God Among Us—The claim that Christianity makes for Christmas is that at a particular time and place God came to be with us himself. When Quirinius was governor of Syria, in a town called Bethlehem, a child was born, who beyond the power of anyone to account for, was the high and lofty One made low and helpless. The One who inhabits eternity comes to dwell in time. The One whom none can look upon and live is delivered in a stable under the soft, indifferent gaze of cattle. The Father of all mercies puts himself at our mercy. Faith is unseen but felt, faith is strength when we feel we have none, faith is hope when all seems lost.

REFLECTIONS “You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” Patience is another one of those things many of us struggle with. We want things to go according to our plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and fear. Through daily prayer we better align ourselves with God’s will and His plan, which is far better than anything we can come up with on our own.

PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS Pray for Dominic T. Couturier, University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, IL—Lord Jesus Christ, our King, may the witness of the saints prompt us to heed your call to holiness. Support and direct the efforts of those you invite to serve as priests, deacons, brothers, sisters, consecrated seculars, and lay ministers. May your kingdom come. Amen.

In the northern hemisphere the winter solstice is celebrated by many people because of the happy coincidence of the celebration of the birth of Jesus with the significant change of the seasons marked by the winter solstice—Just as the light of the sun begins once more to grow stronger at the winter solstice, so in our Advent prayers we greet the new light of Christ at his birth and ask for that light to increase in our lives.

Remember, in the midst of this season that we need to include Jesus in our holiday preparations. Although Christmas comes “but once a year,” Christ’s love is with us always and He’s counting on us to share it with others! Father will be on vacation from Dec. 26 thru February 3—there will be no Saturday night Mass in Edmore during this time.

Prayers of the Faithful— That through daily prayer we gain patience and align ourselves with God and His plan for us.

As the year ends, help us leave our sins behind and begin life anew with pure hearts and steadfast faith.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

The question put to Jesus in today’s gospel is also

put to us today: “Are you the one?” Are you the

one who will give guidance to the children in

your life or must they look to TV sitcoms, films,

videos and music lyrics for direction? Are you the

one? Will you be the one?
