St. Catherine Labouré (Zoe) was born 1806 in Fain-Les-Moutiers France, 9th of 11 children. She entered the Sisters of Charity in 1830 and took the name Catherine. In November 1830 Mary appeared to her and asked for a medal to be made (Miraculous Medal). Mary had rays coming from gems on her fingers. Those without rays symbolized graces we forget to ask for. For the next 46 years Catherine led a hidden life, and cared for old men. She died on 12/31, 1876. She was canonized in 1947. Her body is incorrupt to this day.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. The ashes are made from

the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebra-tion of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to in-cense. While the ashes symbolize penance and con-trition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repen-tant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost impor-tance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE

1) Abstinence on all the Fridays of Lent, and on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday. No meat may be eaten on days of abstinence. Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat. Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are ex-empt. 2) Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are permitted according to one's needs, but they should not together equal the one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Catholics from age 18 through age 59 are bound to fast. Again, invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.

3) Friday Abstinence Outside of Lent.

It should be noted that Fridays throughout the year are designated days of penance. The Code of Canon Law states that Friday is a day of abstinence from meat throughout the year. The American Bishops have al-lowed us to choose a different form of penance rather than abstaining from meat, but there must be some form of penance, for this is the day we commemorate Christ's suffering and death. The bishops stress that "among the works of voluntary self-denial and per-sonal penance...we give first place to abstinence from flesh meat" (Pastoral Statement on Fasting and Absti-nence).

Baby Blankets Needed

The Christ Child Society provides 4,000 layettes a year to low income newborns in the DC area. The layette includes a blanket, onesies, sleepers, diapers, and a book. Over 200 vol-unteers knit or crochet the handmade blankets to be included. A medal and prayer are put with the blanket. If you would like to help by knitting or crocheting a blanket please contact Mary Eileen Stevens, 301-942-2479. Materials and instruc-tions can be provided. If you would like to meet with our group, we will be meeting on 20 February.

La intención papal para Febrero

EEEE s el tiempo litúrgico de conversión, que marca la Iglesia para prepararnos a la gran fiesta de la Pascua. Es tiempo para arrepentirnos de nuestros pecados y de cambiar algo de nosotros para ser mejores y poder vivir más cerca de Cristo. La Cuaresma dura 40 días;

comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza y termina el Domingo de Ramos, día que se inicia la Semana Santa. A lo largo de este tiempo, sobre todo en la liturgia del domingo, ha-cemos un esfuerzo por recuperar el ritmo y estilo de ver-daderos creyentes que debemos vivir como hijos de Dios. El color litúrgico de este tiempo es el morado que sig-nifica luto y penitencia. Es un tiempo de reflexión, de penitencia, de conversión espiritual; tiempo de pre-paración al misterio pascual. La duración de la Cuaresma está basada en el símbolo del número cuarenta en la Biblia. En ésta, se habla de los cuarenta días del diluvio, de los cuarenta años de la marcha del pueblo judío por el desierto, de los cuarenta días de Moisés y de Elías en la montaña, de los cuarenta días que pasó Jesús en el desierto antes de comenzar su vida pública, de los 400 años que duró la estancia de los judíos en Egipto.

En la Biblia, el número cuatro simboliza el universo ma-terial, seguido de ceros significa el tiempo de nuestra vida en la tierra, seguido de pruebas y dificultades.

La práctica de la Cuaresma data desde el siglo IV, cuando se da la tendencia a constituirla en tiempo de penitencia y de renovación para toda la Iglesia, con la práctica del ayuno y de la abstinencia. Conservada con bastante vigor, al menos en un principio, en las iglesias de oriente, la práctica penitencial de la Cuaresma ha sido cada vez más aligerada en occidente, pero debe observarse un espíritu penitencial y de conversión.

Así como las plantas necesitan agua y sol para crecer, los matrimonios necesitan momentos de reencuentro para renovar y fortalecer su amor sin importar los años que tengan de casados. El Fin de Semana del Encuentro

Reflexión Cruzado el umbral del miércoles de Ceniza, nos encontramos ya en pleno período cuaresmal. El Evangelio de hoy es muy cortito, pero muy rico de significado. Vale la pena detenernos un momento en la primera frase: "El Espíritu empujó a Jesús al desierto, y se quedó en el desierto cuarenta días". ¡Esto es la Cuaresma: 40 días de desierto! La palabra "cuaresma" deriva del latín: "quadragesima", que quiere decir precisamente "cuarenta". El pueblo cristiano desde siempre ha vivido con especial intensidad este período, que precede a la cele-bración anual de los misterios de la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Este tiempo evoca antiguos acontecimientos bíblicos de gran simbolismo espiritual: 40 fueron los años de peregrinación del pueblo de Israel por el desierto hacia la tierra prometida; 40 los días de permanencia de Moisés en el monte Sinaí, en pleno desierto, en donde Dios renovó la alianza con su pueblo y le entregó las Tablas de la Ley; los días que recorrió Elías por el desierto hasta llegar a encontrarse con el Señor en el monte Horeb, también fueron 40; y 40 los días que nuestro Señor Jesucristo transcurrió en el desierto orando y ayunando, antes de iniciar su vida pública, que culminaría en el Calvario, en donde llevaría a término nuestra redención. La coincidencia numérica es interesante. Pero mucho más significa-tivo aún es el marco geográfico en el que tienen lugar todos estos acontecimientos: el desierto. En la literatura bíblica aparece muy a menudo el tema del desierto, no sólo como un lugar físico, sino también como un simbolismo de carácter espiritual. Parecería que Dios tuviera una predilección especial por este escenario para llevar a cabo sus obras de salvación. Vayamos juntos al desierto y veámoslo. Se trata de un lugar árido e inhóspito. No hay nada, ni lo más ele-mental. Allí se sufre todo tipo de incomodidades: la sed y el calor, las inclemencias del tiempo, los cambios bruscos de temperatura, las molestias de la arena, las privaciones y carencias materiales no ya de las cosas fútiles, sino también incluso de las más necesarias. El desierto es un paraje solitario y silencioso. Es lo opuesto al ruido y a la algarabía, al consumismo, a la molicie, a la vida fácil y pla-centera de nuestras ciudades modernas. Es para gente austera y tem-plada. Por eso, la realidad física del desierto puede ser como un símbolo de la vida espiritual: es el lugar del desprendimiento de todo lo su-perfluo; una invitación a la austeridad y al retorno a lo esencial. Es allí en donde el hombre experimenta su fragilidad y sus propias limitaciones; el lugar de la prueba y de la purificación. Pero tam-bién el escenario más apropiado para la búsqueda y el encuentro personal con Dios en la oración, en el silencio del alma y en la sole-dad de las creaturas.

"BUSQUEN PRIMERO EL REINO DE DIOS"

(MATEO 6:33 Muchos de nuestros feligreses han recibido corresponden-cia del Cardenal Wuerl a principios de enero pidiéndoles que consideren hacer un compromiso con la Campaña del Cardenal de 2018. Al igual que en años anteriores, el lema de la Campaña es: "Busquen primero el Reino de Dios". -Mateo 6:33. Mientras buscamos primero el Reino de Dios, tenemos la capacidad de contribuir a hacerlo presente en nuestras vidas y en la de aquellos que nos rodean a través de nuestras obras de caridad, amor y compasión. Las con-tribuciones a la Campaña del Cardenal nos ofrecen a cada uno de nosotros, la oportunidad de responder a las necesi-dades de otros ofreciendo ministerios y servicios que tocan miles de vidas.
