St. Ann Parish Mission Statement We are called by a loving God

to make St. Ann of Lansing a Catholic community of faith. We are a family of diverse people with various ministries: healing the body and spirit, teaching of God and His love,

united in sacraments and prayer, reaching out to the extended community. With God’s revelation of Himself in Scripture as our guide,

we strive to grow in His Spirit and to fulfill the promise of Christ’s Kingdom.

Good news! The Centennial Book is almost done! Only a few finishing touches are needed, and those will be our Mass and Dinner-Dance in October. To that end, the release of the book will be delayed until around Christmas, so those special events can be in-cluded in the book. The Book Committee thanks you for your patience!

To celebrate our Parish Centennial, we are collecting small artifacts from St. Ann’s past to show in a locked display case in the Narthex. If you would like to lend a small article (no pictures or furniture) to this exhibit, please call Paul Schultz (708-895-2266) or Mike Kabala (708-525-7987). Thank you!

Today’s Readings First Reading — The word of the LORD is very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts (Deuteronomy 30:10-14). Psalm — Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live (Psalm 69) or Psalm 19. Second Reading — Christ Jesus is the image of the in-visible God (Colossians 1:15-20). Gospel — The Samaritan traveler was moved with com-passion at the sight of the man stripped and beaten by robbers (Luke 10:25-37). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Today is the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Re-sponsorial Psalm is, “Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.” (Psalm 69:14, 17, 30-31,33-34, 36, 37) The Gospel is about the Good Samaritan. Who can you be a Good Samaritan to this week? I recently saw a program on TV with Dr. Phil, and he gave his “Sweet 16” ideas of how to help guide your life.

SWEET 16 I always say, “To be Sweet 16 and know what I know now!”

―Doctor Phil

1. Define your image (commit to something) 2. Have a perception of uniqueness 3. Think “Big” 4. Accept praise 5. Become essential in all that you do 6. Know your real currency value; a financial pic-

ture is important 7. Always have a plan and a backup 8. Keep things “close to the vest” 9. Investigator mode: keep your eyes open and

your mouth shut 10. Behave your way to success 11. Keep your options open 12. Master the system 13. Have a great nucleus of support 14. Deal only with truth 15. Use other’s egos to glean knowledge 16. Pick your battles

What would “God’s Sweet 16” be in your lives? Take some time this week to sit quietly in the presence of the Lord and reflect on your life. See if you can come up with 16 items in your life per God. Serving Him Together, Barb A.

Ministry Spotlight ART & ENVIRONMENT

Art and Environment is a Liturgical Ministry charged with the important task of adorning the Church to create an atmosphere appropriate for each liturgical season. This ministry is under the direction of Brian Kozlowski and Rita Pritchett.

Members of Art & Environment donate their time and tal-ent in a variety of ways. Examples include: designing and creating new banners and Altar cloths; organizing storage containers and the storage room; coordinating volunteers for large-scale decorating projects; creating and organizing the overall decorating plan; plant care (watering, pruning, fertilizing); arranging flowers; working with materials; cleanup duties; general chores.

Art & Environment provides a wonderful opportunity for those seeking volunteer hours; in past seasons, Confirm-andi have earned many service hours working with the team. If you are interested in joining in this ministry, call the Parish Office at 895-6700.

Time to Clean Out Your Attic! St. Ann’s Parish Transformation Team will hold a rummage sale Saturday, July 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the St. Ann Parish Hall to benefit the St. Vincent DePaul Society. We are seeking donations of clothing, household items, jewelry or small furni-ture.

Rummage Sale Drop Off Dates: Wednesday, July 17, 1-3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 7-9:00 p.m. Parish Hall Door P1 (East Side)

Please do not drop off items anywhere or any time other than the Parish Hall at the above dates and times. We also need volunteers. If you are interest-ed in helping or have any questions, contact Debbie Bona at the Parish Office, 895-6700, ext. 43.

Don’t forget to write!

If you’re going to be away this sum-mer, you can place your weekly enve-lopes in the Sunday collection or leave them at the Parish Office before you go or upon your return. Just remember

that individual 50-50 envelopes need to be in before the weekly drawings if you intend to participate.

Safe travels to all of our parishioners and loved ones this summer, and please don’t forget about us!

July 13-14, 2013 Dear St. Ann Family,

I look forward to meeting and greeting parents and students this week at St. Ann School’s Registration/Fee Days on Sunday, July 14 and Wednesday, July 17. Please remember, if you can’t attend on either date, simp-ly call Mrs. Summerrise or me at 708-895-1661, and we can make an appointment that fits your schedule. I feel very blessed each time another student enrolls at St. Ann School.

Beginning Monday, I’ll be downtown for a week-long leader-ship series hosted by the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office of Catholic Education. Never fear though, I’ll be sure to make it back in time on Wednesday evening for Fee Days.

Thank you’s... Congratulations and gratitude to Barb. A. and the Religious Education Team on a very successful Vacation Bible School! 80 children attended this event! It was nice to see some of our 8th Grade Leaders of the School helping out.

If you happen to see Tom Gray, please thank him! Not only did he re-tile a classroom for us, he is graciously re-tiling the school’s main office for us. Again, we thank him for his hours and hours of labor. I would also like to thank my husband, Eric, for accompanying me to Menard’s to pick up the heavy boxes of tile and toting them back to St. Ann’s. Ah, the joys of being a Catholic School Principal’s husband!

My super summertime Maintenance Team amazes me each and every day. They continue to clean and paint classrooms, and move furniture. I continue to bring in donuts and remind them, “It’s all for our students!”

The SmartBoards are here! The Smartboards are here! Two more SmartBoards have arrived and will complement our strong instructional program at St. Ann’s. I have used a SmartBoard since 2001 and will work with teachers in design-ing lessons that go beyond the textbook. SmartBoards are interactive white boards that, paired with a computer, bring hands-on, engaging lessons to students. Think of Smartboards as learning portals.

How ‘bout those Hawks! You know how our Fr. Bill loves loves loves his Bears…well, your new principal is a BIG Blackhawks fan! Imagine my delight when the Chicago Blackhawks hoisted Lord Stan-ley at the end of June! I was also delighted to see two of our St. Ann School Alumni, Alison Fuss and Hannah Wotaszak pictured in the June 29 Sun-Times sports section (full page photograph). Alison and Hannah were at the Parade and Rally donning face paint, big smiles, and true Blackhawks spirit. I have the picture proudly displayed in my office.

Right around the corner… St. Ann Rummage Sale on July 20

God’s blessings to you and your family!

St. Ann Family,

Once again, I have been contacted by several of our Lansing Churches telling me that their services have been interrupt-ed by people asking for cash. These people go from one Church to another begging, and they have stories that would melt any heart. Some even bring their children with. They are not Lansing residents. These panhandlers have actually gone into some Churches and disturbed the services. At St. Ann’s, we have even had people begging from mourners af-ter a funeral. For four years, a family from South Chicago has brought their sons and asked our parishioners for cash after Mass. The mother tells me she wants cash or gift cards. We make appointments to meet with them to discuss what assistance we can be, but they never keep the appointments.

Because of concern about the rapid increase in PROFESSIONAL BEGGING at most Lansing Churches, we, St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Ann, along with representatives of many other Lansing Churches attended meetings to address this situation. The result is the setting up of a network to notify each other when we find someone going from Church to Church. If a Church decides to help a person who is just passing through town, they notify the other Churches that help was already given so it is not duplicated. This is all an effort to discourage the professional beggars but, of course, we are all here to help those truly in need.

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU IS, IF YOU ARE APPROACHED BY ANYONE SEEKING HELP OF ANY KIND, PLEASE GIVE THEM OUR ST. VINCENT CELL PHONE NUMBER, which can be found inside the front cover of the Sunday bulletin. There are bulletins available inside the front doors of the Church. Our cell is always on because we make ourselves available to those in need. People who really need assistance are willing to call, or you can call and tell me there is someone who needs help and I will come to Church.

PLEASE, NEVER, EVER GIVE CASH TO ANYONE! This just encourages more begging, and the money usually goes for drugs or alcohol. If the person is in need, we will assist them with food cou-pons, gas coupons or whatever we feel the situation demands. WE NEVER GIVE CASH! We also make them aware of other agencies and programs that are available to give them aid.
