St. Boniface Registered Nurses Alumni Association March 2017 Newsletter President’s Message Hello Fellow Alumni! Winter is coming to an end and we look forward to spring activities which include the Alumni Annual General Dinner Meeting and the opening of our long awaited Interactive Archival Exhibit! I recently heard an interview with an artist who expressed his view that he wanted his painting, a depiction of a Canadian historic political event, to not only portray the past event but to also be relevant now and in the future. Our Interactive Archival Exhibit is certainly an important example of how the past can shed light on the present and give guidance to the future. Not only is the Exhibit interesting, but it uses exciting technology to present the evolution of the SBGH School of Nursing which has historical and social relevance. Sustaining the St. Boniface Registered Nurses’ Alumni Association is, of course, also necessary for achieving its objectives, which include the preservation of our rich history, promoting a spirit of unity, promoting professional growth and maintaining connections with other alumni. The Alumni Executive appreciate the continued support, including financial support, we receive from its alumni. This is both energizing and, of course, essential for the survival of the Alumni. Our SBH Linked Web Page, email communication, our Bursary offering, and our participation in the SBH Nurses Week and special events are ways we use to connect Alumni members. Remembering and sharing past experiences can be, not only an enjoyable experience, but also a teacher, as well as giving an opportunity for reflection on unquestioned answers of the past. Come celebrate this connection at the Annual General Meeting Dinner! We will be celebrating the class of 1967. Please note, we recognize that many Registered Nurses have a strong connection to SBH and so we welcome all registered nurses to join the Alumni as Associate Members. President’s Message

Hello Fellow Alumni! Archive Report “Anything is possible if you believe”

The Interactive Exhibit: The above statement reflects how commitment, persistence and cooperation can make something become a reality! The vision of developing a project that

would preserve the 100 years of nursing history at St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing started in March 2010. This May, the vision will become a reality, thanks to so many individuals and corporations believing in the value of such a project. January 27, 2017 and February 10, 2017 presentations were given to the Alumni Executive and the Hospital by: Thomas Bres, Designer, Annie Langlois, Curator/Coordinator and Jean Vouillon, Programmer. We were able to: a) review and try out the installations of the themes on the interactive 55” TVs, b) see how the visuals on the wall would be like, c) see what the large upper panels (5 metres x 2ft.) would look like and d) visualize how the 10 acrylic 6ft. panels in front of the windows would be like.

Needless to say, this was a very exciting time to see how amazing the interactive exhibit will be!

We are hoping for completion of the project in time for Nurses’ Week and our AGM in May, 2017.

Plans have been initiated to plan for an opening ceremony in May. We will communicate to Alumni members more information as plans progress.

Virtual Reality Project On February 1, 2017 and February 10, 2017 Thomas Bres, Designer, Annie Langlois, Curator/Coordinator and Jean Vouillon, Programmer, presented 6 sites that would be appropriate to photograph for the virtual reality project. The

technology will allow individuals to “visit” virtually 6 different places within the walls of the School of Nursing in a 360-degree perspective!! Audio and photos will be added to the view which will make this experience even more realistic. The technology is in the form of special glasses and can also be accessed through an APP on your I Phone. We are hoping for completion of this project in time for our AGM!

Although these are exciting and busy times for the Alumni, there is always more work to be done to ensure that the history of our school will continue well into the future.

As an example, we need to digitalize all our yearbooks and all the class grad pictures……so more projects lie ahead!

Your continued support and donations are important to make all projects become a reality!

Thank you, Hélène, for supporting the Alumni!

St. Boniface Hospital’s Obstetrical Outreach Program

Did you know… St. Boniface Hospital’s Obstetrical Outreach Program travels to remote northern communities, providing prenatal care and fetal assessments to patients. Using a portable ultrasound, obstetricians and nurses can see up to 30 patients per day. Although most patients ultimately come to Winnipeg to deliver their babies, the goal is to keep expectant mothers in the community with their families for as long as possible. The Woman and Child Program provides the entire spectrum of

care for woman and their children, from conception and prenatal care, to delivery and postpartum care. The Program also provides care for a wide range of women’s health needs, including gynecological surgery, gynecological oncology, urogynecology, and colposcopy. The Woman and Child Program also provides a variety of outpatient services. Approximately 7,000 patients with complex needs and their families are cared for each year in the Ambulatory Care Facility (ACF) Pediatrics, and 9,000 obstetrical and gynecology patients are cared for in ACF Women’s Health. Over 6,800 expectant mothers are seen by nurse sonographers and physicians every year in the Hospital’s Fetal Assessment Unit.
