Merici Chapel… One month of 2016 is gone!! Now as we prepare for the Holy Season of Lent, let us stop & think that just as the months go by so fast — so are our lives. Are we preparing to meet Jesus when He calls us home? Spend some time with Him now — visit Merici Chapel & ask Him to help you as you continue on that homeward-bound journey..

Lent 2016 begins this week. There is a complete listing of our Lent, Holy Week, and Easter schedule in this bulletin. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at all Masses this Ash Wednesday,

February 10 at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00am and at 4:00 and 7:00pm. Also, please mark your calendar for this year’s Parish Lenten Retreat. Father Joseph Koopman, currently moral theology professor at St Mary Seminary (formerly associate pastor of St Charles Parish, 2001-2005) will direct the Retreat. Retreat presentations will be Sunday through Tuesday, March 13-15, at 7:30pm in church. Before we kick off Lent, our senior citizens are invited to attend the Mardi Gras this Tuesday, February 9, from 4:00 till 5:30pm in the Lower Parish Hall. Our Junior High Youth Ministry has quite an afternoon planned: a warm welcome, music, activities, and great refreshments will all be in good supply. See you Tuesday afternoon! The word “Lent” comes from an Old German word meaning “springtime.” It is during spring that we celebrate the gift of new life. The “forty days” duration of Lent comes from our Lord’s forty days of testing in the desert, reminiscent also of the forty years the Hebrews spent journeying to the Promised Land. The key to understanding Lent comes from our Baptism. We are called to live liturgically. Each year, we follow the events of our Lord’s life: announcement of His coming, His birth, His public ministry, and His passion, death, and resurrection. We do this as “church,’ which is the Mystical Body of Christ. We do not just remember or commemorate, we are called to become one with those events sacramentally. We are constantly called to conversion of heart. We must grow to be more like Him. In the early years of the Church, those adults preparing for baptism on Holy Saturday underwent a period of intense preparation. By the fourth century, that period was set at forty days and expanded to include those who were already baptized. While the converts made their baptismal vows, the rest of the congregation would repeat their baptismal promises. Lent is a time of self-examination. Through our various Lenten practices, we re-commit ourselves to the Christian life. The ashes placed on our foreheads, on Ash Wednesday, remind us of our mortality: “remember, you are dust…” The ashes come from the burning of palms from the prior year. The three traditional forms of Lenten penitence are taken from the Gospel: prayer (what we owe to God), fasting (what we owe ourselves), almsgiving (what we owe to others). Prior to 1966, Catholic Lenten practice was quite strict and very specific in its expectations. Today, only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence; all other Lenten Fridays are days of abstinence only. While “giving up” something for Lent (smoking--or other vices—bad habits, desserts, films, television, etc.) is still a legitimate Lenten practice, there should also be an emphasis on “doing something good” (trying new--or various--types of prayer, fostering good habits—virtues, performing charitable works.) The Gloria, a song of joy, is omitted at Lenten Sunday Mass. The Alleluia is not heard until Easter. Renewed during Lent, we are spiritually prepared to celebrate the Triduum (Sacred Three Days) of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.

The 2016 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is underway with an in-pew commitment process taking place this weekend. This is not a special collection; rather, the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal represents the chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland in order to support its mission of a society that stands united in its support of the “least among us.” Many parishioners have received a letter from Bishop Lennon requesting their support. If you have not received this letter, please respond to the in-pew commitment process today! If you have received the mailing, please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indicate that you have responded by mail.
