“ I am deeply sorry. I made a mistake and it will not happen again.” These are the most common words when we ask for forgiveness. Forgiveness is something that
most people find difficult to ask. But, why do we find it so difficult to ask for forgiveness? Experts coincide that the greatest difficulty in showing repentance for something we have done lies in the fact that, by accepting our error, the idealized image we have of ourselves gets broken. Furthermore, not only do we find hard to ask for forgiveness, to forgive those who offend us is even harder. How could we forgive when our feelings have been hurt, when our integrity as human beings and children of God has not been respected, when someone attempts against our lives or against the life of a loved one. When the one who attacks us repents, do we forgive him? This weekend, the readings of the Word of God hold a rich teaching about forgiveness. We cannot live with resentments in our hearts, we should not harbor and feed hatred, rancor, and anger. Pardon and mercy come from God, our pardon should be based on acknowledging that just as God forgives us, we should forgive our fellow human beings. We do not expect God to forgive us once or twice or a limited number of times, but always. It is not written that we have, let us say, ten possibilities to go to confession and that when our quota to ask for forgiveness is reached, there is nothing left. If that is the case in relation with God, it should also be in relation with our neighbor. We should always make the effort not to refuse an offer to reconcile. When Peter asked Jesus, “’Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times’” (Mt 18:21-22). Jesus teaches us that we should forgive always. Is there someone with whom you should reconcile? Let us ask the Lord to help us to forgive as He, who is compassionate and merciful, does.

a la mayoría de los seres humanos. Pero, ¿por qué nos cuesta tanto pedir disculpas? Los expertos coinciden en que la mayor dificultad de mostrar arrepentimiento por algo que se ha hecho radica en que, al aceptar el error, se rompe la imagen idealizada que uno tiene de sí mismo. Pero no sólo nos cuesta pedir perdón, el perdonar al que nos ofende es algo mucho más difícil. Cómo perdonar cuando han herido nuestros sentimientos, cuando no se respeta nuestra integridad como seres humanos e hijos de Dios, cuando alguien atenta contra nuestra vida o la vida de algún ser querido. Cuando la persona que nos ataca o agrede se arrepiente, ¿la perdonamos? Este fin de semana, las lecturas de la Palabra de Dios contienen una rica enseñanza sobre el perdón. No podemos vivir con resentimientos en nuestro corazón, no debemos albergar y alimentar el odio, el rencor y la cólera. El perdón y la misericordia provienen de Dios, nuestro perdón debe estar basado en reconocer que así como Dios nos perdona, nosotros debemos perdonar a nuestros semejantes. No esperamos que Dios nos perdone una o dos veces o un número limitado de veces, sino siempre. No está escrito que tengamos, por ejemplo, sólo diez posibilidades de confesarnos y una vez que se agote nuestra cuota de pedir perdón, no queda nada. Si eso es cierto en nuestra relación con Dios, también debe serlo en nuestras relaciones con los demás. Siempre debemos esforzarnos por no rechazar una oferta de reconciliación. Ante la pregunta de Pedro: “Si mi hermano me ofende, ¿cuántas veces tengo que perdonarlo? ¿Hasta siete veces?”. Jesús le contestó: “No sólo hasta siete, sino hasta setenta veces siete”. Jesús nos enseña que debemos perdonar siempre. ¿Hay alguien con quien deban reconciliarse? Pidámosle al Señor que nos ayude a perdonar como Él, que es compasivo y misericordioso.

FOOD DRIVE We will start again collecting food for the Christian Sharing Center in Longwood. The weekend of September 26th & 27th we will be handing out the bags for non-perishables groceries. You can donate as few or as many food items as you want. Please bring your food bags back to the church the weekend of October 3rd & 4th. Together we will help those in need. Thank you for your support.
GIFT STORE St. Augustine Gift Store will re-open its door one weekend a month starting October 3rd & 4th. We will continue to follow the recommendations of the state and local governments and health officials. Please note:
