READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: A COVENANT TO WELCOME IN, NOT TO WALL OUT

We can think that the covenant we have and keep with God is a way to keep others out or away from God’s grace. But God’s intent is exactly the opposite.

FIRST READING I shall gather the remnant of my flock and bring them back to their meadow (Jeremiah 23:1-6). God gave leaders to the people of Israel who were supposed to have cared for God’s people as a shepherd guards his flock, but they had not done this. They misled them into sinful ways and so misguided them that they led them to ruin. Now God was going to intervene and rescue His flock from the disaster into which they had fallen. God would gather up the remnant of His people and become their shepherd Himself. He would send an anointed one (Messiah), who would lead His flock along the paths of righteousness. SECOND READING

You who were once far off have become near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13-18). This reading celebrates the fact that Jesus’ death and resurrection destroyed all of the divisions that separate us from one another. When God established a covenant with the Jewish people, He was making a choice in their favor. This naturally excluded those who were not Jews. One group observed the law of God; the other did not even know the law. One group lived in peace with the Lord; the other did not even know His name. When Jesus died and put to death the alienation caused by our sins, we destroyed every boundary that separated one person from another. We are now one in Christ.

GOSPEL When Jesus saw the crowd, His heart was moved with pity for them, and He began to teach them (Mark 6:30-34). Last week we heard that Jesus had sent His disciples to proclaim the Good News. They had now returned, and Jesus invited them to go to a deserted spot to rest. Yet the crowd did not let them do this. They desperately needed Him. Jesus could see that they hungered for the Truth (that they were like sheep without a shepherd). This Gospel passage displays the tensions of ministry. While it is good and even necessary to take time out to recharge our batteries, there are situations in which this is impossible. Still, we always have to remember that it is Jesus who is the Shepherd (the humility to recognize that we are not the saviors of the world).

REFLECTION In Robert Frost’s poem, Mending Wall, the speaker, upon hearing his neighbor quoting the adage, “Good fences make good neighbors,” replies that he is tempted to respond that, before building a wall, he’d like to know what was being walled in or walled out, and who would be offended by it. In the Letter to the Ephesians, the image of a wall is used to describe the way in which the people of Israel had been separated from all the other peoples of the world — the Gentiles — by God’s covenant and commandments. But what was being walled in and walled out by God’s covenant with Israel? In the book of Genesis, when making the covenant with Abraham, God says explicitly that this is being done so that in Abraham “all the families of nations might be blessed” (Genesis 12:3). The point of the covenant and the commandments was not to divide Jews from Gentiles, but to create a space in which God’s will could be lived out with such fidelity that Israel would become a shining beacon, drawing all people into right relationship with God. But in Jesus’ day many had come to see the covenant as a wall separating them from other people. They were not asking themselves whom they were walling out and to whom they might be giving offense. They were not even asking whether viewing the covenant to be a means of blessing to all the nations. Jesus’ mission was to restore God’s covenant to its original purpose, preaching peace to those who were far off and to those who were near, reconciling Jew and Gentile in one body. But this was a mission that would ultimately lead Him to the cross, as He Himself fell victim to “the dividing wall of enmity.” Yet it would be through the cross and resurrection of Jesus that all people would come to share in the blessings of God’s Spirit.

T he apostles return from their first

mission of preaching and healing and report to Jesus. He gathers them in a “deserted” place, but the people find them and keep coming. Even their attempt to escape by boat to the other side of the lake is ruined once word gets out. We, who are Jesus' disciples today, have also been sent to share the Gospel with others. The demands of our busy lives can make us feel like Jesus and the 12 apostles. We wish for times of relaxation and renewal, but there are our jobs and school, there are errands to do, household chores to keep up with, volunteer commitments to keep, sports and family commitments. These are all good things, but we can be left feeling drained and tired as we try to keep up. Perhaps, we might take the opportunity this week to give ourselves permission to find the rest and relaxation that Jesus seeks for His disciples in today's Gospel. One of the gifts we can give to one another in our family life is help in finding the time and space to renew ourselves through prayer and in our celebration of the Eucharist.

For Adults: What do you do to rest so you can return to work refreshed?

Liturgical color for today: GREEN QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK:

CATECHIST CORNER

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is turning the heart toward God. When a person prays, he enters into a living relationship with God. Prayer is the great gate leading into faith. Someone who prays no longer lives on his own, for himself, and by his own strength. He knows there is a God to whom he can talk. People who pray entrust themselves more and more to God. Even now they seek union with the one whom they will encounter one day face to face. Therefore, the effort to pray daily is part of Christian life. Of course, one cannot learn to pray in the same way one learns a technique. As strange as it sounds, prayer is a gift one obtains through prayer.

Mission Statement We, the members of St. Anthony Catholic Church, gather together to worship and celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to live the Gospel in our daily lives. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
