  • he St. Cecilia examination system has been in operation since

1974 and has been designed to provide students with an Tassessment which, in the early stages, examines their performance and technical skills, along with their aural perception

    and theoretical knowledge.

The Beginner, Junior, Preliminary and First Concert Certificate

examinations are best taken six-monthly. Each examination follows

naturally to the next and for this reason we advise that levels not be

missed or skipped. We are endeavouring to provide students with

an examination experience as much as an assessment. Dynamic

contrasts are expected in all grades, even when they are not printed

    on the music.

Our graded Performance Examinations are very innovative. Please

read the forwarding notes which have been especially written to

explain the purpose and philosophy behind these unique grades.

Students who demonstrate that they are familiar with the

requirements and who perform accurately and confidently as well

as musically, will always be successful. It is essential that teachers

ensure that all students who enter for any of our examinations are

    thoroughly prepared.

Each St. Cecilia grade is a unit which may be credited towards the

    St. Cecilia Diploma.

We hope you enjoy using this syllabus.

    Welcome to St. Cecilia!

  • General Regulations

    ST CECILIA MUSIC EXAMINATIONS

The St. Cecilia examination system has been successfully operating for over

30 years. It provides teachers and music students with an accredited system of

assessment based on sound educational and musical principles.

We are prepared to operate as flexibly as possible without compromising the

efficiency and standards which have been carefully set. But in order to allow

the system to work fairly and at a minimum cost to everyone concerned we

do rely on teachers and students adhering to a few basic regulations.

Ensure that entry forms are fully and accurately completed. Submit one

cheque or postal order with the completed entry form to cover the total

cost of examinations entered. We advise against paying by cash for security

reasons and will not take responsibility for problems arising in such

    circumstances.

Entry forms and fees must be submitted to the local coordinator on or before

the closing date. Late entries may not be accepted or will incur additional costs.

Refunds and credit of examination fees will not be made. A half-fee re-entry

permit will be issued to students who are able to supply a medical certificate

within one week of their scheduled examination appointment.

Students entered for one session may not transfer to another without payment

    of the full examination fee.

Once examination appointments have been made it is usually not possible to

change or rearrange times or to substitute appointments with other students

    without additional costs being levied.

By submitting an entry form with appropriate fees, it will be understood that

these regulations have been read, understood and accepted.

Should all the above regulations be met, teachers are entitled to deduct a 10%

commission from the total fees collected if their entry form contains no fewer

than ten candidates and payment is made by one cheque or postal order.

    St Cecilia Pianoforte Syllabus

    14

  • This syllabus has been designed to assist teachers and students in bridging the gap between Preliminary and Grade 1 in the St. Cecilia School of Music pianoforte examinations. This is a performance examination where the student must aim to give a polished, confident and above all, entertaining recital.

The pieces chosen for the syllabus have been included for their entertainment value and for their opportunity to encourage performance flair. A wide range of levels is therefore covered. Students should choose pieces that they not only enjoy but which may also challenge them. It is important that a balanced concert programme is presented.

This syllabus will provide students with an enjoyable and rewarding goal whilst they are also preparing for the Grade One requirements. A certificate will be awarded to all successful performers.

  • GRADES 1-8

    St Cecilia Pianoforte Performance Syllabus

The following syllabus has been designed to provide a structured course that will enable the student to develop his or her pianistic skills, whilst choosing music from a wide selection of pieces that should appeal to various personal tastes.

The candidate must play four items selected from four large lists of works. These include a study (to Grade 6) and three other pieces from different musical periods. While this syllabus is classically based, pieces of jazz and blues styles are included

th stin the 20 /21 century section from Grades 1 to 5.

There are opportunities to play works by female composers - e.g. Clara Schumann, Louise Farrenc and Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn's sister).

Candidates may also play complete works and this becomes mandatory in Grade 8, for Items 1 and 2, thus enabling the student to experience the typical format of many professional recitals.

The pieces chosen must form an interesting programme - as if for a concert.

It will be noted that, from Grade One to Five, several volumes of collected pieces have been included in particular, the Classics to Moderns series (ed. Denes Agay), and Essential Keyboard Repertoire (Hinson).

Consequently, some pieces in these grades have been listed a second time to indicate that they may also be found in these inexpensive volumes. This may be useful, as certain books in this series cover more than one grade level. Images (Joanne Maree) is an example of an Australian publication that covers Preliminary to Grade 4 levels.

The syllabus is an extension of the early grades of the St. Cecilia examination system: Beginners, Junior and Preliminary. Unlike these exams, however, the grades which follow have no ear test, or musicianship sections; nor are there any sight-reading tests. The focus is placed on musical performance, technical skill and knowledge of the works presented, however, this does not imply that aural and reading skills are insignificant or irrelevant to a sound musical training - merely that they are not required in these examinations.

It is impossible to give an exciting, or even a competent performance without a solid technical foundation; therefore, the technical work section has been carefully structured to ensure the constant development of various skills and a sound knowledge of all keys.

    17

  • As in Beginner, Junior and Preliminary, dynamic contrasts will be expected in all grades, even when they are not printed on the music.

Speeds of scales and arpeggios gradually increase, dynamics are added and, when the technique has strengthened, staccato and double octaves are required.

Pianists should have an awareness of basic chord progressions; these are included both for this reason and to provide a means of learning correct pedalling of chords. Pedalling is an area of technique which is often neglected: this is unfortunate as the co-ordination of hands and feet does not come naturally to some pianists and it therefore should be addressed early in their training.

The final section of each examination - Programme Notes - requires the student to be aware of certain aspects of their pieces.

From Grades 1 to 4 this is directly related to the content of the score and will consist of the familiar question and answer format.

For the remaining grades, candidates are to present information about one of their pieces, (candidate's choice) including an analysis of the work and stylistic characteristics in relation to the historical period in which it was written. The information is to be presented orally, with reference to written notes of which the examiner will be given a copy.

With this rather different approach to the General Knowledge section of examinations, it is hoped that students will research and then retain the relevant information, presenting it as it might be found in the programme notes at a concert.
