NEW! Bring Last Year’s Palms

We will again be collecting last year’s palms to burn and prepare the ashes for this year’s Ash Wednesday celebration. Please bring them to the church or the office by next Sunday, February 7.

NEW! Ash Wednesday Schedule & Lenten Rules

Masses on Ash Wednesday (February 10) will be at 7:00am, 8:30am (School Mass – all welcome), and 7:00pm.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. Pregnant women and others for whom fasting would be perilous to their health are exempted. Those fasting are permitted to eat one full meal; two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal.

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding for all from age 14 onwards. Broths made from meat (as long as there are no pieces of meat in it) are permissible according to the letter of the law, though perhaps not fully coherent with its spirit. Vegetarians do well on days of abstinence to give up a certain food or dish that they regularly enjoy, since they already give up meat, not for penitential reasons, but as a way of life.

NEW! Lenten Schedule

Stations of the Cross and Benediction for the School: Fridays at 1:15pm in the church.

Lenten Meals (Fridays only): February 12, February 19, February 26, March 4, March 11, and March 18, 5:30-6:30pm in the Cafeteria.

Parish Stations of the Cross and Benediction: Fridays of Lent at 7:00pm in the church.

NEW! First Saturday

Mass will be on Sat., February 6 at 8:30am.

Operation Warm-Up

It’s time to gather up any extra blankets, warm clothing, hats and gloves for Operation Warm-Up. Volunteers are needed to sort and deliver donations after Mass on Sunday, February 7. For more info about specific needs or where to bring your donations, speak with David Renda.

NEW! Altar Sodality Meeting

The Ladies Altar Sodality will meet on Monday, February 8 at 9:15am in the Fireside Room.

School Roof Status

Work was due to have concluded (in large part) this Saturday, 1/30. Thank you for all your prayers! — Father Jerabek

Discernment Retreat with Pope Francis

Know a young woman who might make a good Sister? Pass this information along to her!

This retreat is for single women, aged 17 to 35, who are discerning the consecrated religious life or would like to learn more about it. The words of Pope Francis will guide us during these days of reflection as we conclude the Year of Consecrated Life. The retreat will begin on February 5 at 6:00pm and will end on February 7 at 2:00pm. There is no charge. The Little Sisters of the Poor are located at 1655 McGill Avenue, Mobile, AL 36604. Register by February 3 via phone at 251-591-3700 or via email at [email protected]. Guest lodging may be extended for participants who would like to stay for two extra days of prayer and service (which will include taking the elderly poor to the Mardi Gras parades in downtown Mobile that Tuesday).

NEW! Lenten Devotionals

Copies of the Magnificat Lenten Companion will be available in church starting next weekend. Please initially take only one per person so that we can be sure that there are enough for all.

NEW! RCIA News

This year we have one person who is to be baptized (and given the other sacraments) and several people who are to make their Profession of Faith and be received into the Church. All will attend the Rite of Election at the Cathedral of St. Paul on Sunday, February 14, presided over by Bishop Baker. Please pray for our catechumen and our candidates as they prepare to join the Church at Easter!

NEW! Confraternity of Christian Mothers

The Confraternity of Christian Mothers, Birmingham Chapter, will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, February 17 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood. Holy Hour & Confessions will be offered at 6:00pm, followed by Holy Mass at 7:00pm. Bishop Baker will speak following Mass and share about his recent time of great, unexpected suffering. Visitors are most welcome. Please bring your husband, family members, and friends. For more information, please contact Janice Nelson at [email protected] or 205-999-1141. On Facebook, search for “Confraternity of Christian Mothers Birmingham”.

World Day for Consecrated Life

In 1997, Pope St. John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration takes place on the weekend of February 6/7, 2016 with the aim of highlighting the gift of consecrated persons to the Church. Let us pray for all those in consecrated life, that they many continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to their vocation.

Lent Is Almost Here

It’s hard to believe it, but it’s almost time for Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent. Ash Wednesday is rather early this year – February 10. We therefore need to start thinking now – and praying – about what acts of self-denial we will undertake during this sacred time so that we can grow in the love of God and neighbor and so prepare ourselves well for the Feast of Easter. It is not a sign of Christian maturity to give up the same exact thing every single year! Giving up chocolate or caffeine may be difficult, but our capacity for self-denial should be much greater than that, and if that’s all we’re capable of then it means we really need to stretch ourselves and seek to “grow” out of our rut. Remember always the words of Christ in the Gospel: “You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt. 5:48). We are not perfectionists, but seek Christian perfection with the help of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who never commands what is beyond our capacity to do with the help of his grace.

NEW! Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign

From February 10 to March 20 our community will take part in 40 Days for Life, an international, ecumenical pro-life campaign that aims to use prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil, and community outreach to help end abortion in our nation. The Birmingham campaign will take place daily at Planned Parenthood (1211 S. 27th Place, off Highland Ave) from 7:00am to 5:00pm. We encourage all people of faith to take part in this campaign and so follow the directive of Pope Francis to “be bearers of hope and continue to work to bring an end to abortion throughout the world, everyday”. For more information on the campaign, for ways to help, and to register, please call 205-305-0950 or visit the web page, http://40daysforlife.com/Birmingham.
