Old Testament
JUDITH IS CAPTURED
Judith 10: 18—16: 25
Judith told the soldiers of Holofernes
(enemy of the Jewish people in Bethu-
lia) that she had decided to go over to
their leader and help him defeat the
Jewish people. None of this was true.
She was actually planning to bring
about the victory herself in the power
of God. She was given a banquet by
Holofernes, but refused to eat any of
the “unclean” food. She had brought
her own kosher food with her. When
Holofernes became sleepy she lost no
time in cutting off his head! Then Ju-
dith and her maid simply walked away
from the camp and back to their own
town. She called to the watchmen,
“Open the gates! God is with us. Once
more he has made manifest his
strength in Israel.” There was a great
celebration in Bethulia that night. Eve-
ryone praised her, but she gave all the
credit to God. As you can imagine,
seeing the headless body of Holofer-
nes put an end to the enemy’s
planned attack.
New Testament
THE SERMON ON THE PLAIN
Luke 6: 17-49
Jesus preached the Sermon on the
Mount which is recorded in Matthew
chapters 5, 6, and 7. A similar ser-
mon is recorded by Luke. Jesus had
come down the mountain and
preached a sermon on the plain. In
this sermon he talked about how
people are blessed by God, especial-
ly those who are poor, who are hun-
gry, and who are sad. He let them
know in advance that as disciples
they would suffer during their life-
times. Jesus used the word “woe”
which is a strong word meaning a
kind of suffering that is deserved.
This word he used for those who
were rich because of not helping the
poor and the hungry. Jesus told us to
love our enemies, to do good without
expecting repayment, and not to
judge anyone. He taught us to give
unselfishly. This sermon contains the
famous parable about the man who
built his house on a rock.
MY FAITH
What is a prayer of
INTERCESSION?
Intercession is a
prayer where we ask
for help for someone
else. It’s OK to tell
the person you are
praying for them.
They are usually glad
to hear that you care
that much about
them. Does someone
need help? sick?
lonely? in a difficult
situation? Pray that
they receive the
strength and cour-
age that only God
can give.
BIBLE BOOKS
The Second Book of
Chronicles starts
with the reign of
King Solomon,
wealthy and wise. He
built the first temple.
In his old age he fol-
lowed pagan gods.
Generations of trou-
ble followed for
God’s people. This
book tells us about
the divided kingdom,
the exiles, and their
return to Jerusalem.

tion in Crisis by Carrie Gress this month. Due to Memo-

MAY HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH People with mental problems are our neighbors. They are members of our congregations, members of our
families; they are everywhere in this country. If we ignore their cries for help, we will be continuing to partici-
pate in the anguish from which those cries for help come. A problem of this magnitude will not go away.
Because it will not go away, and because of our spiritual commitments, we are compelled to take action.
(Rosalynn Carter)
Look for community events to highlight mental health issues affecting children, adolescents, adults and old-
er adults. This is an opportunity to educate your faith community about mental illness and help them be-
come caring congregations for persons with a mental illness and their families.

&
ONLINE GIVING
Every person’s finances
and family situation is
different. Jesus makes it
clear that it matters not
how much one gives, but
that it is planned,
calculated, at least
somewhat sacrificial (see
Luke 24:1-4), and not
simply from what is
“leftover” at the end of the
month. We propose the
tithe (10%) as the ideal
every family can consider
working towards. This
means taking steps to give
5% to one’s parish, and
5% to other charities or
causes you have personal
passion for. You can
register online at
www.saintbrendan.org
and click on the link
“Online Registration/New

corner of website and to
give online, click on the
“Online Giving” link. It’s

helps sustain our parish.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2019 A special thank you to Armando and Cristina Medina who provided a person-

made your gift to the Appeal, thank you! If not, please return your pledge en-
velope today or donate online. The web address is on the pledge envelopes
located in the pew. Thank you!
THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER In today’s Gospel, Jesus tell Peter again and again, “If you love Me, feed my
sheep.” He says the same to each of us, “If you love Me, use the gifts I have
given you to serve your brothers and sisters.

MALAWI NEWS This is the “out church” at Lugola, one of 6
churches within the St. Joseph Parish cen-
tered in the main village of Namalaka where
Pastor Fr. Davie Mambo resides. He was
able to provide Easter Sunday services at all
the churches with the help of two additional
priests. Lugola has a health clinic and a
school. It is a bustling “suburb” village.
Lungwena is large as well and has a primary
school with close to 3000 students where we have been able to support a
lunch program for the students so they may focus on their studies. The next
three weeks we are selling raffle tickets in the Narthex for a beautiful hand-
made quilt. The funds raised will assist with flood relief and food insecurity.
The quilt winner will be drawn and announced at the June 1st All Parish Festi-
val of Flavors for Pentecost. [email protected]
