We are entering a very long Lent. Sadly, the reality that many of us will be unable to gather with friends and family around our broader family tables looks to become a very real reality in the near future. The Table of the Lord also will become a remote experience for many of us in the

coming weeks. I pray you, like me, feel a longing to be quickly united again around the Altar. It will be a time of giving thanks, singing and hopefully our mourning will be spared great loss. Even one person lost is a profound sadness. Pray for a hunger and a deeper longing to receive Holy Communion.

We are encouraged in times like these to make a spiritual communion with Jesus in the Eucharist when we are unable to receive Him into our bodies through Holy Communion. This will become very important as we work to hold on to God and draw near to Him in these times, especially on the Sabbath, our Sunday worship, when we are unable to receive Holy Communion.

Here is the prayer of spiritual communion written by St. Alphonsus Ligouri that many saints have prayed over the years. This prayer can be offered up to God at any time during the day, whether we are at work, in a time of sadness or loneliness or find ourselves unable to receive Holy Communion at Mass due to having serious sin on our heart. The goal is to draw our heart closer to God by uniting with Him spiritually. Union with God is our ultimate goal and the aim of human life. Here is the prayer, it is a great one to commit to memory over time.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in

the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

As we move through the months ahead, I encourage you to watch for updates on our website, Facebook page and through parish emails. We have designated Meg Lehman as our Communication Coordinator and she will help to ensure that our information is communicated across a variety of mediums to you. We hope to provide encour-agement and spiritual consolation in this time of need. Please pray for each other and especially those who will experience social isolation and fear through this trying ordeal. It is a time for love, faith, patience, empathy and a deeper plunge into the presence of God with us. God who is love and who himself carries His Cross alongside us this Lent, holding our hand amidst the uncertainties and joys of this Life. Be assured of my prayers daily!

M A R C H 2 2 , 2 0 2 0 PA G E 3 4th Sunday of Lent “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appear-ance but the Lord looks into the heart.” 1SAMUEL 16:7 How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talent and treasure here on earth.
