THE BLESSING OF THE BAMBINELLI
For several decades there has been a tradition in St. Peter’s Square on Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent. Many people will bring, from their homes, the baby Jesus figure from their Nativity sets at home to be blessed by the Pope during the praying of the noontime Angelus. St. Bartholomew’s Parish
will celebrate the Blessing of the Bambinelli the week-end of December 12th & 13th at all the Masses. You are invited to bring the Baby Jesus figure from your home to be blessed at whichever Mass you come to that weekend. It is suggested that, after you return home, you place the figure in a gift box, wrap it and let it be the first gift that your family opens on Christmas Day. In this way we remember, in a very special way, the greatest gift of Christmas.
CHRISTMAS MASSES – SLIGHT MODIFICATION
Due to a logistical issue, a slight modification has been made in our Christmas Eve Schedule will be as follows:
Once again, I anticipate not being able to accommodate as many people as would like to be at Mass, so we will again be requiring all people wishing to be at Mass to pre-register. Please let anyone you know who will be wanting to be at Mass for Christmas know about this requirement.
Again remember, that attendance at Mass on Christmas is not an obligation this year. To assist everyone in their desire to be a part of Christmas Mass, we will plan to live stream the 4:00 Mass on Christmas Eve on our Facebook page, and it will continue to be available for replay. I would also encourage you to remember that we cele-brate Christmas as both an Octave (8 days in which we celebrate as if it were Christmas Day with various feasts) as well as a season which culminates this year on January 10th with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. You might choose to come to Mass on a day during the Christmas season. Online signup for Christmas Mass will be availa-ble at some point in December, but I wanted to offer this information now so that you can be thinking about it.
BEST ADVENT EVER
The Dynamic Catholic Institute is offering an online series of inspirational videos, practical tips and real-life stories to help you to enter into the season of Advent. Beginning on Sunday, November 29th, participants receive daily emails with these tips and videos to discover how to slow down and find joy in preparing for Christmas. To partici-pate, visit bestadventever.com
SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
December 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and, under normal circumstances, would be a holy day of obligation. Given that we are in the midst of a pandemic and a state of emergency, the obligation to attend Mass does not apply. Mindful that there may be some who want still to attend Mass that day, we will have a 6:30 PM
Mass on the 8th in addition to our 9:00 AM Mass. Please be sure to sign up online.
A NOTE FROM FR. DEREK
This Tuesday is the Solemnity of the Immacu-late Conception, the patronal feast day of the United States of America. It is to Mary’s care, under this title, that the United States was entrusted by the U.S. Bishops in 1846 and confirmed by Pope Pius IX the next year,
several years before the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was infallibly proclaimed in 1854. Today more than ever, we should have recourse to Our Lady in our days of strife and discord. Back in March, while Europe was being ravaged by the novel coronavirus and it was just picking up speed here, Pope Francis offered the following prayer seeking Our Lady’s intercession:
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross, you participat-ed in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your pro-tection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
Your help in the purchase of flowers to make our sanctuary look even more beautiful as we celebrate the Lord Jesus’ birth are greatly appreciated. Donations may be made online at our website or by putting a donation in an envelope, marking it for “Christmas Flowers” with the names of those to be remembered, and placed in the offertory basket. Memorials will be printed in the Christmas bulletin.
END OF YEAR DONATIONS
Just a reminder to all of you that the close of the calendar year is just a few weeks away. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of this time of year and looking ahead to tax time in April, you might consider an additional tax-deductible donation to St. Bartholomew’s Parish before the end of the year.
CAROLING & VISITS WITH SANTA
Although we cannot have our Pancakes with Santa in person this year, we are excited to be able to gather on Zoom to sing carols and see Santa! The main room of the Zoom event will include caroling led by the Nedder Family, with Santa in a breakout room for visits by family (if you just want to join us for caroling, that's fine too!). December 13 from 2-3pm (Link will be emailed to those who sign up). Sign up Here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b094faba728a4f85-caroling

If you did not get a mailing from the parish regarding this appeal, gifts can be made at the parish website. Choose “Donate” and then donate through Stripe and earmark the gift with “Grand Annual.”
ADVENT RESOURCE BOOKLET
Please see our parish Advent Resource Booklet for ways to celebrate this Advent. It is full of opportunities for prayer & reflection and has some great video links & music playlists (Spotify & YouTube) for children and adults, as well as family crafts & recipes to help us to prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas!

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION
The only collection that is taken up at all of the Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is for the support of the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust. The goal of this fund is to ensure the health and well-being of our priests. The Trust offers preventative health and wellness programs, health-care support and operates Regina Cleri, a facility for senior priests to live in community. To learn more about this trust, visit www.clergytrust.org. This special collection is the primary source of funding to care for the health needs of our priests. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. If you are making your Christmas offering online, please be sure to earmark it for: “Christmas Collection: Clergy Health and Retirement Trust.” Thank you.

GRATITUDE FROM MEYER CHAMBERS
When we look back over the events of the past week, to say "thank you" hardly seems adequate for the gratitude that has been expressed by so many. Nonetheless, I will say it. Thank you. To be honest, as an organizing participant, I take each one of your donations personally. Growing up in New Orleans in the 1960s, there were no food pantries. There were only neighbors and relatives. Being neighbors put us in relationship with one another. As the food you donated was put on the van, there was no separating by class or donation status. There was only a common goal--to care for the dear neighbor--as the Sisters of St. Joseph teach us. Thank you for your care. Thank you for your concern. Thank you for filling the van. Thank you for the Amazon Pantry donations. Thank you for the cash and thank you for the prayers.
Going forward, winter is right around the corner. Though a vaccine is on the horizon, the economic downturn looms large. Toys and gifts are a welcome delight, but warmth and shelter are more of a basic need. I worry about our world, but we have a unique opportunity to care for those whom we live amongst. Your unrelenting generosity will be called upon again as we try to help those who need it most. Perhaps, Pope Francis sums it up best in Fratelli Tutti when he writes:
“There is always the factor of ‘gratuitousness’: the ability to do some things simply because they are good in them-selves, without concern for personal gain or recompense. Gratuitousness makes it possible for us to welcome the stranger, even though this brings us no immediate tangible benefit.”
Hats, gloves, gift cards, monetary donations, Amazon.com shopping for food and gifts will be utilized once again. May the blessings of Advent be yours as we prepare for the return of the King!

PROJECT NAZARETH (K-6TH GRADES- OPTIONAL)
The Archdiocese of Boston has created a new program, focused on the Gospel, to aid parents in their role as first teachers of the faith! Studies show that parents who are engaged in practicing their faith and sharing it with their children are the most important factor influencing the child's faith as an adult.
For this month's weekly activities, focused on the Sunday Gospel, please see the weekly parish email or Religious Ed. Newsletter.
For additional resources for prayer or for engaging in conversa-tion about the faith, see the Prayer Guide and Parent Guide also available in the weekly emails. As always, Jen, Maryellen and Fr. Derek are happy to help you to find engaging ways to share your faith with your children.
We are excited to be able to offer you these resources for free, but ask that you do not share them outside of the Archdiocese of Boston.
LOVE THY NEIGHBOR
The Love-thy-neighbor program is informed by the state every time a family in Boston is diagnosed COVID-19 positive and is also in a financial position where they will not be able to purchase 14 days of groceries for quaran-tining.
They have folks sign up to both purchase and deliver groceries within 48 hours of being contacted. They are looking for helpers for their program during this new spike of COVID-19. More information can be found here: https://www.parkstreet.org/cityengagement/love-thy-neighbor/
