From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT SEPTEMBER IS THE MONTH OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF OUR LADY!

FOOD FOR THE POOR

This weekend, Franciscan Fr. Luis Runde, O.F.M., representing the organization “Food for the Poor”, will

visit our parish and make an appeal. He will instruct us as to the nature of his organization and the need that its

trying to supply and ameliorate. I think the name of his organization pretty much tells the story. I will not be

here this weekend, so I ask you to please welcome him in the name of our parish and respond to his appeal in

your typically generous fashion.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!

The response to our appeal of funds to install a really first-rate, state-of-the-art camera and sound system for

our church (for the live-streamed broadcasts of our parish Masses) has been immediate and most generous. Be-

cause of the Covid, a lot of people have watched Mass from their homes, and from this we’ve learned how many

of our people are, independent of the Covid, incapable of attending Mass and would benefit from a decent

broadcast medium. Because of Covid, people were excluded from even the funerals of their loved ones, but we

have been able to live-stream those funerals, so that, even though they could not attend in person, they were able

to take part at home. The new (and permanent) system, will continue to be used for such things and, of course,

for the regular streaming of all our parish Masses. So, if you’d still like to contribute, please put your donation in

an envelope marked “CAMERA” and get it to us as soon as you can!

BARBECUE!

The men of the parish are back barbecuing again on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 1:00PM until after the 5:00PM

Mass. Use the order form found elsewhere in this bulletin. You can carry out or dine in (social distancing, of

course!).

QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC

Most of us have been Catholic our whole lives, some converted in youth or middle-age, but there are

those stories, usually dramatic, of people who “sneak in” at the wire, namely, the “deathbed conversion”. There

have been many over the centuries, and several have been famous. See if you can correctly match these descrip-

tions with the names of those who reached the end zone just as the final gun sounded:

1. The disgraced 19th c. playwright who, after leaving prison, found peace in the Church.

2. The brutal gangster and killer who, though born a Jew, called for a priest as he died.

3. The Nobel laureate (medicine), who was the first to describe a miraculous cure clinically while it was

happening.

4. The rugged star of many westerns and war films, whose grandson became a priest.

5. The strong, hardy actor, a playboy in his youth, but came to God at his “High Noon”.

6. The lone saint canonized by Christ Himself, a thief who literally stole heaven.

7. The figure from the “Wild West”, a Medal of Honor winner, and the husband of a girl from

Immaculate Conception Parish in Arnold.

8. The first king of the British restored monarchy, who fathered 15 children but not a single legitimate

heir to the throne, so that his Catholic brother became king after him.

9. The broadcasting giant and man of letters who gained fame with his book, Civilisation. 10. The Oscar-winning actress (for “Hud”, 1963) mother of five, and wife of Roald Dahl (of “Willy

Wonka” fame)

A) Charles II B) Arthur Flegenheimer (aka, “Dutch Schultz”) C) Wm. F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody D) Alexis Car-

rel E) Marion Morrison (aka, “John Wayne”) F) St. Dismas G) Gary Cooper H) Patricia Neal I) Oscar

Wilde J) Sir Kenneth Clark

ANSWERS: 1). I 2). B 3). D 4). E 5). G 6). F 7). C 8). A 9). J 10). H

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“The first effect of not believing in God, is

that you lose your common sense.” - Chesterton, the Great

“You can be a good Catholic and believe in

Darwinism. Biochemistry has made it increasingly

difficult, however, to be a thoughtful scientist and be-

lieve in it…The whole field of evolutionary biology is

disconnected from reality.” – evolutionary biologist Michael J. Behe “(There is a) willingness to accept scientific

claims that are against common sense (because of) a

prior commitment to materialism*. Moreover, that

materialism is absolute and cannot allow a Divine

Foot in the door.” – Harvard biochemist Richard Lewontin *”materialism” is the philosophy (promoted by Karl Marx and others) that teaches that the only things that exist are things which are palpable to the senses, leading to the belief, therefore, that there is no soul, no spiritual life and, of course, no God

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION The St. Angela Merici Respect Life Committee is asking you to partici-pate in this year’s spiritual adoption program. This is something very valuable – we can spiritually adopt

babies who are known by God to be in danger of abortion. Every day for the nine months of the baby’s development, you will pray the Spiritual Adoption Prayer, which are on the cards availa-ble in the church lobby and on the table by the lunchroom.

Prayer is a very powerful tool, especially inter-cessory prayer when you pray for the benefit of someone else. Ask that your baby’s mother is given the guidance and support needed so that she will value the life of the child within her womb. A baby’s life may be saved and a young woman may be spared the grief and guilt of an abortion all because you were willing to pray for them!

If you have any questions about this program, please call Debbie Pilla at 314-803-0759.
