February 9, 2020 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” MATTHEW 5:16 The generosity of being a good steward of your gifts has a positive effect on people and it is conta-gious! Good works encourages more good works. Let your light shine! Be careful to recognize that God is working through you and don’t put yourself above the people you have been called to help.

"Deja que tu luz brille ante los demás, para que
puedan ver tus buenas obras y glorificar a tu Padre
que está en el cielo". MATEO 5:16
As Catholics, we are called to Christian Moral Living
and to preserve the Dignity of Life. These will be dis-
cussed at RCIA on Monday Feb. 10 from 7-8:30PM in
the Charity Meeting Room. All parishioners are invit-
ed. No sign-up is needed. WELCOME!
GOD’S CALL
The person who has been “saved,” who has
“heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an un-
saved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of
God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is pre-
sent in the world.
The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your
bread . . . shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the na-
ked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation
are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then
Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not
in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the
“weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians
2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the
gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let
God’s light shine through their good deeds.
We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent,
however, that we have heard the word of God and been
awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word
and bring that presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

food was so good, the choir of St. Mary Magdalene, as
always, sounded like the angels were singing to us.
What a treat to hear our very talented Ramirez family-
they were amazing!

Faith Formation News No class February 16 Faith Formation classes will not meet on February 16. Volunteers needed If you are VIRTUS-trained and can help during the First Communion Retreat on Saturday, February 22, from 9 am until noon, please contact the DRE. Including children from upper grades, we will have 25 kids in attendance, so a few extra catechists would be welcome. Child care provided for First Communion retreat Please inform the DRE as soon as possible how many sib-lings requiring child care will be attending the February 22 retreat. We need a head count so we can make arrange-ments for care-givers. Two half-day retreats on Saturday, February 22, 2020, and Saturday, April 25, 2020, have been scheduled for First Communion candidates. Both are mandatory for candi-dates and parents. First Communion will be celebrated at the 11:00 Mass on Sunday, May 3, 2020. 2020 Confirmation date set Confirmation will be celebrated at the 5 pm Mass on Sat-urday, December 5, 2020, the second weekend of Advent. Prayers are like family heirlooms Traditional Catholic prayers are like precious family heir-looms passed on from generation to generation. CCD class time is limited so we depend on parents to reinforce pray-ers at home. Please take time to review your child’s prayer check report and practice their required prayers with them. Complete sets of prayers required through sixth grade are available from the DRE if you need them. For more information about Faith Formation contact Ce-leste at [email protected] or 912.754.1432.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the Lord who made us.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contest-ants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor.
At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s to-tal gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ.
On Sundays, this self‑giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to partici-pation in the changes the Reign of God requires.
