Welcome, New Parishioners and Sunday Visitors:

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Parish is a canonically open parish of the

Archdiocese of Boston, which has a Traditional Latin Mass

apostolate. Both the ordinary form of the Roman Rite (1970 Missal) and the

extraordinary form (1962 Missal) are cel-ebrated here with the blessing of His Emi-nence Sean Cardinal O’Malley, Archbish-op of Boston. We encourage new parish-ioners to please register in the parish and to introduce yourselves to the Pastor. We are always glad to welcome Sunday visi-

tors here to our beautiful, historic church. We look forward to your

coming again.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO FILL OUT A PARISH REGISTRATION FORM.

Parish Mission Statement

“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.

Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his bish-op, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the

first community of Christian life; it is a community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know

their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its

confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life.”

(Pope Saint Paul VI, reigned 1964-1978) Raised to the Altars October 14th, 2018

CARDINAL SARAH ON PROTECTING THE SACREDNESS OF

WORSHIP

In last week’s edition of the Boston Pilot there was a

Catholic News Service story on Robert Cardinal Sarah’s letter to the presidents of national bishops, conferences around the world. The Cardinal’s letter, written in his capacity as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and approved by Pope Francis for publication, urged bishops around the world to facilitate the return of people to Church for Mass as soon as conditions permit.

He cautioned against two things in particular: a normalization of virtual Mass through media and a degradation of the experience of divine worship in the name of public hygiene.

He wrote:

Participating only virtually risks distancing us from a personal and intimate encounter with the incarnate God whose presence among His people was not virtual but real...This physical contact with the Lord is vital, indispensable, irreplaceable.

This means that as soon as measures for reducing the spread of the virus have been adopted, the faithful need to resume their place in the assembly and those who have been discouraged, frightened, absent or uninvolved for too long need to be invited and encouraged to return.

However, needed attention to hygiene and safety regulations cannot lead to the sterilization of gestures and rites, to the instilling, even unconsciously of fear and insecurity to the faithful. It is up to the prudent but firm action of the bishops to ensure that the participation of the faithful in the celebration of the Eucharist is not reduced by public

Pastor’s Note

authorities to a ‘gathering’ and is not considered comparable or even subordinate to forms of recreational activities.

Facilitating the participation of the faithful in liturgical celebrations should be done without improvised ritual experimentation and in full respect of the norms contained in the liturgical books which govern their conduct.

The faithful have a right to receive the Eucharist and worship the Lord present in the Eucharist in the manner provided for, without limitations that go beyond what is provided for by the norms of hygiene issued by public authorities or bishops.

And when the situation returns to normal, any COVID-control adaptations to being in church and at Mass should expire.

CATECHESIS: ON-GOING INSTRUCTION IN THE

FULLNESS OF CHRISTIAN FAITH

2020 Jubilee 2021 YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST

MYSTERIUM FIDEI (“MYSTERY OF FAITH”,

ENYCLICAL LETTER OF POPE PAUL VI)

In the Sacrifice of the Mass Christ Is Made Sacramentally Present

(continued)

The same we read in St. Cyprian, writing in defense of the Church against schism: “Finally, the sacrifices of the Lord proclaim the unity of Christians, bound together by the bond of a firm and inviolable charity. For when the Lord, in speaking of bread which is produced by the compacting of many grains of wheat, refers to it as His Body, He is describing our people whose unity He has sustained, and when He refers to wine pressed from many grapes and berries, as His Blood, He is speaking of our flock, formed by the fusing of many united together.”

But before all of these, St. Paul had written to the Corinthians: the one bread make us one body, though we are many in number the same bread is shared by all.

While the eucharistic symbolism brings us to an understanding of the effect proper to this Sacrament, which is the unity of the Mystical Body, it does not indicate or explain what it is that makes this Sacrament different from all others. The constant teaching which the Catholic Church passes on to her catechumens, the understanding of the Christian people, the doctrine defined by the Council of Trent, the very words used by Christ when He instituted

the Most Holy Eucharist, compel us to acknowledge that “the Eucharist is that flesh of Our Savior Jesus Christ who suffered for our sins and whom the Father in His loving-kindness raised again.” To these words of St. Ignatius of Antioch, we may add those which Theodore of Mopsueta, a faithful witness to the faith of the Church on this point, addressed the to the faithful: “The Lord did not say: This is a symbol of My Body, and this is a symbol of My Blood but: This is My Body and My Blood. He teaches us not to look to the nature of those things which lie before us and are perceived by our senses, for by the prayer of thanksgiving and the words spoken over them, they have changed into Flesh and Blood.”

The Council of Trent, basing itself on this faith of the Church, “openly and sincerely professes that within the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, after the Consecration of the bread and wine, Our Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, is really, truly and substantially contained under those outward appearances.” In this way, the Savior in His Humanity is present not only at the right hand of the Father according to the natural manner of existence, but also in the Sacrament of the Eucharist...

“the very idea of Christianity in its

profession and history…is a definite message from

god to man distinctly conveyed by his chosen instruments, and to be

received as such a message; and therefore

to be positively acknowledged.

Embraced, and maintained as true, on the ground of its being divine, not as

true on intrinsic grounds, not as probably true, but as absolutely

certain knowledge, certain in a sense in which nothing else can be certain, because its comes from him who can

neither deceive nor be deceived.” —SAINT john henry cardinal newman

LATIN MASS PROPERS: OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY

INTROIT: Let us all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating a festival-day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for whose solemn festival the Angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God. Psalm 44;2 My heart hath uttered a good word: I speak my works to the King V. Glory be to the Father...

COLLECT: O God, whose only-begotten Son by His Life and death and resurrection has won for us the rewards of eternal salvation, grant, we pray, that we who meditate on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through our Lord.

EPISTLE: Proverbs 8: 22-24, 32-35 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of His ways, before He made anything, from the beginning. I was set up from eternity, and of old, before the earth was made. The depths were not as yet, and I was already conceived. Now therefore, ye children, hear me: blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, and that watcheth daily at my gates; and waiteth at the posts of my doors. He that shall find me, shall find life, and shall have salvation from the Lord.

GRADUAL: Psalm 44:5, 11, 12 Because of truth, and meekness, and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. V. Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thine ear, for the King hath greatly desired thy beauty. ALLELUIA: Alleluia, alleluia. V. The solemn festival of the glorious Virgin Mary of the seed of Abraham, sprung from the tribe of Judah, of David’s royal race. Alleluia.

GOSPEL: Luke 1:26-38 At that time, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the House of David: and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Who, having heard, was troubled at his saying and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God. Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a Son: and thou shalt call His name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of David His Father: and He shall reign in the House of Jacob forever, and of His Kingdom there shall be no end. And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done since I know not man? And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren; because no word shall be impossible with God. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word.

OFFERTORY: Ecclus. 24: 25; 39:17 In me is all grace of the way and of the truth; in me is all hope of life and of virtue. Like a rose planted on the rivers I have budded forth.

SECRET Make us worthy, O Lord, we beseech Thee, to offer Thee this sacrifice; and by means of the myster-ies of the most holy Rosary may we so keep in mind the life, passion and glory of Thine only-begotten Son, that we may be made worthy of His promises. Who with Thee liveth.

Preface of the Blessed Virgin Mary

COMMUNION: Ecclus. 39:19 Send forth flowers as the lily, and yield a smell, and bring forth leaves in grace, and praise with canticles, and bless the Lord in His works.

POSTCOMMUNION May we be helped, O Lord, we beseech Thee, by the prayers of Thy most holy Mother, whose Rosary we are celebrating, that we may draw strength from the mysteries which we reverence and ob-tain the effect of the sacrament which we have received. Who livest and reignest.
