#386—City of God (12:00)

St. Charles Borromeo Church June 3, 2018

This Sunday, at the 12:00 Noon Mass, we celebrate

the thirty-five years of faithful diaconal service rendered

to St Charles Borromeo Parish by Deacon John Talerico.

John Talerico and his classmates were ordained to the

Permanent Diaconate by Bishop Anthony Pilla on June 4, 1983.

Deacon John has served St Charles since that day.

In the time after Easter, our first reading at Mass was taken

from the Acts of the Apostles; there we hear about the Order of the

Diaconate in the early Church. Those first deacons exercised a

ministry of liturgical assistance and charity. In later years, the

diaconate lost its individual identity and it became a step on the

road to priesthood. The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965)

called for the Diaconate to be restored to its original state. This

would include ordaining married men. Deacon training programs

were established in many dioceses. The first Permanent Deacon in

Cleveland was Joseph Newman.

In 1983, Deacon John and his classmates were “trailblazers” as

they brought back to life this renewed ministry in the Church—after

1,500 years!

Here at St Charles, we have been blessed with Deacon John’s

thirty-five years of faithful service. Deacons can baptize, marry, and

preach. Deacon John is most faithful to our Sunday Noon Mass in

addition to his help with major liturgical services and also being

“on call” to assist the bishops as they travel around the Diocese.

Many thanks and every blessing to you, Deacon John, and to

your family on your thirty-fifth anniversary.

Next Sunday, June 10, at the 12:00Noon Mass, we will thank

Father Ryan Mann for his four years of dedicated, honorable, and

faithful priestly service to St Charles. Father Ryan came to us,

newly ordained, in 2014. From the beginning it was clear that

Father Ryan brought welcome and unique gifts. Friendly, outgoing,

and hard-working, Father Ryan was quickly called upon by various

folks—both from inside and outside the parish. I am confident he

will be remembered by many as “a favorite.” After next Sunday’s

Mass, there will be a reception in the Corrigan Gym. There we can

say goodbye and assure him of our gratitude and prayers. There

are envelopes in the pews if you would like to give Father Ryan a

parting note or gift. The actual transfer is effective Tuesday,

June 12. And on that day, our new associate, Father Christopher

Cox, will report to St Charles.

Our second Sellers Appreciation Drawing for $500 takes place

this Sunday evening. There will be six more $500 prizes awarded;

one on each of the next six Sundays. Each time you sell a sheet of

white or blue tickets, fill out another Sellers Appreciation ticket.

Carnival dates? Wednesday to Sunday July 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

During the first four weeks of Lent, St Charles Girl Scout Troop

70443 sponsored a Sock Collection for the poor and homeless. The

Troop has asked me to thank all of you who, together, donated more

than 2,500 pairs of socks. When asked what apparel is most needed

and welcome, the homeless say “warm, dry socks!” This was a

long, cold, wet winter. Your thoughtfulness and generosity helped

many.
