The Ascension of the Lord May 24, 2020
“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION
There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Do-little
Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two
identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which
direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the
other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the
life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it
is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit,
which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its
mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels
today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the
clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in
Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also
tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the
age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in
faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls”
us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disci-
ple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the
same risen, ascended glory. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. world.

Father,
I have knowledge, so will You show me now,
How to use it wisely and find a way somehow
To make the world I live in a little better place,
And make life with its problems a little bit easier
to face. Grant me faith and courage and put pur-
pose in my days, And show me how to serve
Thee in effective ways. So my education, my
knowledge and my skill May find their true ful-
fillment as I learn to do Thy will. And may I ever
be aware in everything I do, That knowledge
comes from learning, and wisdom comes from
You.—Amen.

Loving God, we thank you for all
who graduate this year. You have
blessed them during their years in
school with wisdom, friendships, and
skills. You continue to challenge
them to make this world a better
place because of their education.
Help them to look forward to their next steps: continuing
in their education or entering the work world.
Give them faith and a sense of purpose in their next steps.
Show them how to serve others in effective ways.
And may they be always be aware in everything they do
that they will find fulfillment in doing your will, that you
will be with them always, and that you will being to com-
pletion the good work you have begun in them.

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595)
May 26 In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as
the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souve-
nir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a
recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics
scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, "They're a very
somber order who've left the Church. I recognize them." "By
their long robes?" an American asked. "Many in Rome wear
robes," replied the shopkeeper. "It's their long faces!" When
Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was rea-
son to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint
Peter's steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were aban-
doning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an "Apostle of
Joy," drawing especially the young to Christ--and frequent
confession and Communion--by his sincere interest in their
problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His
"Oratory," a movement as well as a place, provided recreation
and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, ser-
vice, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin
improving Church and world by changing ourselves with un-
failing joy. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Western flair for Benevolent Care Fund
Due to COVID-19 concerns, the annual Founders Day fund raiser for Be-
nevolent Care at King’s Manor Retirement Home in Hereford, Texas set for
July 18, 2020 has been canceled. This vital revenue loss spurred Wayne
Dollar of Dollar’s Spurs, a veteran 40-year spur maker, to handcraft his
1000th pair of spurs—a very special offering, using sterling silver, 14 karat
gold and rubies. He and wife, Kris, have donated the spurs to the Benevo-
lent Care Fund of King’s Manor to raise money to provide continuing care
for Manor residents who have exhausted their resources to ensure that they
continue to have a home at King’s Manor. The spurs are being raffled at a price of $100 per ticket. The drawing to
be held August 18, 2020.
The spurs have a 1 1/4 inch heel band and a 2 3/4 inch shank . The 2 1/2 inch rowel has 15 spokes. The heel bands
and shanks are completely overlaid with sterling silver. Mountings atop the silver are 14 karat gold. Eight 4mm AA
grade rubies are set in gold rosettes. Hand engraving covers the precious metals. The swings, rowels and shank tops
are also engraved. Antique browning is the finish on the exposed steel. Material costs alone in making these spurs
exceeds $2,200. Estimated retail value of this “boot jewelry” is $4,000.
A purchased ticket has a one in 200 chance of winning. Only 200 tickets are being sold.
View the spurs or purchase tickets on Facebook and make Pay Pal payments to [email protected] or see
website link kmmrs.com
Tickets may also be purchased by calling the King’s Manor office at 364-0661.
Ascension
Malcolm Guite
1957-
We saw his light break through the cloud of glory
Whilst we were rooted still in time and place
As earth became a part of Heaven’s story
And heaven opened to his human face.
We saw him go and yet we were not parted
He took us with him to the heart of things
The heart that broke for all the broken-hearted
Is whole and Heaven-centred now, and sings,
Sings in the strength that rises out of weakness,
Sings through the clouds that veil him from our sight,
Whilst we our selves become his clouds of witness
And sing the waning darkness into light,
His light in us, and ours in him concealed,
Which all creation waits to see revealed.
