Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The Season is rushing Forward!

January was highlighted by the Morgan & Friends Fight Cancer Tournament annual event. Over 400 members attended the evening gala which included both silent and live auctions and entertainment. It was a great night. The activities of the following day included a nine hold golf experience with certain participants and the attending LPGA touring pros including Morgan, Lydia Ko (#1 in the world), Paul Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Lexi Thompson (#5), Gerina Piller, Brooke Henderson (#8), Nicole Castrale, and PGA & Senior Champion Bernhard Langer. Morning play was followed by an exhibition provided by the pros, lunch for the whole St. Andrews community and an afternoon tournament.

The opening ceremony and pros golf exhibition and lunch was attended by over 475 St. Andrews members. It was a GREAT DAY for ALL!

The day also highlighted the formal “opening” of our new Fazio II golf course. The ceremony was attended by all of the pros, our members, and those folks who were instrumental in the construction of the course, including Tommy Fazio II and our own George Kervern, Director of Course & Grounds. Early reports of the course are overwhelmingly positive – it is considered more playable from the ladies, white and blue tees and yet no doubt challenging from the gold and black tees. The greens will no doubt provide interest and excitement to all!

The community received extensive positive media coverage both on television and in the press. Morning Drive was here for several hours to provide live coverage for the Golf Channel.

As I reported previously, the Club Improvement Plan (CIP) moves forward. Phase I – consisting of the golf course, practice facilities and water feature, Promenade Room, Ladies’ Card Room and Ladies’ Club restroom – is complete and was on time and within budget. Phase II/III – consisting of the Spa, Recreation Area, and Tennis and Fitness facility – is within timeline expectations and we believe with about 45% of the Plan complete, will be within budget as well. An informational meeting for the CIP has been scheduled for the membership for January 29. By the time this magazine is distributed I expect that the membership meeting called by our Board to update all information regarding the CIP will have taken place.

On the business front, as of the present date we have closed six homes and have nine home closings pending. This is similar to where we were last year at this time. Further, our prices per square foot for homes sold continue to compare very favorably with homes being sold at competing communities. In addition, through December we were ahead of our operating budget for our fiscal year.

Our shout out this month goes to Ellen Liebman, Grievance and Bridge Chair and Social Committee Co-Chair. In her short time on the Board, Ellen has sought out increasingly more responsibility and has discharged her duties with dedication and Gusto! She is a valued member of our team. Thank you Ellen.

All best,

Steve IrwinPresident, Board of Governors

Dear Members:

The recent Club Improvement Plan Informational Meeting to discuss and update everyone on the projects was well attended and many great questions were asked in reference to the projects. The content provided everyone with a transparent update to the expenses and new plans for the next phase. The Construction Committee of members that include Steve Irwin, David Ross, Jon Sherwin, Ed Rice, Paul Hauser, Mike Goldman along with Steve Greenwald, Treasurer have all dedicated a tremendous number of volunteer hours on your behalf to ensure the projects on the horizon are meeting the expectations and are within budget parameters. You should be proud of the work and talent dedicated to this undertaking on your behalf in addition to the professionals being engaged.

We are gearing up for another busy month with a variety events planned on your Club’s calendar. I hope you will make time to come and participate in many events and tournaments. Our Bridge program is as active as ever and one of the most acclaimed programs in the country. Ellen Liebman and the Bridge committee along with Bonnie Rosen have done an outstanding job in keeping our programs evolving with instruction and play that has increased each year. This year’s Ladies’ Member Guest Card Mah Jongg & Card Party was a big success due to Ellen Leibman and her committee of ladies. We have created such a positive reputation in the area, there are new members and residents joining the Club and community because of this particular activity.

Our Dining programs continue to see an increase in usage especially in the Gallery with its variety of options each day. The entire team has improved the service levels to meet our member’s satisfaction and expectations. Federica Davis and her group of managers have done a great job in training this year’s seasonal staff.

From the feedback that I’ve been hearing, the large majority of members are extremely pleased with the new Fazio II golf course. The ladies and higher handicap golfers find it more enjoyable and easier to play which was a primary goal in addition to updating the outdated irrigation and turf. The professional staff led by George Kervern has groomed the course remarkably well and it reflects a pristine manicured course.

The new Turn has become a convenience for members grabbing a snack or sandwich before, during or after golf. Our expectations of usage has more than doubled from initial projections. If you have not stopped in for a hot dog or sandwich, give it a try and enjoy the beautiful views of the practice area while dining in a relaxed, casual environment.

Please mark your calendar for a “Repartee with Rick” on Thursday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ladies Card Room. Rick Dente, AGM is looking forward to providing you with Club updates and garnering feedback to share with the professional staff.

Hope you are enjoying your Club experience at St. Andrews and let us know if you find anything we can do better for you.

Sincerely,

Craig D. Martin, C.C.M.

The Club is in full swing with many activities planned for your enjoyment. Our Social and Events Manager, Ally Applegate, has planned a full range of lectures and cultural events designed to meet a wide variety of interests. Our children’s programs are busier than ever with new members joining the Club with small to teenage children and taking part in our Kids Programs. The adult activities have something going on every week with featured speakers, book clubs, movie club to card playing and sports events. It is wonderful to see how the Club has evolved with so much for everyone to enjoy.

February is shaping up to be a continuation of a great season filled with exciting social events, family dining and entertainment. This year our Valentine’s Dinner will be held on Tuesday, February 14 in the Gallery. The evening’s entertainment will be a four-piece band from Euphoria, and Executive Chef Steve Viggiano is planning a Prix Fixe dinner menu you will fall in love with. Right after Valentine’s Day get ready for a week of poolside cookouts and family activities starting February 18 and running the entire week. Events and activities include poolside buffet every day weather permitting, along with pool side DJ and entertainment for the kids, and Seafood Dinner Buffet on the 24th. Stone crabs as everyone knows are only found in Florida which makes them a delicacy and difficult to buy. Availability permitting, we will have them on display along with Maine Lobsters, Oysters, Jumbo Shrimp, Sea Bass and a bounty of other amazing food this Seafood Buffet night so make reservations early by calling 470-6566 or email [email protected] appreciate the positive feedback from you on the various dining facilities with most comments focused on service and product. I encourage members to come and enjoy the outdoor patio area at The Grille at Lakeside and the fire pit overlooking the water is a wonderful place for dinner and cocktails. See you around the Club.

S.A.W.G.A.! The months of January and February are jammed packed with opportunities for fun, social and competitive golf. Congratulations to all the 18 and 9 hole players, but especially the winners who played in the 2017 President’s Cup! Our Country Club Challenge, St. Andrews vs. Gleneagles has been scheduled for two consecutive Tuesdays at the end of January. The “home and

Have you visited the Golf Shop to not only book a lesson, but also get your red and white clothes for “All Fore Love,” our mid -year event chaired by Terry Greenstein on February 14? This is open to all S.A.W.G.A. members: clinics, brunch, followed by nine-holes of golf. Our Play for P.I.N.K. Committee was very busy delivering invites to your mailboxes in early January. Shelley Harris and her committee are looking forward to another successful fundraising event on February 28. St. Andrews women have rallied together to sponsor tees, greens, play golf and to make sure this day incredible. S.A.W.G.A. should be so proud of the turnout and support for breast cancer research! If you are a member of S.A.W.G.A. you can be a part of the tournament field which will be sixsomes of 18 and nine holers; any woman may join us for lunch that each of us pay for so that all proceeds go to Play for P.I.N.K. Over NetTHE

As we head into the busiest portion of our season, our tennis program continues to be extremely active and enjoyable. The recent December holiday period was, by all accounts, the most crowded we have ever been at our beautiful tennis facility. From members and guests enjoying professional lessons and clinics to

increased court usage with social play, the courts were jam packed! Our Jr. Holiday Clinics had between 30 -45 kids each day and the pizza party was also a great success. Thanks to all for your continued support with our tennis program.

Our most recent event, the annual Men’s / Women’s Pro-Am, was sold out for only the second time in history. We had twenty-four members compete with and against twenty-four of the best South Florida professionals in this always popular event. The weather was perfect and everyone had a wonderful time. On the Men’s side, Russell Weisz used his aggressive baseline play to win 1st place as he edged out the always tough Finalist Gary Kiman. On the ladies draw, Champion Helen Morton used all her touch and experience to barely get by newcomer and first time participant Finalist Laura Brounstein. Thanks to all players for supporting this awesome event.

Please be sure to sign up for these terrific upcoming events in February/March: Mixed Doubles Club Championships (Saturday, February 11), Men’s Member – Guest (Friday, March 10), annual Color War event (Saturday, March 18), Ladies Member – Guest (Monday, March 27), Parent – Child Tournament (Friday, March 31).

In closing, this year’s annual professional tennis exhibition is all set with the best doubles team of all time coming to St. Andrews CC. Yes, that’s right, the Bryan Brothers will be here to compete against yours truly and the always comedic and entertaining Jimmy Arias. The event will take place on Monday, February 27. More details will follow shortly but please call or sign up in the Tennis Shop if you would like to attend this exciting match.

Hope to see you there and as always, see you on the courts!!!

Physiological skin processes are governed by chronobiology. It determines when our skin does which tasks. During the day, it’s kept very busy protecting us against environmental stress, antioxidants and other external influences. At night it regenerates us. Studies have also shown, for example, that the gene, which separates and differentiates our keratinocytes, is influenced by light. That is why actives supporting skin’s

regenerative functions are best delivered during the night via overnight masks or night-time ampoules. - Leading skin care research scientist, Andrea Weber, head of the BABOR Research and Innovation Center.I share this with members all the time and only the truest skincare guru knows and practices this. Cleansing and treating the skin before bed is critical in accomplishing our skincare goals.

NEWBabor is soon to launch 2 excellent skincare products; Reversive Overnight Mask and Daily Serum. These new products complement our Reversive Facial and are absolutely perfect for that night time beautification process. ReVerisve Overnight Mask:It’s simple. Now you can not only dream of perfect skin but also wake up with it. The REVERSIVE anti-aging overnight mask lets your beauty dreams come true. This mask contains Babor’s patented ingredient Telovitin, an active cell-protecting ingredient based on Nobel Prize-winning research, combats skin aging right at its source: in cellular activity. By protecting the telomeres, or chromosome endings, it extends the life cycle of skin cells. This product also helps to prevents glycation of collagen fibers, thus enabling the skin to remain elastic. It allows the longevity gene to reach its full potential, boosts the skin’s detox systems, fills in wrinkles and uneven skin texture with instantly visible results. With this effective combination of active ingredients, the mask makes sleep the ultimate luxury.Want to experience these products first hand? Join us for our spAtacular event in March our 25 minute youth recaptured express facial will be utilizing these new products!

Spa Tips & EtiquetteGoing to the spa is a wonderful way to reserve time that is just for you to relax and unwind. To get the best out of your visit each month we’ll provide you with a basic tip.Arrive on Time We recommend arriving 15 minutes prior to your treatment. Checking in early allows for you to shower, change, relax in the sauna / steam room or enjoy our massage chairs prior to your service. Arriving late takes away from your treatment time. Make yourself the priority, you deserve it!

The greAT gATSby MeMber gueST Card, Mahjongg, and Game PartyAfter one year of planning, this event came and went with a flourish. The elimination of the vendors, the addition of the morning Canasta tournament with continental breakfast and later the passed hors d’oeuvres, and the presentation of the two identical buffet stations proved to be positive changes. Although not everyone will agree it was obvious to the majority of members, their guests and the incredible St. Andrews staff that this event was easier to manage, and most probably this format will be repeated next year with some tweaking here and there. This event could never be successful without the many staff members who make this event happen. Planning by a committee is one thing, implementing these plans is quite another. Thank you to catering; Cory Hickman and her mentor Linda Spielmann who work with the event committee enhancing our ideas; to Ari Ajoy and staff who set up the dining room and the card rooms continually making sure that any and all issues are nipped in the bud; our talented chefs whose delicious choice of food from the hors d’oeuvres to the desserts outdid themselves; to Chef Jose whose artful ice carvings are amazing; our talented art designers making the posters, menus etc., Bonnie Rosen and Michele Zelin making sure our card rooms are supplied, and running properly; and finally to maintenance and valet. Lastly, I personally want to thank this committee, my side kicks, who plan for one year to create this happening: Co chairs Linda Anikstein and Alice Glassman; Committee members Billie Mesner, Ronnie Schneider, Linda Bodian, Shelley Harris and Mimi Leeds. Must also thank our friends who help us in the eleventh hour putting on the finishing touches. In conclusion, Save The Date: Monday, January 22, 2018

Maureen Buchbinder Nutrition Educator

EATING FOR PLEASUREWe are all programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain. It’s the most primitive part

of the human nervous system. So, when you eat, you are seeking the pleasure of food, and you are avoiding the pain of hunger. But here’s the TRICK: You can’t receive pleasure unless you are aware that you are engaging in it. So, if you’re eating food and you’re NOT PAYING attention – if you’re watching TV, talking too much, rushing or reading – you will potentially miss the experience of pleasure. And, if you do not get the pleasure you seek, the brain often interprets that missed experience of pleasure as hunger. You’ll want more food, so then you’ll be wondering: Do I have a willpower problem? But there’s no willpower problem – the problem is we are not entirely there when we eat. We’re not getting the full experience, and so we are left feeling hungry.

SO, WHAT WE THINK OF AS OVEREATING IS ACTUALLY ABOUT UNDERAPPRECIATING?

Yes, this thing we’ve called overeating is really a product of our culture, which has us moving too FAST! And the faster you go, the less your brain and digestive physiology can actually experience what’s going on with food. When it comes to properly registering both the nutrition and satisfaction inherent in the food we’re taking in, the body needs time and focus to figure out what’s going on. THAT’S HOW WE ARE WIRED!

You could be eating your favorite ice cream cone, but if you’re miserable and stressed-out and guilty while you’re eating it, you are not receiving that pleasure.

Firstly, we need TO SLOW DOWN AND NOTICE, as well as savor and receive. The only way to eat with pleasure is to notice if there’s any pleasure to be had. BE ATTENTIVE, TAKE YOUR TIME AND DELIGHT IN YOUR FOOD.
