St. Vincent de Paul Society St. Anthony Conference

In the month of April, through your gifts,

our Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able

to help 43 families celebrate the

peace of Easter by providing food,

Easter baskets for the children, and

by assisting families with some of

their utility bills.

We thank you for your continued

support. Today we will once again hold a Food Pantry to

continue to help those who have come to us for assistance.

We thank you for your generosity of non-perishable foods

and monetary donations. There will be no Food Pantry in

May but we will be back on our monthly schedules in June.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul welcomes those who wish to serve their neighbor. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at the phone number given below. If you or someone you know may need some assistance, have the person in need call the Parish Office at 815-469-3750 ext. 114 and leave a message. The call will be answered as soon as possible.

Deceased Our Parish Family Our condolences to the family and friends of

mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Request for Prayers for the Sick Please remember Desirea Soukal, Michael Beno, Loretta Spisak, Danny Reilly, Paul Wolfe, Grace Cantrell, in your Masses and prayers. Names will re-main on the list for three weeks. Please call the Parish Office at 815-469-3750 to add or remove names from the list.

We provide Signs of Hope to our Youth. When the cross and Marian Icon that Pope St. John Paul II gifted to the world's youth in 1985 visited Immaculate Conception Church in Elmhurst en route to World Youth Day 2019 in Panama, diocesan youth were able to pray in front of them. "Millions of people have touched that cross," says Grant. "It felt so cool to connect to them, to be part of this great movement of youth faith."

Ministering to youth and providing them with opportunit ies for

engagement is a top priority for our diocese. "This generation is hungry for truth and wants to make a tangible difference in the world," says Sheila Stevenson, youth ministry director. "We must accompany young people, providing knowledge of Jesus Christ and His love for them while nurturing their creativity and passion for serving others." Your gifts to the CMAA allow the Office of Youth Ministry to guide, form and mobilize 25,500 young people into missionary disciples who in turn make missionary disciples of our youth and young adults.

Thank you to everyone who has pledged a gift to the 2019 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your support will help provide the Signs of Home to so many through the 30 ministries our annual appeal benefits. Our parish’s goal is $112,200. Amount pledged $104,028; amount paid $68,078. Every gift-large and small, makes a difference! If we raise more than our goal, 70 percent of the amount over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish. Please prayerfully reflect on how you can best support this year’s CMAA. Thank you for your generosity.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Gospel today sees Peter and his colleagues after the

Resurrection, returning to Galilee and resuming the family

business. They are fishing by night. Although it is true

that fish feed by night, the mention of darkness here is

more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice.

Modern life keeps darkness effectively under control;

much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the

night for a century. Yet just as surely as the Risen Christ

breaks into Peter’s fishing, so does he break into the usual

patterns of our own darkness, electric lights

notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the people of the

light.

In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated in

monasteries, parishes, cathedrals, and homes everywhere,

is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its

claims, an act of praise for our light-bearing God, and a

commitment to carrying that light forward. Sunset is a

turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified

world, but still an effective reminder that one day darkness

overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a

hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of

Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday

“blackouts,” perhaps in a way as simple as a whispered

prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day.

LIFELONG SERVICE

“I am going fishing.” What an announcement! If

asked who made it, and not told it was a Bible quote,

we might guess “Grandpa” or “Uncle Fred,” or admit,

“I said that last summer!” But it is a Bible quote, from

today’s Gospel. The person who said it also once

declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living

God.” Yes, it’s Peter! So today’s announcement

seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said,

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But Peter

seems determined to return to his pre-apostolic

occupation, until Jesus intervenes, making Peter’s later

announcement deeper, “Lord, you know that I love

you,” and Peter’s apostolic calling clearer, “Tend my

sheep.” Peter does so. Acts presents the

consequences: Peter declares, “We must obey God

rather than men.” As Revelation proclaims, “Worthy

is the Lamb”—to receive Peter’s lifelong service, and

ours. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WORDS AND DEEDS

When people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel

at its beauty and power; when they see what little

impact it has on our daily lives, they laugh and poke

fun at us.
