PARISH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

SEEKING ANGELS…

It is time to start thinking flowers! So, all you gardeners and gardening helpers, we are calling you to come to our St. Benedict’s Gardening Angels informational meeting. The only qualification you need is a desire to help us keep our parish campus blossoming with God’s beauty all season long. Remember, no experience necessary, you just need a desire to help.

There will be a short informational meeting after each Mass in the church social hall on Sat., April 28th and Sun., April 29th.

If you can’t make any of the meetings, but, are interested in joining our group, email me at [email protected] or call the Parish Center and leave your name and phone number and they will forward your information to me.

JIM’S GEMS… I share the following item with you because of my

own recent experience with selling a home in Florida; emptying it of “stuff” and carting the “keepables” up here to Waterford. It surprised me this weekend to realize that this is the first time in 40 years that I’ve not owned my own home. My home, heart and hearth is now here at St. Benedict.

As I have said to some, there is no need at my age to own a residence. Really, no dwelling here is permanent. Only God himself is our everlasting home. It is such a spirit that I pass some “death cleaning” ideas onto you…

De-cluttering, Swedish Style

The latest export from Sweden isn’t a sturdy station wagon or a funky furniture store, but, rather it’s a way of life. More specifically, it’s a way of end-of-life. It’s called döstädning, which translates to “death cleaning.”

In the tough-minded ways of this Scandinavian culture, it’s a decluttering practice that’s more about relieving a burden on family than creating pleasant surroundings. Americans have taken note of the ritual, which can begin as early as one’s 50s.

Margareta Magnusson, the 80-plus author of the new book, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, explains the phenomenon. Q: What problems does keeping too much stuff cause your loved ones after you’re gone? A: It’s very time-consuming. Why should my family take so much time, having jobs, families and everything else they have scheduled — to take care of my things? Q: How do you decide what to keep or discard? A: Talk about it with your family. It’s a delight to go through things and remember their worth. But, if you don’t remember why a thing has meaning, then, it has no worth, and it will be easier for you to part with. Q: You write that you should get rid of “private” items such as diaries. Why? A: If you think a secret will cause your loved ones harm or unhappiness, then, make sure to destroy such items. Make a bonfire or shove them into a hungry shredder. Q: How does cleaning help the cleaner? A: The more I have focused on my cleaning, the braver I have become in discarding possessions. I have had a moment to reflect on the event or feeling, good or bad, and to know that it had been a part of my story and my life.

JIM’S JOKES… Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a

question if they aren't prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting

attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.”

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?” She again replied, “Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.”

The defense attorney nearly died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, “If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to the electric chair.”

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER… Many of us name Psalm 23 (The Lord is my

Shepherd) as our favorite. It is sung at funerals, including at Blessed Mother Teresa's. It adorns many a home in framed needlepoint and refrigerator magnets. Many of the words remain in our memory, available for instant recitation when the time is right. Of course, truth be told, it may be the only real psalm we know, or at least the only one whose number we know.

There is a reason for the popularity of this psalm. The image it conveys to us is one of helpless little lambs that are so very loved by a Good Shepherd. We see ourselves as lambs being led by someone who cares so much for us. When we are hurt, he holds us. When we are lost, he finds us. Some have said that, because most of us have never seen a real shepherd at work, the image does not have the same power. But the popularity of the image tells a different story. Add to the images mentioned above the reality that this Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, and the image is pretty easy to understand. We hear his voice, and we follow; we follow him into eternal life.
