Fifth Sunday of Lent March 21, 2021
Gospel: John 12:20-33
Each of us is like a grain of wheat planted by God.
And just as a grain of wheat must die so as to produce a harvest,
so we too must die to self in order to bear the fruits of love.
This dying to self is a gradual process and happens in little ways.
Every act of humility involves dying to pride. Every act of courage involves dying to cowardice.
Every act of kindness involves dying to cruelty. Every act of love involves dying to selfishness.
Thus the false self dies and true self, made in God’s image, is born and nurtured.
It is by giving that we receive. It is by forgiving that we ourselves are forgiven.
And it is by dying that we are born to eternal life.
of us is like a grain of wheat planted by God.

The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum—from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery. The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.

Permanent Diaconate Program seeks interested men
Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama Permanent Diaconate Program seeks interested men. The
Permanent Diaconate has been present in the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama since 1973. With
the arrival of Bishop Steven Raica in 2020, and at his direction, the Office of the Permanent
Diaconate is looking to identify men who are interested in the Permanent Diaconate for the next
formation class. Although the date for the start of the new class has not been set by Bishop Raica,
the Office of the Permanent Diaconate will begin to develop a list of men who are interested in
obtaining more information about the formation process. It is hoped that once the current
restrictions have been relaxed, and after additional review by Bishop Raica, there will be
informational sessions and an opportunity for men, and their wives, to learn more about the
Permanent Diaconate and the formation process in the future. Men who are interested in the
Permanent Diaconate can contact Deacon Chris Rosko via email at [email protected].

Lamentations in Holy Week
The book of Lamentations used to occupy a central place in the prayers of Holy Week. Although it no longer predominates, its usage is optional.
Prior to the Second Vatican Council, the book of Lamentations was divided into three parts and sung in its entirety during the prayer called Matins, held in the late night or early hours before the dawn of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
Most chapters of Lamentations are alphabetical. The verses each begin with a succeeding letter of the Hebrew alphabet. During Holy Week, the cantor sang the name of the Hebrew letter (aleph, beth, ghimel, and so on) and then the corresponding verse. Each set of verses concluded when the cantor sang, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord your God.” Then the choir sang a responsory inspired by another part of Scripture. All this formed only one part of the prayer on those days. It was carried out primarily in monasteries and convents. The service was also called Tenebrae, Latin for “shadows.” During solemn celebrations, candles were extinguished one by one, and the church grew in darkness. The revised prayer service is much different today. It no longer calls for the extinguishing of candles. The book of Lamentations has been replaced with readings from the Letter to the Hebrews. The General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours says, “The Letter to the Hebrews interprets the Old Covenant in the light of the paschal mystery of Christ” (150). Excerpts from Lamentations are optional on other days of Holy Week. Parishes are encouraged to celebrate this prayer in common insofar as possible. In those cases, they follow the outline from the Office of Readings in the Liturgy of the Hours.
