September 27, 2020–Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Hello: Many of you know me as the Director of Music here at St. Bernard’s. I’m now excited to step into my new role as Director of Liturgy! I’ll still be doing most of the music, but will be working more closely with Kathie Stine and other heads of our various Liturgical Ministries.

You’ve probably heard that we’re starting to “open up” the parish a bit more, though we’re still in Phase I of our COVID restrictions. To that end, Fr. Mike has asked Kathie and I to get our Liturgical Ministries revamped and to offer additional training. THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE YOUR PARISH!

We are currently looking for people to help in the following areas: 1) Hospitality/Ushers - Greet and welcome people as they come to Mass, assist in seating where necessary, etc. 2) Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion (EM’s) - Distribute Communion to parishioners at Mass, and possibly to people who aren’t able to attend Mass in person. (Note: we’re not doing visits at this point, due to COVID.) 3) Altar Servers - Children and young people to assist the Priest at Mass. 4) Lectors - Proclaim the Scripture during the Liturgy of the Word at Mass.

We will be holding training sessions at the end of September and early October for each of these areas so that everyone is comfortable in their Ministry. One of the most important gifts you can give to your parish is your time and talent. I hope that you will consider joining one of these Ministries at St. Bernard’s! If you’re interested, contact me at [email protected] or call me at 480-661-9843 ext. 311. God bless Kent Campbell, Director of Liturgy/Music St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church Scottsdale, AZ (480) 661-9843 ext.311 [email protected]

R C I A The Rite of Christian Initiation Come Into Full Communion with the Catholic Church On October 4th, we will begin our classes for those over 18 years old who want to come into Full Communion with the Catholic Church.

We will meet from 8:30 AM until 10:45 AM on Sunday mornings in room 101 in the parish center. We will observe social distancing and all are required to wear masks while in the Parish Center.

The Coronavirus is causing stress and hardship in our lives. Many of us are isolated from family, friends and have to reduce our social lives.

During this difficult time, God reaches out to us to strengthen our relationship with Him. Our program for the initiation of adults into the Catholic faith community is one of the ways God invites those who are not baptized or who wish to worship Him as a Catholic to come closer to Him. If you, a family member or friend, feel God’s call to come closer to Him

through worship in the Catholic Church, you are invited to join us this fall for RCIA.

For more information about RCIA classes and how to come into full communion with our Catholic faith community, contact Deacon Alan at 602-228-7234.

Peter’s Pence Collection

October 3rd & 4th, 2020

Next week, we will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection which provides Pope Francis with the funds to carryout his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our

brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous.

For more information, visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.

This week the Sanctuary Light Will be lit in Memory of

Howdy, With the Covid-virus many things have changed in church. One, is that we are not taking up a collection during Mass, but asking you to give either as you enter church or as you leave. Of course, this makes it difficult for important second collections. Two collections have been asked in a special way this month. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection was postponed and now Bishop Olmsted is asking us to try to find a way to help our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Also, Archbishop Gomez, the archbishop of Los Angeles and the president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked us for a collection to aid those recent national disasters: Hurricane Sally and the fires in the West.

If you would like to donate to these needs, you can put your donation in an envelope and mark it which collection you are helping. The envelopes can be placed in the regular collection baskets as you enter or leave the church and we will separate those from your parish collection.

As always, thank you for your generosity.

In Christ, Fr. Mike

LIFE TEEN WILL MEET IN THE NEW PARISH CENTER IN THE TEEN ROOM ON THE SECOND FLOOR.

That Man Is You! has begun again at St. Bernard's. This year, the program theme is "ALL THINGS NEW." Christ

didn't say, "I make new things." He said, "I make all things new." Encounter God the Father. Enlighten your mind with spiritual truths that will help transform the world. Become a new creation in Christ and allo mercy to consume your miser-ies - SEIZE THE DAY! Here is the schedule for in-person sessions (beginning 10/2) 6:45am - Doors open 7:00am - Video presentation 7:30am - Small group discussion 8:00am - Adjourn If you have any questions about this year, or need help in ac-cessing this Friday's on-line session, contact Kent Campbell at [email protected], or at (480) 661-9843, x311.

We are excited to begin again and hope to see many men online, and especially in person on October 2!!

Elementary Faith Formation News

Safe Environment News

The Safe Environment year runs from July 1st until June 30th. It is time to renew for all those in compliance last year.

The website is loaded and running. If you did not complete your training last year you have been archived, so please re-register and try again. All training, including Foundation, will be online this year. You must complete all steps in the process, including the background check, for those needing foundation, in order to be complete.

There will be no “live” classes offered this entire year, so please do not try to sign in to anything “live”! You want either “ONLINE” Foundation or Renewal. It is important you use the correct “User Name” so that you history follows you. Please do not create a new account!

Please call me at the Office, ex #314, if you are in need of any help! https://phoenix.cmgconnect.org

Kathie- Safe Environment Coordinator

Guardian Angel Prayer: Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God’s love commits me here, Ever this day, be at my side, To light and guard, To rule and guide. Amen.

Elementary Faith Formation classes are going well! We love having the children back in the classrooms and so many parents back in the building. Thank you for helping us to keep the children safe and for teaching them all the necessary things we must do to remain safe and healthy.

You can still register for classes or home school through the Parish Office. I will open more classes as needed, so please let me know your scheduling needs, especially for sacraments. I think you will be pleased with the safety precautions we are taking as we continue to share faith with your children. I also have a Home School option, for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, for those who are more comfortable with that for the first semester, but you still need to come register to receive the materials and information on parent meetings and to register for sacraments. We are not normally a home school parish, especially for sacraments, so our hope is that everyone will be able to come back comfortably by the second semester in January.

If your child is scheduled to receive sacraments in the spring of 2021 they need to be enrolled in live classes or homeschooling this first semester.

You may email me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office Monday through Thursday. I do have a new extension 314. I can pick up emails when I am out of the Office, so you will get a response a lot quicker than leaving a voice mail.

We look forward to seeing many of you and your children this week! “Be Healthy, Be Smart and Be Holy” and please remember to pray daily with your children!

God’s blessings,

Kathie

Spiritual Direction at St. Bernard’s:

“As she has always done, today the church continues to recommend the practice the spiritual direction not only to those who desire to follow the Lord

A St. Bernard’s parishioner is working to complete her certification in Spiritual Direction through Divine Mercy University, a program that is faithful to the Magisterium, Christ centered, and in line with the Church’s tried tradition of spiritual direction.
