FRIDAY 6TH MARCH 2020 A MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE HEADTEACHER

ST CATHERINE’S

CATHOLIC

SCHOOL

Dear Parent/ Carer,

As we approach the second week in our Lenten journey, we

are reminded to not be afraid. Did you know that this

phrase is mentioned at least 365 times in the bible:

sometimes to individuals and sometimes to groups of

people. Some people are in frightening situations, some have

just had big surprises; others are facing death, facing God or

even just facing amazing events. A fear of something that we

do not know or understand makes us very afraid. There has

been a significant fear over corona virus, and I hope this

week you have read the email that I sent. Schools are still

not at a point of having to close but we are planning just in

case that has to happen. There is no panic here and no

confirmed cases, so ‘ be not afraid’.

This has been a week of lovely journeys, all of Year 7 went

to Rochester this week as part of their History and

Geography curriculum. Students had a tour of the cathedral

and were able to admire the beautiful architecture. All

groups were lucky enough to have their picnic packed lunch-

es outside as the weather played it’s part. I must say it was

lovely to drive to school in the sunlight today!

The rain did not hold off for the Year 10 History students

who took a step back in time yesterday when they visited

Hampton Court Palace to learn about the private life of

Henry VIII, his wives and children, in the world of the Tudor

court. Students were able to admire Henry’s Great Hall, the

infamous Haunted Gallery and explore the

magnificent gardens, under an umbrella unfortunately.

On Thursday we also celebrated had World Book day

where staff and students shared what books they were

reading and took part in the quiz staged across the day by

our librarian. There are some smart cookies out there. I

was at Grays Convent and thought you might like to see my

book day outfit. I would like to say that I was reading Julie

Baird’s ‘Queen Victoria’, but I’m afraid it was the ‘Vile

Victorians’ that took my notice on the day. One would not

be amused!

Our thoughts have been with Year 11s as they have been

writing their PPE examinations. I am sure that they have

been afraid. However n Wednesday and Thursday the most

delightful smells came from the Food and Nutrition practical

examinations taking place. On closer investigation we were

able to see the masterful creations and menus our students

have come up with.

A reminder to Year 8 parents and carers that we are

holding Parents’ evening on the 17th March. We ask that

for 5.40pm to ensure you are able to see all staff they have

appointments with.

Women’s World Day of Prayer

6th March 2020

Today we celebrate Women’s World day of Prayer.

This is an opportunity for women around the world to

intercede for each other’s needs. This year the theme

relates to the story of paralysed man by the Pool of

Bethsida who is desperate to be healed and led by the

International Women’s Team in Zimbabwe. In this

scripture Jesus listens to the man’s story of his

paralysis for 38yrs, waiting in hope for someone to

help him. Jesus is so moved, that he heals him – “Rise

Take up your mat and walk.” The women of

war, famine and pain but live in hope that today or

tomorrow, with God’s help, they may rise and walk

with a little help from those around. We join together

today in prayer to be a support to those women who

need our help in Zimbabwe.

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous

Teach me to serve you as you deserve

To give and not to count the cost

To labour and not to seek reward

Knowing that I do your will.

The Bank of England has begun the massive task of destroying £40bn-worth of paper banknotes

which have been replaced by new polymer £20 notes. Two billion paper notes will be withdrawn and

recycled to be used as a soil improver. Two huge high-speed note-sorting machines each sort 33

notes per second. How long will it take for all the notes to be processed?

Note: For this question a billion is a thousand million.

Facebook, Youtube, Whatsapp, WeChat, and Instagram are the top

five social media platforms globally, with over one billion active

users each. In most countries the proportion of young people using

online social networks exceeds 90% and teens spend on

average more than 4 hours online every day.

We are repeatedly told in the news that social media is bad for us.

The pros and cons of social media totally depend on how we use it.

social media Has a lot of benefits for students and teachers, it has

become very easy to get knowledge from renowned experts and

professionals through the social media. You can easily follow

accounts to boost your knowledge. Regardless of your educational

background, you can learn various skills.

Social media can be used for various noble and charitable causes.

Not only this, but it also helps to change the way people live. It

creates awareness and helps people to discover various innovations

that help them enhance their own lives. Every individual from a

farmer to a teacher can benefit from the awareness factor of social

media.

Every week I will put together some inspirational and positive

Instagram pages. I will also put these pages on the display board

which is outside my office upstairs in the arts block.

The artist Asya Kozina transforms pieces of paper into eccentric wigs and wedding dresses. Originally from St.

Petersburg, Asya Kozina, creates them from standard Whatman paper bought from an ordinary stationary

shop. Work with white paper has become the artist’s signature mode of expression, and it is the only material

with which she can experiment tirelessly. Kozina believes that white paper allows her to accent form and

conceal secondary details. All of her works are created by hand, and none of the shapes or forms are repeated.

Kate Jenkins, The British crochet artist creates fibre-based foods that bear a striking resemblance to their

edible inspirations. Jenkins has a particular affinity for baked goods: her recent spreads include bagels and lox,

whole grain bread loaves, and individual fruit tarts. The artist creates every last detail down to tiny caper

berries, thinly sliced red onions, and kiwi and poppy seeds made from black beads. Jenkins learned to knit and

crochet as a child in Wales, and shares in an artist statement that she has always been fascinated and inspired

by everyday objects and experiences.

clients across different projects that include advertising, editorial, publishing, packaging, branding, patterns and

stationery. Recently her greetings cards designs have been stocked in Paperchase stores in the UK.

A p lea from the Geography depar tment

Do you have old wellies at home that

are no longer needed?

Have the kids outgrown some and they

are still in the cupboard?

Would you be willing to donate them to

the Geography department?

We are taking our Year 10s to the beach in April and the Year 9s to undertake river

studies in June and we would love to have some spare wellies for girls without.

Any donations would be warmly received. Please send them in with your daughter to be

brought to M1 or drop them at reception.

HOUSE NEWS

On the 26th and 27th of February there was a House Dodgeball Tournament which Miss Brown and Miss Wood

held for the Year 7’s and 8’s (Year 7 were on the 26th/ year 8 were on 27th).

All the girls that attended worked really hard within their house teams, there was a maximum of 12 players per

each house team, 6 coming from every form group. We even had some spare players come along to the event as

the girls were so enthusiastic about playing!

There was an extremely high turnout from both year groups which created a fantastic atmosphere in the sports hall

where they played their matches. The team morale was incredible between all the students involved, they were

driving each other to succeed and pushing each other’s confidence along the way.

Every house team had the opportunity to play each other in a round robin event which finished at roughly 4:15pm.

The results are as followed:

Year 7:

1st – Adele

2nd – Angela

3rd – Frances

4th – Cecilia

Year 8:

1st – Adele

2nd – Frances

3rd – Angela

4th – Cecilia

HOUSE

DODGEBALL

TOURNAMENT

The Year 7 Adele team were extremely competitive and used high

tactical skills which resulted in them winning all of their matches. So a

special well done to the year 7 Adele team!

The Year 8 Adele team were also incredible! Somehow Adele

managed to win with only 4 players! Well done to all Adele players.

Year 9 and 10 get yourselves ready for your own dodgeball house

tournament which will be in the next few weeks!

HOUSE NEWS

This week has been an important week in the House system! During House assemblies this week, the Heads of House

have introduced a new prayer for each House to learn and say during form time, reminded girls of the ways in which

they can receive house points, (for example, through achievement marks, good attendance and participation in house

events) and have also launched the ’40 Acts of Kindness’ activity in collaboration with the RE department.

The House points totals are going from strength to strength with huge gains for all Houses, which is extremely

encouraging. The girls are building their house points up through their excellent behaviour, attitude towards learning

and helpful acts within our school community.

The Heads of House were very excited to launch the House Charity vote this week and the totals have been coming

in! Each Head of House chose four charities for the girls to choose from and these were presented in House

Assemblies this week. There were four charities presented per House – local, national, global and Laudato sí, all of

which had strong Catholic or Christian links or were personally linked to students in the school. Please discuss with

your daughter which charity she voted for and why she would be a strong advocate for that charity.

The voting results will be out next week and the Head of House will be in full swing preparing for our Easter Fayre!!

YEAR 7 ROCHESTER TRIPS

On Monday 2nd March we had an amazing day out on our History/Geography Trip. Firstly we went to Rochester Castle and

Miss Scott taught us that the castle was originally made from wood but then changed to stone. She also talked about other

interesting facts about the area. We went to the cathedral and had a guided tour where we were shown a designs and paintings

on the walls and how the cathedral was built. We also saw a model of the moon which was on display in the Cathedral as part

of a travelling exhibition. We then visited the old sweet shop in Rochester where we could buy some treats. After lunch we

then had the geography section of our trip where we completed 4 pedestrian counts, labelling a map and asked the general

public questions about the town. Overall this trip was a really good experience.

On Friday 28th February a group of Year 8 & 9

students attended an author talk by Anthony

McGowan. The author spoke about his childhood

growing up in Leeds, urban legends and read extracts

from two of his novels for children. Anthony was

very funny and the event was enjoyed by students

and adults present.

MEDICATION

Please ensure that any medication your daughter needs to bring to school is labelled with their name and

form, includes instructions on how and when it is to be taken and is in date. All medication must be

handed in to the school office. Students may go to the school office when they need to take their

medication. This applies to all medication including over the counter medications such as paracetamol and

ibuprofen.

AEROSOLS, SPRAYS AND KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE

At the beginning of the new school year it is important to be reminded about some of our rules which

are designed to keep all of the students safe and well in school. We ask that students do not bring any

aerosols, other types of spray or perfumes into school. This is clearly stated in out planner and is to

ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students. The spraying of these items can lead to asthma attacks for

students in school and therefore poses a serious risk to their safety and wellbeing. Students can bring a

roll on deodorant to school to use after their PE lessons should they wish but aerosol sprays, other types

of spray and perfumes should not be brought to school and therefore not used anywhere on the school

site. The support of all parents/carers and students with regard to this matter is very much appreciated.
