It is very good to see many of our parishioners again at Mass. There are many questions about what our plan is now. Good questions. With the obligation to try to return to Mass now in place, we need to balance that with honest safety concerns. Saint Bernard will continue to social distance and wear masks at Mass. We will continue our disinfecting plan along with keeping a pew empty in between people. We also need you to continue to register for Mass so that we can control capacity comfortably. We need people to continue to assist us in cleaning and even ushering. If you wish to give your time in service to God and each other, this is a current need. Please contact Joe LeBeau in the main office if you
are interested in being trained to help us. Thank you very much. More and more people are not signing up for Mass and that makes our job of keeping everyone spaced more difficult. It is important. I know people young and old that have had the virus and have said that it's awful. I also know some who were not that bad off. I have also had the funeral of a man who suffered for months in the hospital with the virus and was not elderly. It’s a tragic reality that we are all walking through. It is important to pray for the strength to not become fatigued. I have to often check myself too. We have to be wise, faithful and prudent together. Your continued cooperation is very much appreciated. I mentioned the sacrament of confession in my homily last week. Because of the small size of the confessional, I am not using it at this time. Rather, I am hearing confessions in the daily Mass chapel which is not being used for daily Mass. Upon arrival, please wait in the main church and then come through the chapel doors via the church. You are welcome to sit opposite me about 8 feet away or so or kneel or sit behind me the same distance. It's pretty obvious when you arrive at church. The little confessional may have to be modified as we look to the future. New realities bring innovations in architecture. I hear confessions on Saturday at 2:30 PM and Tuesday nights at 5:30 PM with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Mass is at 6:30 PM on Tuesday nights. The Shrine in Champion, Wisconsin, just out past UWGB going north, has daily confessions and would make for a wonderful personal pilgrimage this time of year. You could go to confession and bring your prayers and petitions in a very purposeful and meaningful way to God through the hands of are Blessed Mother Mary. In a special way, please pray for all the people who call Saint Bernard home. We are blessed to be here. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
25TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIMES PAGE 3
Spirit & Life 25th Sunday of Ordinary Times
“So the last will be first and the first last.” - MATTHEW 20:16 You’ve heard the saying “It’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our sincere gratitude and cheerful generosity will help us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.
2020 GRACE Annual Appeal GRACE Annual Appeal Commitment Weekend is September 19th and 20th. The GRACE Annual Appeal is our annual giving campaign for GRACE Catholic schools and continues to be a primary funding source to advance our mission. Today, our mission has never been more important, and we are asking for gifts of prayers and donations to support the future growth of Catholic education in an ever changing world. Registered parishioners will receive the GRACE Annual Appeal mailing which will include a donation card and return envelope for your donation. Donations can also be made online at gracesystem.org/donate. Please joyfully consider a gift to the 2020 GRACE Annual Appeal. Thank you.
Communion to the Homebound We are concerned that there are members of our parish community that are unable to join us for Mass due to age, a lack of transportation or disability. We want you to receive the Eucharist and fellowship! Please contact us if you or someone that you know, would like a Eucharistic minister to bring communion to your home. We have many wonderful parish members who are anxiously awaiting to be called upon to bring Holy Communion to you in your home. Please contact Deacon Bernie Terrien or Tina Drewiske at the Parish Office.
Youth Ministry Outdoor Movie Night We're excited to announce that there will be a middle and high school youth ministry outdoor movie night showing "Breakthrough" on Thursday, September 24th from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Bring a blanket and lawn chair, and dress warmly! Contact [email protected] with any questions!
Upcoming Parish Trustee Elections
In the eyes of the state, the parish is comprised of five officers who make up the corporate board in matters legal. The Bishop and Pastor are the President and Vice President, while a Secretary position and Treasurer position are voted on by registered, confirmed members of the parish. These four officers are joined by the Vicar General of the diocese who is the fifth officer. Trustees help Fr. Mark practically by being able to perform legal and financial transactions when he is not available. They also provide an independent listening ear to staff and priest alike outside a parish or finance council. When the position is filled well, it is a great blessing to both the priest and parishioners.
If you would like to discuss your interest in possibly becoming a Parish Trustee, please contact Fr. Mark.
