ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH

How does being “baptized with the Holy

Spirit” (Acts 1:5) differ from the baptism of John

the Baptist in the Gospels?

A person who was baptized with the water

baptism that John conveyed did not receive the

Holy Spirit. That precious gift had to wait until

Jesus ascended into heaven, and then sent the

Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. From that time

on, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within anyone

who steps forward in faith and is baptized.

The term “Baptized in the Holy Spirit,” as

used by Catholic and other “charismatics,” means

“an internal religious experience (or a prayer ex-

perience) whereby the individual experiences the

risen Christ in a personal way. Rev. Vincent

Walsh (once an episcopal vicar of the Charis-

matic Renewal) describes it that way. He goes on

to say that the term “religious experience” means

that the person’s imagination, memory and feel-

ings are touched by God’s action, as well as his

intellect and will. This experience is different

from, but based upon, a religious faith which gen-

erally affects only the intellectual faculties. Signs

of this religious experience may, but need not, ac-

company this “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” and

include things like consolation in prayer, the gift

of tears, a profound feeling of a deep love for

Christ, or of repentance and conversion.

In the Sacraments of Baptism and Confir-

mation, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit who

comes to dwell within us. However, many powers

associated with this indwelling are bound up, un-

tapped so to speak. A “release of the power of the

Spirit” means that the full effects of the sacra-

ments are actually realized, as the Spirit leads the

Christian into a new life of prayer, of outlook and

behavior.

ADORATION CHAPEL

“Ascending once again to the Inaccessible Light . . . You remain still in the ‘valley of tears’, hid-

den beneath the appearance of a white host.” ~St. Therese of Lisieux

“Our best life, all our spiritual life, is nothing but a succession of visitations, visitations from

Mary bringing Jesus with her. But nowhere is the similitude so faithful as it is in the Blessed

Sacrament. How often when we come near to the tabernacle a secret fire comes forth and our

hearts burn within us without apparent cause. Cares fall off, tears are dried, doubts melt away, temptations

are paralyzed, anxieties are allayed, our soul is bathed in quiet sudden jubilee. Joy, exultation, praise, delight,

the sense of forgiveness, and the spirit of worship. These are exactly the fruits produced within us as they

were produced in [John] the Baptist’s soul.” ~Fr. Faber

St. Anthony of Padua became a chaste youth, a friend of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a patron of the Pope, and a

perpetual adorer of the Holy Eucharist desirous for the salvation of souls.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Where did he go? Many times when we think of those who have died, we imagine escape from this world

to a purely spiritual place. Jesus' Ascension can leave us in a place of confusion. What happens to Jesus? And

why does this matter to us?

The Ascension has been confirmed in the Creed for two millennia. In Jesus' Ascension, we're invited to

consider our own ultimate end. Regardless of death's reality now, we believe in the resurrection of the body

and the reunification of body and soul. One day, earth and heaven will meet perfectly and without end. We

anticipate this "new heaven and a new earth" at every Mass and throughout the beauty, truth, and love of the

Church and her members. Today, celebrate a foreshadowing of the fullness we all await!

THE COMMUNION RITE WRITTEN BY RITA THIRON & FR. RYAN ROJO

Sharing a meal is a very human experience. When family and friends gather around a table more is accom-

plished than consuming food. Relationships are built; unity is fostered; bonds are strengthened. It is actually

this experience of meal sharing that can help us appreciate our experience of Holy Communion.

The theological dimension, too, helps us to understand this sacrament. In the Old Testament, God asked the

Chosen People to share in various sacrifices (cf. Exodus 12:1-8; Leviticus 7:11-19). Depending on the sacrifice,

the faithful were encouraged to eat the meat, grain or fruit of the offering. But Jesus Christ turned the former

ideas of ritual sacrifices inside-out. Jesus became both Priest and Victim! We still feast on his everlasting sacri-

fice when we follow his command to “take and eat” and “take and drink” (Mk 14: 12-24; 1 Cor 11:23-26). The

Lord commanded that “his Body and Blood should be received as spiritual food by those of the faithful who are

properly disposed” (GIRM 80). As so, at the Lord’s invitation, we gather around his altar of sacrifice and dine

on his sacred meal.

The Communion Rite can be examined in three distinct parts: The preparation of Communion, the reception of

Holy Communion, and the period after Communion

PREPARING FOR HOLY COMMUNION - First, we take some time to prepare to receive Jesus. We are about to

enter into a life-changing, intimate encounter with Christ and we need to prepare. We begin with the prayer that

Christ himself taught us to pray (Mt 6:9-13; Lk 11:1-4) - the Lord’s Prayer.

In the third century, Tertullian reminded us that the Lord’s Prayer is “truly the summary of the whole Gospel.”

It makes sense, therefore, this prayer is perfectly placed just before we are to receive the Eucharist. In it, we

turn to Jesus’ Father and ours. We give God praise, we pray for our needs (our “daily bread”), and we ask God

to forgive our sins. All this should be a necessary precondition for the reception of Holy Communion. The

priest, alone, prays an “embolism” (a brief insertion) in which he asks God to deliver us from all evil, free us

from sin, and keep us safe from all distress. The concluding acclamation (For the kingdom…) has its origins in

eastern traditions and it has long been associated with the Lord’s Prayer. (Other Christian communities often

make it part of the prayer.)

The Kiss of Peace is an ancient gesture. St. Paul reminded the Christians of Rome to “greet one another with a

holy kiss” (Romans 16:16), and it is mentioned throughout early Christian literature. In the Middle Ages, an

actual kiss was replaced by the use of “pax board” - a wooden or brass board which was passed around for eve-

ryone to kiss. In recent times, the rite of peace has been revived, but the gesture is usually that of a handshake.

When we exchange a sign of peace, we show our willingness to live by the peace of Christ and we pray that the

peace of Christ may dwell in those whom we encounter.

The ritual of the Breaking of the Bread originates in the Gospel narratives of the Last Supper, St. Paul tells us

that the one loaf of bread is a sign of our oneness in Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 10:16-17). Using larger, unleav-

ened loaves at our Eucharistic celebrations could foster an awareness of this fundamental symbolism. Most of-

ten, we use individual hosts which are distributed from one vessel into multiple vessels (ciboria). During the

Breaking of the Bread, the ancient litany Lamb of God is sung or recited.

To be continued next week
