The Vicar’s Letter
Dear Friends,
November, traditionally, is known as the month of the Holy Souls and that is especially so this year. The month begins with All Saints Day on 1st, then All Souls Day on the 2nd, in some calendars 8th November is the Saints of England and then there is, of course Remembrance Day this year falls on the 10th. Just before the month began we celebrated the life of one of our own saints of God as we said “Farewell” to Keith Duce. I’m not sure there will ever be a dedicated Saint Keith Duce’s Day, but he has certainly been a faithful soldier and servant in God’s service at St. Bartholomew’s and across the whole city. At the very heart of our faith is the command to remember whenever we take bread and wine, but it is also right to remember those who have been special to us. So, in November we remember the saints whose names are familiar to us and those whose names we will never know. Even though we might not know a name does not mean that they are not precious to God. We remember those who have died naturally, those who have died because of their faith and those who have died as a result of war. It sounds as though November should be heavy and depressing, but it need not be because it is natural to remember, and it is natural to give thanks for all whose lives have enabled us to be the people we are today. It must be strange for people who live without faith, where life is like a supermarket special offer, “When it’s gone, it’s gone”; I think there is much sense in the idea that this life is a time of preparation in readiness for the heavenly banquet. (That is probably something to do with my love of food though.)
On another matter altogether, I will be away for a couple of Sundays in November, you will be looked after by Fr Ian White, who until recently was vicar of Addle. Treat him well – and don’t use it as an excuse not to come just because I’m not here because Father gets to know everything. November usually means that it is the time for my summer holiday when I get myself ready for all that will be happening a few weeks after I get back, but I won’t mention the C word at this stage. So November is a time for partings but to say Hello usually means that there has been a Goodbye first and as I often remind people during funeral addresses ‘Goodbye’ means ‘God be with you’ and as we remember during the month of November it is certainly a time for saying that. With my love and prayers,
Fr. Michael

“Rest eternal grant unto them, and let light perpetual shine upon them”
Keith Duce, 1938-2019
Keith rarely missed Mass, on
Sundays and weekdays. He served at
the Altar throughout his 46 years at
Armley.
Keith first came to St. Bartholomew’s
in the spring of 1972. The Vicar of
the day was the formidable but well-
loved Fr. Norrie McCurry, the first
priest to be addressed as Father rather
than Mister at our church.
Keith was taken to the Methodist
church as a youngster, but, as most of
you will know, he became a staunch
Anglo-Catholic. By the 1970s, the worship at the Venerable Bede,
Bramley, became too “low”, and the two churchwardens, Harry and
Keith, decided to join our congregation. I can remember them sitting
among us at the church’s Annual Meeting in the Parish Hall, Fr.
McCurry excitedly introducing them to us. The Vicar left us that same
year, and was followed by Fr. Owen Conway, who found us in
considerable debt, following the building of the Hall in 1968.
So, two people volunteered to run a Social Club, yes, Harry and Keith.
I need more time to write a history of the Social Club, and others must
tell of Keith’s record as Head Server. He was a member of the PCC for
the rest of his life, and, until recently, a member of the Representative
on the Diocesan Synod.
A devout and knowledgeable Christian, known throughout the Diocese,
devoted to St. Bartholomew’s, and a lovely human being, he will be
sadly missed.
My abiding memory of him will always centre in the early days of the
Social Club – he was Chairman, I was Secretary, a number of us would
meet on Friday evenings, after choir practice, Bob, Chris, Arnold
(organist of the day), joined by Mike and Keith, all putting the world to
rights.
May Keith rest in peace, and light perpetual shine upon him. T.C.
Keith Duce, RIP

Where there’s a will ……… Everyone knows it’s a good idea to make a will. But for
many of us, it’s one of those things we never quite get
around to doing, and there’s always a reason for putting
it off.
Here are some reasons why you really should make a will, sooner rather than
later.
You choose what happens If you do not make a will, the law will decide who receives all your assets in accordance with pre-ordained rules. These unfortunately may not coincide with your own wishes.
You can take care of the children If you have any children under the age of 18, you should appoint guardians to look after them in the event of both parents’ death. If you don’t name guardians for your children in your will, the courts will decide who will be given custody.
Your property is protected If you and your partner are not married, he or she will not benefit from your estate unless you have specifically written it into a will.
Making a will It really isn’t difficult or complicated to make a will – or update an existing one.
2. Use the ‘Preparing to visit your solicitor’ form to
help plan the meeting. Visit
www.churchlegacy.org.uk/preparing
1. Find a Solicitor- ask you family/friends for local
recommendations or try searching on
www.lawsociety.org.uk
3. Make an appointment to see your solicitor.
Consider leaving a charitable gift to your parish. Once you have made provision for your loved ones, you may wish to include a gift in your will to St. Bartholomew’s church. This can be an expression of your gratitude and thanksgiving towards God, and can help keep your church alive, and transform its future.
You can discuss gifts in wills in confidence with Fr. Michael, Thelma Collins or Jon Kaye
