FROM THE PASTOR

Forming Generous Disciples Beginning this weekend, we will be presenting to the Hispanic Community a process entitled “Forming Generous Disciples.” For the English-language community this process resembles what we used to call “Stewardship,” with two significant changes. The first new aspect comes from the preaching of Pope Benedict the XVI who emphasized the concept of “co-responsibility.” As Pope Benedict says, the laity are called not only to collaborate with the clergy but must understand that they co-responsible for carrying out the mission of the Church. The second distinctive aspect to this process is education regarding the operation of a parish. While parishes around the world all celebrate the same sacraments and teach the same gospel, the financial and administrative aspects of parishes vary from country to country. One of the goals of Forming Generous Disciples is to educate our people who come from many countries in Latin America about how parishes can and must operate in the United States. In this first year we will be using the Forming Generous Disciples process only in the Hispanic community, as a pilot program to see what works and what needs to be improved. Next year, we hope to use the process in both English and Spanish to encourage the “fully active and conscious participation” by every member of our parish.

Formando Discípulos Generosos A partir de este domingo, en la comunidad hispana, comenzamos un proceso que se llama «Formando Discípulos Generosos.» Para los de la comunidad de lengua inglesa, este proceso se asemeja a lo que llamábamos “Stewardship” – Administración, con dos cambios significativos. El primer nuevo aspecto proviene de la enseñanza de Papa Benedicto XVI, quien dio énfasis al concepto «co-responsibilidad.». Como dice el Papa Benedicto, los laicos están llamados a ser no solamente colaboradores sino co-responsables con el clero para el desarrollo de la misión de la iglesia. El segundo aspecto distinto del proceso, es la educación sobre el funcionamiento de una parroquia. Si bien es cierto que las parroquias de todo el mundo celebran los mismos sacramentos y proclaman el mismo evangelio, los aspectos financieros y administrativos de las parroquias cambian de país en país. Una de las metas de Formar Discípulos Generosos es educar a nuestra gente, quienes proviene de varios países latinoamerica-nos, sobre cómo puede y debe funcionar una parroquia en los Estados Unidos. En este primer año vamos a llevar a cabo el proceso de Formación de Discípulos Generosos solamente en la comunidad hispana, como un programa piloto, para ver cuales partes funcionan bien y cuales necesitan ser adaptadas. Y el próximo año, esperamos utilizar el proceso en ambas comunidades para animar la «participación plena, consciente y activa» de todo miembro de la parroquia.

We often hear of "Religious Orders" and have at St. Augustine members of the Carboni Sisters. I have found a list of 277 reli-gious orders and am led to believe the number is significant higher. Over the next several weeks we will review the diversi-ty in religious orders. Catholic religious orders are one of two types of religious institutes. The major form is one of consecrat-ed life in the Roman Catholic Church. They are organizations of laity and/or clergy who take solemn vows and who live a com-mon life following a religious rule or constitution under the leadership of a religious superior. This is in contrast to the sim-ple vows taken by the members of religious congregations bet-ter known as diocesan or parish priest. According to the Vatican there are four branches of religious orders:

* Monastic orders: orders founded by monks or nuns who live and work in a monastery and recite the divine office. * Mendicant orders: orders founded by friars or nuns who live from alms, recite the divine office, and have active participation in apostolic endeavors. * Canons Regulars: orders founded by canons and canonesses regular who recite the divine office and generally are in charge of a parish. * Clerks Regulars: orders founded by priests who are also reli-gious men with vows and have a very active apostolic live.

GENEROUS DISCIPLES

Forming Generous Disciples is a great mission that leads us to co-responsibility.

What is Co-responsibility? It is the response of gratitude that we Christians give to the generosity of God, thus creating a way of life, thus guiding our parish to the month of co-responsibility that begins today, October 28, to which we are summoned to the altar . "As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace." (1Peter 4:10) The proclamation of the Gospel is not possible if we are not a church in communion. Hence, the challenge is born of integrating into a single project all the faithful of the parish community, offering as co-responsibles, our Time, Talent and Treasure to our Lord for the blessings received.

San Gregorio Magno nos proporcionó una buena comprensión de

Gabriel es "La Fortaleza de Dios"; y Rafael es El "Remedio de

Dios". Cada vez que se debe realizar un acto de maravilloso poder,

se envía a Michael, de modo que su acción y su nombre puedan dejar

claro que nadie puede hacer lo que Dios hace con su poder superior.

Gabriel, que se llama la fuerza de Dios, fue enviado a María. Él vino

a anunciar el que apareció como un hombre humilde para sofocar los

poderes cósmicos. Así, la fuerza de Dios anunció la venida del Señor

de los poderes celestiales, poderosos en la batalla. Rafael significa el

remedio de Dios, porque cuando tocó los ojos de Tobit para curarlo,

desterró la oscuridad de su ceguera. Por lo tanto, como él debe sanar,

se le llama correctamente el remedio de Dios.

DISCÍPULOS GENEROSOS

Formando Discipulos Generosos es una gran misión que nos lleva a la corresponsabilidad.

Que es la Corresponsabilidad?

Es la respuesta de agradecimiento que nosotros los cristianos damos a la generosidad de Dios creando así como un estilo de vida, encaminando así nuestra parroquia al mes de la corresponsabilidad que inicia hoy 28 de octubre, al cual somos convocados al altar.

“Que cada cual ponga al servicio de los demás la Gracias que ha recibido como buenos administradores de las diversas Gracias de Dios.” (1 de Pedro 4:10) El anuncio del Evangelio no es posible si no somos iglesia en communion. De ahí nace el reto de integrarse en un único proyecto a todos los fieles de la comunidad parroquial, ofrendando nuestro Tiempo,Talento y Tesoro a nuestro Padre Dios como corresponsables de las bendiciones recibidas.

FORMATION AND SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN (GRADES 2-5)

Our program for formation and sacramental preparation for children in grades 2-5 in under way. There are a total of 158 children participating this year of whom 103 are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receive Holy Communion for this first time and 42 are preparing to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Throughout the year you might see children with a blue bag (that says “Go Seek and Find). In this bag they carry the Bible which they will be using over the course of the year. At their first class, we began with an overview of the Bible and how to look up Bible passages before looking up the first of many Bible stories we’ll be reading over the course of the year.

As the children continue to learn about and grow in their faith, we ask that you keep them and their families in your thought and prayers.

EDGE/LIFTEEN

This week at the Edge/LIFETEEN Session, your child learned about one of the most prominent and hardest part of the Creed to un-derstand--Jesus is “begotten not made” and “consubstantial with the Father.” They learned that Jesus has a unique relationship with God the Father as His only begotten Son and that Jesus is consubstantial with the Father, meaning that they are of the same nature and essence. Essentially this reveals the pivotal marker of our Faith that Jesus was both fully man and fully God. Here are some questions to ask your son or daughter this week: • What part of the Creed did you learn about? What does it mean? • What would our faith be like if Jesus were only God or only man? • How does this teaching affect our daily life and the way we live our faith? Our next session will be held on Monday, Nov. 5th from 6:30-8pm in the hall.

PROGRAMAS DE FORMACIÓN Y PREPARACIÓN SACRAMENTAL PARA NIÑOS (GRADOS 2-5)

Nuestro programa de formación y preparación sacramental para niños en los grados 2-5 ya ha comenzado. CLOTHING CLOSET

If you are cleaning out your closets and have used clothing that is good condition, please consider donating to our Clothing Closet. All sizes for children, women and men are needed. Please drop off clothing in the bin located at the entrance to the Outreach Center. The clo-set is open on Tuesdays from 10am - 3pm and Thursdays from 9am until noon.

SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE CHURCH Continuing with the reflection on the dignity of work, we observe that in the richest countries there are still remnants of discrimination against women in terms of wages and positions of employment. Add to this that the federal minimum wage is not enough to support a life with dignity. There are people who have one, two and three jobs to support the family. However, there are company presidents who get ten to fifteen times more, compared to the workers. The above let us notice a great economic inequality that can not be sustained for a long time. Therefore, an economic equilibrium must be established where everyone receives the opportunities to live a dignified life.

The canonization of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, lets us contemplate that we will be blessed, blessed, insofar as we make our cause the poor, the defenseless, those who have no voice …

LA JUSTICIA SOCIAL EN LA IGLESIA Continuando con la reflexion sobre la dignidad del trabajo, observamos que en los países más ricos todavía quedan los remanentes de discriminación en contra de la mujer en cuanto salarios y posiciones de empleo. Se suma a esto que el salario mínimo federal no es suficiente como para sostener una vida con dignidad. Hay personas que tienen uno, dos y tres trabajos para sostener la familia. Sin embargo, hay presidentes de compañías que obtienen de diez a quince veces más, comparado con lo de los obreros. Lo anterior nos deja notar una gran desigualdad económica la que no se puede sostener por mucho tiempo. Por tanto, se debe establecer un equilibrio económico donde todos reciban las oportunidades para vivir una vida digna.

La canonizacion de Mons. Oscar Arnulfo Romero, nos deja contemplar que seremos bienaventurados, bendecidos, en la medida en que hacemos nuestra la causa de los pobres, de los indefensos, de los que no tienen voz…

THE WOMEN’S GUILD NEEDS YOUR HELP

Have you ever helped an old lady cross the street? Can you help the gracefully aging ladies of St. Augustine Women’s Guild set up and take down their Christmas Bazaar structure? Can you share 15 minutes, 30 minutes or more on any of these days?

October 31 - Wednesday - 11:30am—12noon Task—to carry finished crafts from the attic to the Commons.

November 1 - 2 - Thursday or Friday at any time. Task—to bake a cake, a pie, etc. to donate to the Bazaar.

November 2 - Friday 10am—12noon - Church Hall Task—to set up tables in the Hall, to display crafts for sale, to ar-range, White Elephant donations in the Commons.

November 3 and 4 - Saturday and Sunday Task—to visit and support the Bazaar.

November 4 - Sunday Task—to dismantle and store anything left at the end of the Bazaar.

Male and Female strength equally welcome. Come if you can. If interested, call Janet Bettinger at 804-272-0440.
