6th Sunday of Easter

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” It’s not uncommon to associate the word “commands” with images of dictatorship. We can tend to think of commandments as obstacles to real freedom, imposed by some angry, powerful tyrant who just wants to be in con-trol. Call them directions, or suggestions, or guidelines if you will, but not commands! It almost feels like an insult. But today, Jesus breaks out of these stereotypes. He casts the commandments in the context of love. He does not in-sist on any obligation to follow them. Rather, he says that whoever observes his commandments “is the one who loves me.”

So just what commandments will we be following if we love the Lord? When Jesus was questioned about this, he said the two greatest commandments are to “love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind,” and to “love your neighbor as yourself,” (Mt 22:37-39). Even the commands he gives us are rooted in love, not legalism. Of course, when we follow these principles we will naturally keep the traditional Ten Commandments, which give more specific instructions on how to love God and neighbor.

As we know from experience, when we truly love someone, we desire to make them happy. When they are content, we are content. So the more we love Jesus, the more we will want to please him. Thus, following his commandments ultimately makes us happy too. Understood in these terms, the commandments don’t stifle us, they satisfy us! God doesn’t restrict our freedom; he respects it. Ultimately, it is our choice whether or not we will live the life of love that Jesus offers us.

From the Pastor’s Pen

-4-

My dear People,

As we approach the month of June we approach the times of clergy changes in our parishes. Here at St. Anthony’s Monsignor Joseph Mirro will replace me as Pastor, with Fr. Innocent Amasiorah replacing Fr. Lachlan Cameron as Associate Pastor. Fr. Vian Ntegerejlmana and Fr. Robert Kline will remain as Associate Pastors. Fr. Cameron’s new assignment will be to head the Diocesan Office of Liturgy and Worship with residence at the Cathedral in Rockville Centre, and my new job will be retirement.

I print below two brief biographies of our new priests.

Born in Nigeria, Father Innocent Amasiorah is a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and another in Theology from Seat of Wisdom Seminary, Owerri, Nigeria.

He has worked as a pastor of different parishes in Nigeria before proceeding to the US to further his academic learning.

Here in the United States, Father Innocent graduated with a Masters Degree in Pastoral Theology from St John's University, Jamaica New York and presently he is a Ph.D full time student at Fordham University, Bronx NY.

He plays soccer, lawn and table tennis, and he loves to read, teach and preach.

Joseph Anthony Mirro was born in Corona, in Queens. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Terry Lane, off Townline Road, in Commack. At that time, Christ the King parish had not yet been established, so his family began attending St. Anthony’s parish. It was in the pews of the old church that the young Joseph Mirro received religious instruction (catechism) from the Franciscan brothers. In the fifth grade, he received Confirmation in the newly -built school auditorium. After attending Commack schools, he entered St. An-thony’s High School before the Franciscan brothers moved the school from San Remo to Melville.

Upon being graduated from St. Anthony’s, Monsignor Mirro entered the Society of St. Paul, a religious order. In order to enter, young Mr. Mirro needed a certificate of his Confirmation. His mother, Victoria, came to St. Anthony’s rectory to get the certificate. There she met the recently ordained Father John Dunne. Young Father Dunne encouraged Joseph in his vocation from then on.

After novitiate in Canfield, Ohio, he attended nearby Youngstown State University. After attaining a B.A., Joe was transferred by the order to Dearborn, Michigan. He began to study for the priesthood at St. John’s Pro-vincial Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. It was there that he felt called to be a diocesan priest. The following year, he returned to Commack and entered Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington. A year ahead of him in the seminary were Father Richard Hoerning and Father Bruce Powers. Father Dunne was a spiritual director in the seminary at that time.

On January 5, 1975, seminarian Joe Mirro was ordained a deacon and assigned to Our Lady of Victory parish, Floral Park for a year and a half of pastoral experience. On April 24, 1976, Father Mirro was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg. His first assignment was to Maria Regina parish in Seaford. After serving there for eight years he was transferred to Blessed Sacrament parish in Valley Stream, where (soon to be Bishop) Monsignor John Dunne was pastor.

After serving for five years in Valley Stream, Father Joe was transferred to St. Patrick’s parish, Bay Shore. The following year he was appointed pastor of St. Jude’s parish in Mastic Beach. While he was pastor, St. Jude’s built a new church. In 2002, Father was in-stalled as pastor of Immaculate Conception parish in Westhampton Beach. After a few years he was also appointed dean of the Pe-conic Deanery. In March 2012, he was appointed a chaplain to his Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI and given the title Monsignor. As Monsignor Joe Mirro comes to St. Anthony’s, Immaculate Conception’s 100th anniversary year comes to a close with an extensive renovation and an addition built on the church.

Monsignor Joe Mirro is honored to be appointed pastor of St. Anthony’s parish.

Both Msgr. Mirro and Fr. Innocent look forward to coming here to St. Anthony’s and serving you with their dedication and talent.

Yours in Christ,

Congratulations to David Mastroianni who captained a team from The Burr School and who participated in the Saint Baldrick’s Day fund-raiser for children with cancer. David was recognized at the school for leading a team that raised over $1800.

Reprinted from last week since David’s picture did not print.

The fortieth day after Easter Sunday, commemorating the Ascension of Christ into heaven, according to Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and Acts 1:2.

In the Eastern Church this feast was known as analepsis, the taking up, and also as the episozomene, the salvation, denoting that by ascending into His glory Christ completed the work of our redemption. The terms used in the West, ascensio and, occasionally, ascensa, signify that Christ was raised up by His own powers. Tradition designates Mount Olivet near Bethany as the place where Christ left the earth. The feast falls on Thursday. It is one of the Ecu-menical feasts ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter and of Pente-cost among the most solemn in the calendar, has a vigil and, since the fifteenth century, an octave which is set apart for a novena of preparation for Pentecost, in accordance with the directions of Leo XIII.

Ascension Thursday—a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses: Wednesday—May 28—5pm Thursday—May 29—6:45am—9 am—12:10pm and 8 pm.
