended to gather us together into a worshiping assembly. Sometimes we are asked to pause and recall our common need for salvation (the Penitential Act). Sometimes the hymn “Glory to God in the highest” is sung or recited at this point. The “Gloria” has been a part of the Mass since about the sixth century! These longer hymns and re-sponses are found in the service book (or prayer card) at our seat.

COLLECT PRAYER. At the close of this first part of the Mass the priest will ask us to join our minds and hearts in prayer, and after a few moments of silence he will collect our intentions into one prayer to which we all respond “Amen,” a Hebrew word for “So be it.”

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

“My God will fully supply whatever you need . . . “ PHILIPPIANS 4:19

The secret to being a good steward is to trust that God will supply us with all that we need. However, we have to let go of the expectation that we should also have all that we want. Good stewards must learn to live differently. We must turn away from materialism, want less, share more and learn to be grateful for God’s many blessings.

We pray that, as good stewards, we may learn to recognize the difference between what we need and what we want, trusting that God will always give us all that we need.

St. Charles Borromeo School

Dear Parishioners:

Did you know that not only are the students expected to be learning at SCB, but also the faculty? That’s right! The fac-ulty and I are always investigating ways to improve our teaching skills. We will be attending a workshop tomorrow enti-tled Executive Functioning and ADHD From a Developmental Perspective. This workshop will help us understand and work with children with unique learning needs.

The Right START program, sponsored by the Archdiocesan Respect Life Apostolate, will be presented to our 8th grade students this week. This program teaches students about making choices that are wise, healthy, and holy choices.

Thank you for your prayers and support for the success of our school.

God bless, Mrs. Ann Hoffman

Dear Parishioners:

Today we welcome back our Parish School of Religion students who enjoyed a day off as our community celebrated our Parish Picnic last week! We were blessed with beautiful weather and your help volunteering in game booths and the prize room is very much appreciated. In the month of October, we look forward to our first grade parents visiting on October 30th for our annual Pumpkin Carving Prayer Day!

Parents of First Reconciliation Students!! Reminder! Today, we welcome parents of our First Reconciliation students to the St. Charles Room following the 8:30 Mass for the first of two parent meetings to share our reconciliation experiences. The next meeting for par-ents is Wednesday, October 12 at 7pm in the Borromeo café. We look forward to celebrating the sacrament on Monday, November 28, 7pm in Church.

As our parish begins looking at the parts of the Mass, I’m reminded how blessed we are to have two priests in residence, daily Mass, and five Sunday Masses. My parents live on Table Rock Lake and their parish has recently undergone a change—they have a parish administrator, a priest who visits on the weekends to celebrate Sunday Mass. They have no weekday Masses and no priest on call 24/7. We are blessed at Borromeo to have our priests, two deacons, and Sister Raquel to assist us in our worship and daily living of the Gospel messages.

I’m always touched by children during the liturgy. Whether they participate in the Children’s Liturgy or stay with Mom and Dad during Mass, they want to be involved. Parents can help children enter the rit-ual with increased reverence by reminding them how much we repeat in the Mass week after week. We always have an opening procession, sign of the cross, opening prayer and readings. We always listen to the priest or deacon talk about the readings. The table is always set and we always share the meal. Finally, we are sent out into the world to share the Good News with all we meet and to be Jesus to others! Truly, we are blessed!

God bless, Mrs. Becca McCullough

Catholics Come Home Do you know someone away from the Catholic Church? Help bring your friends and loved ones back! Did you know that the average American spends 38 hours per week consuming media, with television and the internet as the top two sources?

This Advent the Archdiocese of St. Louis will be partnering with CatholicsComeHome.org to air inspiring TV commercials throughout our archdiocese inviting those away from the faith back ‘home’ to the Catholic Church! Archbishop Carlson asks that you pray for the success of this evangelization effort and contribute generously to the special collection this weekend, October 8/9. Visit CatholicsComeHome.org to view the TV commercials that, with your support, will be airing diocesan wide the week before Christmas through much of January 2012! God bless you for your support!

As we study the letter of James, we will find a way to become men and women of integrity and peace. You are invited to join with a small group of people who will meet weekly for 1 to 1½ hours once a week in a parishioner’s home to study and discuss the advice given us in the let-ter of James. Groups will be formed from the names received from those who sign up on the forms found in the back of church. Study will begin this week (October 9th) but there is still time for you to sign up. Please com-plete the yellow form and drop it in the box. Please in-dicate on the form when you would like to meet.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM Month One—Developing Baby

Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has developed the foundations of her brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. Her heart began to beat on the 21st day, pumping blood through its own circulatory system and the blood type can be different from her mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of her mother to give her the most precious gift of all—the gift of life.

Don’t forget to get those quilt raffle tickets turned in for a chance to win a beautiful quilt! We draw a lucky winner the 1st of each month. If you need some tickets, call Barb at 947-3939.

In the narthex of church you will notice a tree with sev-eral bags hanging on it. These are the “busy bags,” crafted by our Junior Girl Scout Troop, and are meant for parents of little ones to grab one on the way into Mass. The bag contains small, quiet items to keep the little ones busy during Mass. Then, we ask that you hang the bag back up on your way out of Mass for those to enjoy after you.

On Sunday, October 23rd, the Catholic Church in every parish and diocese of the world prays for all Missionaries, and supports them with our donations to sustain them and the people they serve in over 1,150 mission territories through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Missionaries make God’s love visible. Yet they cannot do this without our support and our prayers. Please use the envelopes for World Mission Sunday. Our Holy Fa-ther, Pope Benedict XVI thanks you for your support of our Missionaries! To learn more about World Mission Sunday, visit www.iamamissionary.org.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

Parish Social Ministry Regional Gathering You are invited “To Love and Serve the Lord,” a conference held October 21/22 at the Cardinal Rigali Center. The con-ference, sponsored by Catholic Charities St. Louis, will focus on how a parish can live out the Gospel call to serve all who are in need. We’ll explore the connections between our faith and our actions on behalf of charity and justice. We’ll learn concrete “how to’s” of organizing parish ministries and working effectively to advocate for those who are vulner-able in any way. The weekend will include inspiring keynotes, practical workshops and Mass with Archbishop Carlson. Workshops will focus on four areas: direct service, advocacy, leadership development and immigration. Registration is $50 before October 7. For details see www.ccstl.org or contact Greg Rohde at [email protected] or 314-367-5500 x1155, and check with Father John for reduced fee.

Open House at the Historic 1791 Borromeo Log Church The annual parish open house will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 11am to 2pm at the Historic 1791 Borromeo Log Church. The church is located on its original site in the 400 block of South Main St. in St. Charles. Photos of the reconstruction, the original 1789 petition to King Carlos, and reproduced parish registry books will be on display. A short program will take place between 1pm and 1:30pm. The program will include music, an early history of the parish, a bio of some of the early members, and a description of 18th century building techniques. The volunteers who built and main-tain the church are hosting the open house. The log church is open to the public every day April through October and weekends only Novem-ber through March.

Historic 1791 Borromeo Log Church Reconstructed 2004-2008 A small group of volunteers and two local historians have rebuilt the 18th century vertical log Borromeo church on its original site in St. Charles, MO. This is the first time in 200 years that a French-style vertical log building has been constructed in this area—perhaps in all of North America. The reconstruction was made possible by the private donations of individuals inspired by the early history of this old French village, and generous parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo Church, the City of St. Charles, the Office of Mayor Patti York, three private donors, the in-kind services of a long list of local companies, and the volunteer labor of a small dedi-cated crew. The Historic 1791 Log Church is a project of JQH Historic Preservation for Education, a non-profit Missouri corpora-tion. The intention of this project was to provide, during construction, an on-going educational demonstration of the building tech-niques and architectural style of the early French colonists and, when finished, a focal point for continuing cultural education and historical interpretation. The work was done completely by hand with period tools in the manner of the 18th century. The building measures, roughly, 15 by 25 feet. The cedar vertical logs are 13 feet in length. They sit three feet in the ground and are hewn on front and back surfaces from the top of the ground level, leaving the underground portion of the log in its natural round state. Adjoining sides of the logs are channeled on both sides from top to ground level to hold the rock and lime fill. The oak trusses are held together with pinned mor-tise and tenon joints as are the door and window frames. The log church was rebuilt on its original site—the north half of Block 28 between Jackson and Tompkins on the west side of South Main St. The reconstructed church may not sit on the exact footprint of the original as we have not identified the exact place-ment of the 1791 church. Construction materials are rot and termite resistant cedar logs; split cedar shake shingles; oak roofing tim-

Joke of the Week A nurse on the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones’ chests, would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their own heart. Their eyes would always light up with awe, but she never got a response equal to four year old David’s comment. Gently she tucked the stethoscope into his ears and placed the disk over his heart. “Listen,” she said, “What do you suppose that it?” He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap - tap - tapping deep in his chest. Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin and he asked, “Is that Jesus knocking?”

USED SHOE DRIVE

We are still collecting your shoes! Bring your used or unworn shoes tied or rubber banded together to the col-lection bins at the back of church and at school!

The Shoeman turns the shoes into money which is utilized to purchase well rigging systems, water filtration systems, and other items necessary to provide clean water in developing countries.

Please call the fol-lowing number and ask for Carol Wil-mes: 314-323-9979. Arrangements can be made to pick up the items.

Grief and Loss Support . . . Many parishioners and/or their family and friends are experiencing loss of various kinds. St. Charles Borromeo Grief Ministry will offer a 4-week program on ways to help you through this difficult time. The program features a videotape series by Fr. Joe Kempf entitled “No One Cries the Wrong Way.” Fr. Joe and others share their experiences of faith dur-ing times of great challenge. Fr. Joe reinforces that as we open ourselves to God, we find that the God who suffers with us can transform our pain and losses, giving them purpose and meaning, bringing new life. The sessions will be held on the four Mondays in October at 7pm at Mary Kutchback’s home, 1315 N. 5th. For more

Classes begin October 20. Sign up in the back of church this weekend. For more information, contact David or Carol Bourn, 636-947-3140.
