Dear Friends,

We are growing St Andrews Christian College in multiple ways. We are doing different initiatives in each of the sections of the College, but we are also implementing programs across the whole College.

One of these programs is the Student Leadership Program (from Prep to Year 12).

Daniel Lee, a wonderful teacher in the Primary will be our Student Leadership Coordinator for St Andrews. Daniel is currently overseeing the development of our Buddy Group Program across the College.

“Leadership is a process of influence. Anytime you seek to influence the thinking, behaviour, or development of people in their personal or professional lives, you are taking on the role of a leader.” (Blanchard and Hodges)

As teachers, parents and students we are all leaders in different ways, as we intentionally and unintentionally influence others.

We need to develop our students to be the type of leaders who lead like Jesus, who said, “I came to serve not to be served.” In Matthew 20: 25-28, Jesus gave to his disciples how they were to attain and carry out roles of leadership.

But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28 Servant leadership isn’t an option, it is a mandate! An important part of being a leader is character and integrity. Leaders are called to exemplify Jesus to others and our goal is to become more like Jesus, being transformed to his image (Romans 8:29). Hebrews 13:7 tells us to “Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.” As leaders, the challenge is to follow Jesus closely, so that when others follow us and imitate us, we are leading them in the right direction. What a responsibility and what an awesome privilege we have here at St Andrews Christian College to guide and inspire our future leaders. Please pray for our students, that they become Christ-like leaders, strong enough to influence the world for Christ rather than be influenced by the world. In this newsletter are the basics of our Student Leadership Program. Blessings on your week,

Catriona

Some ex students from St Andrews are in a Christian

band called Flight Sixty. At assembly on Monday they will perform a song

and talk about what St Andrews has done for

them.

House Community Points Movie Night - Saturday 2nd June 5pm Next Saturday 2nd of June is our Family Movie Night. The movie is a Christian one called ’Courageous’ and will be screened in Rembrandts. A must see for the whole family especially dads! Unlike last year, this movie will appeal also to the secondary students. For younger children a kids movie will be shown at the same time in the music room.

“This is a wonderful film that delivers a strong message of faith and the importance of a father’s involvement in courageously leading his family. I would highly encourage all families to see this film...”

Cost for the movie is a gold coin donation at the door with the movie starting at 6:30pm sharp. A sausage sizzle and chicken wraps will be available to buy from 5pm, along with popcorn! Face painting and balloon sculpting will also be available. Annie Yew - Movie Night Coordinator

Woolworths Earn & Learn Collect your stickers as you shop at Woolworths, place them on the card given (extra cards available at the school office) and then drop them into the collection box in the school office. Last year we raised over 6,000 points which equated to valuable resources for the Library. The points raised this year will be spent on resources for the Tata school in Vanuatu.

Next PFA Meeting The next PFA meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th June at 7:30pm in the school staffroom. All parents and friends are welcome to attend.

Paving thanks Many parents would have noticed the wonderful paving as you enter the school. This is the result of some hard work by parent Michael Masciantonia. With help from other parents and as part of the money donated to the school by the PFA Michael has worked tirelessly under the guidance of Mr Remy Landman, the grounds and maintenance manager. Parents have also been busy putting the finishing touches to the planting. Thank you Michael and parents!

Mothers’ Day Stall Once again a huge thanks to Ivy Fernandez for coordinating the Mothers’ Day stall this year. The PFA have received a number of comments on the excellent quality of the gifts on sale. Thanks to parents who donated gifts and helped on the day.

Food Day The next Food Day to be held by the PFA will be on Thursday 7th June. On the menu will be toasted sandwiches with chicken or ham & cheese. Order forms will be coming home soon.

Parenting Library Books are on display in the school office and are available for 2 week loans (limit of 2 books at a time).

Primary Bookfair - Parent Helpers Required Yes . . .It's that time again! Later this term the Library will be running a bookfair in Rembrandts. We require some enthusiastic parent helpers to assist with selling books & stationery OR being a welcomer/general helper. Time can be counted as your parent assistance hours.

If you are available for 2 or more of these sessions and would like to assist, please let the library know. A diary note, an email or a visit will do. Let us know which 2 or 3 sessions suit you and we will happily sign you up!

You may even get to wear a funny hat and smile a lot! Joanne Edwards—Librarian

Advice Of Student Absences From Monday 14th May we will advise parents and guardians by SMS if a student is absent from the morning roll call, and we have not received written notification. If a phone call has been made to notify of absence you will still receive an SMS, and you can then reply to the SMS and that can be counted as the official advice for the College records.

To advise of a student’s absence, it is best to email [email protected] by 9.00am of the day the student is absent.

We ask for your patience if we encounter any ‘teething’ problems with the introduction of this new system. Darren Waterworth - Business Manager

Year 8 Interschool Soccer On 11th May, Year 8s competed in SEISS Interschool Soccer. The weather was great and we all had a fun day. The boys were challenged and pushed to their limits. They snatched 1 victory, 1 draw and finished 3rd. Some good life lessons were learnt by the boys, like learning how to work as a team which they intend to put into practice on the next interschool sport day. The girls were runners up and had lots of fun! Their team was made up of Year 8 girls & some very keen Year 7 girls. Well done to Olivia for being the star, shooting 2 goals. Mr Daniel Idrees - PE Teacher

Science Expo...coming soon St Andrews Christian College Science Expo Do you really know if your hands are clean when you have washed them? – we can show you. What will happen to you if an excess of static charge builds up on your body? – are you brave enough to find out? Have you ever seen water turn to wine? – we are able to do this miraculous feat (but we would not suggest you try to drink the result). These are just some of the things you could discover at the St Andrews Science Expo which will be an explosive afternoon of excitement and fun. Coming soon. The Science Department

Victorian Youth Prayer Breakfast Four students from St Andrews Christian College attended the Victorian Youth Prayer Breakfast last Friday. Sarah, Rebecca, Andrew, James and Mr Crotty, as well as students from over 10 other Christian schools had the opportunity to join together in fellowship and prayer.

The guest speaker, Stephanie from CMS, spoke to us about her calling to minister as a clinical psychologist to the war ravaged nations in central Asia. By the end of the breakfast, the room was filled with a sense of awe at what God is doing outside our little, safe Christian circles and an uprising of the courage that we as Christ’s workmen need to be willing to say “I will go.” James Minett Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do.”

Indoor Soccer The first ever St Andrews Indoor Soccer Tournament is in full swing in the high school. Last week, the Barton Rebels (Year 7 boys) fought hard to get to a 1-0 lead against the Parkes Leprechauns (Year 8 boys) by half-time. However, the Leprechauns recovered to win 2-1. Joshua Hooimeyer (Rebels) was best on court, while Jacob Stone came off the bench to score the equaliser in the closing stages. This week, the first senior boys game saw the Barton Bulls defeat Deakin FC 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter. Andrew Snooks starred for the Bulls. Next week, the junior girls competition kicks off with the Deakin Jellyfish taking on the Parkes Poisonous Potatoes. The excitement is building!

Prep News The Preps have been learning about different helpers in our community. We had Dr Sam Lim visit and show us what a dentist does and how to care for our teeth.

The Preps hosted their Mums for a special afternoon tea. They served their Mums some yummy food and gave them all a hand painted mug. It was beautiful to see their grateful attitudes and

the special love they have for their Mums.

Thanks Year 1 From Arcare

We just wish to thank Gail for organising the visit of the Year One students to our facility. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed watching them sing. One lady was so happy, she cried. Another resident was asking everyone for the rest of the day if they saw the children too. Our staff also enjoyed watching your students and their interaction with our residents. We also appreciated the gifts they gave our residents. Robyn Driver and Angie Harvey—Lifestyle Arcare Knox

Year 2 Health In Year Two, in Health, we have been looking at different people’s clothing. Daniel brought in his Tonia and Kelly and Florence brought in their dresses that they wear for Chinese New Year. We learnt a lot about their cultures and here is what they shared with us.

A Coptic Tonia A Tonia is worn by a Coptic deacon. It is a sign of being washed in Christ’s blood. It is worn with a red patrachil on the left shoulder as a sign of carrying the cross while the edges of the patrachil resemble the wings of the angels.

Chinese New Year Clothing At Chinese New Year we celebrate with a festival. We watch dragons dance and we eat a variety of delicious foods. At Chinese New Year the people mainly wear red and new clothing to represent a new year.

Year 2 Art Excursion On Wednesday 9th May the students from Year 2 attended an excursion to the Ian Potter National Gallery. At the gallery the students undertook a guided tour to learn more about the Contemporary Indigenous collection. It was encouraging to see the students exploring art of various forms. The students learnt about traditional techniques used by aboriginal people to make their paintings and sculptures.

Ben: We saw some Aboriginal paintings. One was of William Barak, an elder of the Wurundjeri clan.

Kelly: We saw egg trophies made out of emu and ostrich eggs; the Aboriginals painted the eggs when they had finished.

Jacqueline: We saw a painting of a big lake painted by twelve ladies.

Following the visit to the Art Gallery, we made our way to the Botanic Gardens. The children enjoyed their lunch in the surrounds of the childrens’ garden. In the afternoon the students explored the garden independently. They found the creek and pond, the look out and the bamboo tunnel exciting and stimulating surroundings in which to complete an afternoon of sketching.

Sienna: We walked to the Botanical Gardens where we went to the Childrens’ Garden. We did some sketching. Christine Andrzejewski - Primary Art Teacher

Year 4 Healesville Excursion On the 17th of May, Grade 4 went on an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. We saw emus, ibis, kangaroos, echidnas, koala, dingos, water monitors, the world’s top 10 deadliest snakes, Blue Tongue Lizard, Diamond Python, green tree frog, stick insects, lots of birds and a bird show. At the bird show, we saw a Black Kite, Yellow Crested Cockatoo, Major Mitchell, Brown Falcon and a Wedged Tail Eagle. There were lots of birds but the 2

most endangered birds in Healesville Sanctuary were the Orange-Bellied Parrot and the Helmeted Honeyeater. We also visited the Wildlife Hospital. When we entered, there was a surgery going on. It was fascinating! Facts I learned: 1. A mother kangaroo can carry 3 babies at a time. 2. Farmers like ibis because they eat pests such as insects and mice. I think this was the most exciting excursion I’ve ever had!

By Nicholas Wu 4D

On the 17th May .Year Four went on an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. The bus trip was very long. When we finally got there we went past the emu enclosure to see the kangaroos. We saw Eastern Grey kangaroos and red kangaroos. While we were having recess many Ibises came and ate the leftover food which was dropped. We later saw koalas, echidnas and very cute dingoes. The amazing bird show was next in the flight arena. Lisa then told us about endangered animals then took us to the animal hospital. By Mia Loh 4K

The bird show at Healesville Sanctuary was really cool. The birds were amazing and my favourite bird was the wedge tail eagle and the black breasted buzzard. The black breasted buzzard is interesting because it will steal other bird’s eggs and use rocks to crack open the eggs to eat. A corella named Kevin was able to talk and he was very funny. - By Taylor Wilikinson 4K

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross Country Carnival On 18th May, 56 Year 4-6 students headed to Knox Athletics track to compete against other local schools in a cross country carnival. Many of our students were competing in an interschool cross country carnival for the first time & most students were pushed to their limits. All students were victorious on the day as they finished either the 2 or 3 km courses. Many of the students had a goal just to finish their course & they were well satisfied when they conquered it!! Congratulations go to McKenzie Morris (17th) & Mark Merrigan (5th) for finishing in the top 20 out of 160 students in their respective age groups. They have qualified for the next round in cross country and will be competing in the Knox Division on the 4th June. Mr Daniel Idrees PE Teacher

Asthma, Coughs and Colds The common cold, caused by an upper respiratory tract infection, is one of the most common illnesses for children and adults in Australia. Colds are more common in winter months as people spend more time indoors, in close contact, and can be more likely to pass on viruses that cause the common cold.

Colds can be a trigger for asthma, and asthma management can become more difficult for students attending school when they have a cough or a cold. Ensure students reduce the risk of passing on coughs and colds by avoiding coughing or sneezing on, or near other people and that they wash their hands appropriately after blowing their nose or handling used tissues. Coughing or sneezing onto the inside of their elbow instead of their hands can also prevent the transmission of infections.

If students are very unwell, they should be encouraged to stay home and rest to reduce the chance of spreading infections and to give them a better chance of recovering quickly. Read more at http://www.standrews.vic.edu.au/newsletter-notices-of-interest.html
