Why I can say, T.G.I.F. Again!

Since my ordination in 1990 the phrase T.G.I.F. or Thank God itsFriday has completely fallen away from my vernacular. Fridaystopped being a day to wind down and breathe a sigh of relief, andbecame a day to rev up and anticipate a busy Saturday of meetings, weddings, funerals and weekend Masses. But last week whilebrowsing through a bookstore I saw a plaque which gave newrelevance to T.G.I.F and officially restored the phrase to my

lexicon! The plaque read: T.G.I.F. Thank God Im Forgiven!

Mercy is Gods greatest gift and those who have been so privilegedto receive it are profoundly changed and eternally grateful. Godsmercy and forgiveness is our greatest motivation for praisinghim and our most compelling reason for serving him.Forgiveness restores our hope and our sanity! It redeems our pastand recovers our future. Saul, the Pharisee, vehemently andviolently persecuted the first Christians. Mercy changed him into St.Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles. Peter denied Jesus three times;mercy transformed him into the leader of the Christian community.Moses was a murderer and a fugitive. Mercy turned him into a greatprophet and instrument of Gods deliverance. A broken sinful womanin todays Gospel reduced to tears and shame at the feet of Jesuswalks away restored and saved when she is offered and acceptsJesus forgiveness.

Are you seeing the pattern here? None of us are worthy orequipped to do the work of God on our own. We cannot earn Godslove or a seat in heaven. God owes us nothing, but offers useverything. If we accept his offer however, there is one requirement. We must share what we have received at every opportunity we aregiven. In other words, we must go into business for our Fatherwho art in heaven. Sin cripples us, blinds us, and binds us so thatwe are not even free to follow the Master. But free we must be to

continue his saving work! Time is of the essence. Confront andconfess your sins TODAY so that you too can spend your tomorrowthanking God that you are forgiven and helping get the word out thatthere is plenty more where that came from Thank God!
