My Dear People of St. Catherine, The horrible events of this past week have been most troubling and frightful; the senseless killing of George Floyd, the protests which happened and continue to take place, and the inexcusable rioting and looting of businesses which followed. I wrote about all of this last Sunday in my bulletin letter, and also preached about this in my homilies last Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, which are still online. Chicago Police Superintendent Brown said, “Mr. George Floyd, we grieve with you and your family. We are embarrassed by the cops in Minneapolis' use of force, asphyxiating you on the streets of Minneapolis. We stand with Mr. Floyd's family. But to the rioters and looters, you disgraced the name of Mr. Floyd by your actions. Hate can never drive out hate. Evil can never drive out evil. Two wrongs can never make a right. An eye for an eye leaves both of us blind. We will enforce these laws in this city. We will hold you accountable.” Talking with a parishioner from CFD this past week, we both said how the CPD responded to the civil unrest in a most professional way. I also spoke with a CPD parishioner who said how difficult it has been to hold your ground, while being not only verbally cursed but physically assaulted in a variety of ways. I thank all police, firefighters, and first responders in these most difficult times. I appreciate the leadership of our Cardinal, so please read his statement which follows. Yours in Christ,—Fr. Dennis Ziomek May 31, 2020 Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, on the murder of George Floyd and its aftermath. The past nights I have watched in great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. But was I surprised? No. As the saying goes, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring about the marginalized? I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our society. I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do not know what it means to be “other.” But I know there is a way to fix it. And the fix begins when we stop talking about the proportionality of “their” response and start talking about the proportionality of “ours.” Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields are leveled. The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of societal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is poison. We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child’s potential with more joy than the soaring of a rocket. I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city. We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today.

“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” This beautiful verse from our Gospel today testifies to how deeply God loves all creation. Unlike humans who have a myriad of filters to pass through to receive one’s love; God uninhibited by weakness, loves unconditionally. When I look at some people I see the ways they have hurt me on the periphery of every glance. God truly forgets confessed sins and sees the heart. As long as there is a grain of goodness in it; he seeks it out. He can be like a hound dog that catches a scent and all day pursues it through the forest. His persistence is such that all of our ancestors who broke covenants or wandered away; didn’t deter Him from sending his own Son to be sacrificed to prove his undying commitment. Somehow, someway, we have to encounter this love and receive it as directed at us. I’ve said over and over in my time here that this moment of being struck by the love of God is crucial to solidify our identity as beloved sons and daughters. A transformation takes place; we no longer have to turn to the things of this world for validation. We recognize in prayer that the love we have received cannot end with us but must be shared. Overcoming self-centeredness is done beautifully by prioritizing the good of others. What we will do to evangelize will be rooted in a desire to see others fall in love with Christ. During Pentecost we commemorated the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It is not static but a power that works in and through us. It looks like something active in our lives. Can I look in the mirror and say my conduct reflects the Love of God becoming a visible sign for others? The things unfolding in the world currently have crippled much of our efforts to live out the Christian life I’ve tried to describe. But this weekend small steps are being taken to gradually reopen our church. So that the sacraments and community that sustains our efforts to be intentional disciples can again nourish us. Whatever the time, or place, or current challenges; the formula for Christian discipleship does not change.—Fr. Nick
