OUR MISSIONSaint Anthony of Padua Parish is a welcoming, loving Catholic community, centered in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.
Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need.
We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to con-tinue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family.

Palm Sunday
“Pilate addressed them a third time, ‘What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime.’” The Palm Sunday Gos-pel readings present a sad picture of grown-ups who succumb to peer pressure. Three times, Pilate proclaimed that Jesus was not guilty. But yet, he gave in to the mounting pressure from the crowd, whose “voices prevailed... and he handed Jesus over to them.” Also, during the opening Gospel at the procession of palms, we see the adoring crowds hailing Jesus as “the king who comes in the name of the Lord,” but only too soon the chorus changes as the voice of the crowd cries out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” What happened to Je-sus’ loyal supporters? How did the mob mentality overtake them all? Then too, we have Peter, who in comfortable company with Jesus and his friends promised eternal faithfulness. But when others began ask-ing uncomfortable questions, he caved: “Woman, I do not know him.”
These three scenarios give us a chance to reflect on our own faith-fulness as we journey into Holy Week. Like Pilate, do we know the truth but abandon it when it becomes unpopular? Public opinion these days declares much Church teaching to have fallen out of fa-vor—will we renege like Pilate or stand fast to the faith? The fickle crowds demonstrate another kind of weakness, where instead of thinking for themselves, people just followed those around them. Are we guilty of this kind of passive intellectual laziness? How about Pe-ter’s problem: do we change our story based on current company, or do we live as consistent Christian witnesses in the world? This week, may we have the courage to accompany Jesus all the way to the cross, no matter what anyone else may do.

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY HOW TO GO TO CONFESSION
This Monday, March 21, Monday of Holy Week, every parish in the Diocese of Rockville Centre (and Brooklyn, and the Archdiocese of New York, too) will have priests available for confession for a large part of the day. The goal of providing an extended time for priests to hear confessions on this "Diocesan Day of Reconciliation" is to have as many people as possible celebrate the sacrament, perhaps especially those who have been away from Confession for a long time. Why not take advantage of this opportunity? Especially if you have not been to Confession in 5 or 10 or 20 years (or even longer), this is a great opportunity. We promise you a warm welcome! We promise you an experience of joy! We promise you that you will have an encounter with Jesus that will leave you feeling the best that you have felt in a long, long time! In case you feel a little rusty about going to the Sacrament of Penance, here are some basic steps for you to follow. Don't get worried too much about the "how to," though; the priest will be very willing to help you if you explain to him that you are nervous or unfamiliar with the rite. 1. Prepare ahead of time. Make sure you spend some time ex-amining your conscience, prayerfully recalling your sins and preparing what you want to tell the priest. Think about specific actions, general patterns, and attitudes. Ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 2. Go to the priest. You can go anonymously behind a screen or curtain, or you can go face-to-face. If it's helpful, begin by making the Sign of the Cross and say-ing, "Bless me Father, for I have sinned." 'Then tell the priest how long it has been since your last confession. 3. Confess your sins. Listen carefully for spiritual guidance he might offer. Tell the priest your sins. Be as direct and succinct as possible, but give him enough information so he can offer some words of spiritual guidance and encouragement. Take to heart the way the priest is trying to help you.
4. Receive your penance. The priest will recommend some ac-tion, a penance, for you to do to indicate your sorrow and your conversion. It might be to say a prayer, it might be to do some act of self-denial, or it might be to do some act of charity or service toward someone else. If it sounds too difficult to ac-complish or if you have any questions, do not hesitate to talk it over with him. 5. Pray an Act of Contrition. The priest will ask you to say a prayer of contrition (sorrow) out loud. You may express your sorrow and your intention to avoid sin in the future in your own words, or you may use the words of a formal Act of Con-trition, either one given to you to read by the priest, or one that you have brought or memorized. Here is one suggested form: My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly in-tend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suf-fered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. 6. Receive absolution. Here is the best part! The priest prays the prayer of absolution, proclaiming God's forgiveness of your sins. Listen to and reflect on these beautiful and powerful words said by the priest. 7. Conclude by praising God. The priest may say something like, "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good," and you may respond, "His mercy endures forever." 8. Go forth forgiven, renewed, and changed! Go forth, with God's help, to begin living your new life in freedom, having been freed from the slavery of sin.

On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Each day, the news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a community that struggles to remain in the land of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. Please help support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to the Good Friday Collection. This Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and oth-ers to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s people in the Holy Land. Please be generous.

In ancient times, palm branches symbolized goodness and victory. They were often depicted on coins and important buildings. Solo-mon had palm branches carved into the walls and doors of the tem-ple (1 Kings 6:29). Again at the end of the Bible, people from every nation raise palm branches to honor Jesus (Revelation 7:9).
Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9), when palm branches were placed in His path, before His arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.
In the Catholic Church, this feast now coincides with that of Passion Sunday, which is the focus of the Mass which follows the service of the blessing of palms. The palms are saved in many churches to be burned on Shrove Tuesday the following year to make ashes used in Ash Wednesday services. The Catholic Church considers the blessed palms to be sacramentals. The vestments for the day are deep scarlet red, the color of blood, indicating the supreme redemptive sacrifice Christ (Source: Wikipedia)

“THE JUBILEE OF MERCY IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER IN DEPTH INTO THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S GOODNESS AND LOVE. IN THIS LENTEN TIME, THE CHURCH INVITES US TO GET TO KNOW BETTER THE LORD JESUS, AND TO LIVE FAITH IN A WAY COHERENT WITH A LIFESTYLE THAT EXPRESSES THE FATHER’S MERCY. MY LIFE, MY ATTITUDE, MY WAY OF GOING ABOUT THE WORLD MUST BE A CON-CRETE SIGN OF THE FACT THAT GOD IS CLOSE TO US. LITTLE GESTURES OF LOVE, OF TENDERNESS, OF ATTENTION THAT LET US THINK THAT THE LORD IS WITH US, CLOSE TO US. IN THIS WAY WE OPEN THE DOOR OF MERCY.” ~ POPE FRANCIS
In keeping with Pope Francis's suggestion to "fast from indifference," we encourage every child to perform a kind deed for someone each week and then write it on a leaf. Return the leaf and, throughout Lent, we will watch our tree (located in the Lower Church) begin to bud with these Leaves of Mercy. Leaves may be picked up and returned at the Young Stewards Corner in the back vestibule of the church.
Questions? Please contact Kristen Ng at 266-1049 or [email protected]. May God bless you as we journey through the season of Lent!

Northport and East Northport Rotary clubs are collecting shoes to help Soles4Souls in fight against global poverty
Attention anyone with a closet: Those shoes you no longer want are desperately needed to fight the human tragedy of natural disasters and global poverty.
The World Bank estimates that approximately 400 million children worldwide – more than the entire U.S. population – live in pro-nounced poverty. Millions of these children will grow up never hav-ing had a pair of shoes, resulting in significant challenges for their health and wellbeing. Lacking proper footwear, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school. And tens of millions of these poverty-stricken, barefoot boys and girls will be infected with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases like hookworm, causing last-ing suffering and lifelong debilitation.
What you can do to help: Used and new shoes of any kind (yes, high heels and boots) can be dropped off between March 1 and March 31, to the vestibule of the
Church. Please tie shoes together in pairs
Year End Contribution Statements If you would like a copy of your 2015 contributions, please call the rectory and request to have a copy available for pick up or have it mailed to you.

Of course any other items you wish to donate will be gratefully ac-cepted, but the item that we are concentrating on will help us ensure that this item will be in supply for our clients. All items can be left in
the rear of the Church before and after all the weekend Masses. During the week items can be brought to Parish Outreach, Monday -Friday between the hours of 10:00AM and 2:00PM. Thank you for helping us minister to the lambs of our community who are in need.
