    Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

    Doing What Is Necessary

Todays message is all about prayer; specifically about itsindispensable nature. This brought to mind a poem I read yearsago by an unknown author entitle, The Difference. I got upearly one morning and rushed into the day; I had so much toaccomplish, that I didnt take time to pray. Problems just tumbledaround me, and heavier came each task; Why doesnt God help

me? I wondered. He answered, You didnt ask. I wanted to seejoy and beauty, but the day toiled on grey and bleak; I wonderedwhy God didnt show me; He said, But you didnt seek. I tried tocome into Gods presence; I used all my keys at the lock. Godgently and lovingly chided, My child, you didnt knock. I woke upearly this morning and paused before entering the day, I had somuch to accomplish, that I HAD to take time to pray.

Daily prayer is necessary. It can also be very difficult. For thisreason the scriptures address the topic in the context of wordslike perseverance, battle, persistence, patience fight , acharge , etc. Sounds pretty serious! And that is the question:

How serious do we take our relationship with God? Nocommunication means no communion. No prayer means norelationship. Prayer is for the Christian what insulin is for thediabetic. The diabetic can choose not to take her insulin, butshes probably not going to survive the day very well!

So, how are you surviving these days? Prayer is like your cellphone charger. You need to plug it in every day. You need to re-connect it to its power-source or after a while it wont be muchgood to you. Without prayer we arent much good to God oreach other! When we see prayer as essential will fight for thetime to do it. We will persist and insist on doing whatever it takes

to keep our relationship with God alive, healthy, current, honest, and strong. So, the next time you find yourself, floundering, frustrated, worried, anxious and afraid, glance over at the cellphone charger that you depend on daily Then you will knowwhat you must do to have the power you need to get through theday!
