Vol. 30, No. 8 August 2017

I want to thank the families who hosted our Listening Tour sessions: The Fosters, the Jinkersons, the Smiths, the Greenstreets, the Doyles, Marietta Martin, the McAlpines, Merlin Weber, and the Huffmans. You have been a part of all that is wonderful about St. Andrew’s—a people showing constant support for each other and having a desire to faithfully reach people for Jesus Christ.

Trying to evolve while staying the same

This observation, shared at one of our Listening Tour sessions, really hit home with me. I don’t know about you, but I see this a lot of my own life. As much as I want to try new types of food, I continually find myself going back to the same breakfast cereals and the same cans of soup. As much as I think I want to listen to today’s Pop music, I find myself searching the airwaves for 70s Classic Rock. And while I am fascinated by increasingly “smarter” automobiles, I still envision myself driving down the road in my ’65 Ford Falcon Futura – 2-Door Hardtop, 6-banger with a 3 on the Tree, and a hole in the passenger floorboard.

The simple fact is this: Who I am today has a lot to do with multiple boxes of Cheerios, hundreds of cans of Tomato Soup, jamming to the Eagles, and changing the transmission in my Falcon more times than I care to remember.

Food Pantry Need

The Food Pantry is in need of canned potatoes. Canned hominy, carrots, and spinach would also be appreciated.

I also know there is a significant part of me that transcends cereal, soup, and standard transmissions. And that is what I heard in our Listening Tour sessions...while we know that some change is necessary for life to continue, there are those things that transcend trends and fads and tastes. Thus, the search continues for ways to evolve while staying the same.

In the near future, we will begin our next faithful step in seeking ways to maintain that which is eternal while allowing room for some things to evolve. I will be working with our Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development in assembling a team of individuals who will take on the task of how we can make some beginning steps in the process of evolving while staying the same. I ask for prayers that this team will embrace our past as well as our future in helping us take that next faithful step.

$43,000. By the end

of 2017, we hope to

The goal to fund the parsonage repairs has been

Annual Charge Conference

Belgrade United Methodist

their area Back Pack Program

which provides food to students for the weekends

during the school year. The

three groups providing music

that evening will be the Book

of Ruth, Back Roads

Mountain Harmony. The

concert will be held on

Saturday, September 23rd

and starts at 6 PM. It is just 35 miles south on

Highway 21 at the old

gymnasium at Caledonia

Valley R-6 School. There’s a

flyer in the hallway outside

the church office if you’d like

more information.

Community Concert

The Gateway Regional District Mission Council made a decision to offer to pastors and laity in the district an excellent opportunity for learning this fall. In the spirit of the “re·mark·able” learning that began at Annual Conference Roger Ross, our new Director of Congregational Development, will lead us in “Meet the Good People”. Many of you recognize that connecting with our community, welcoming new people into relationship with Christ, and the ministries of your church are critical priorities. This learning opportunity will provide you with some significant resources and an opportunity to discern how you and our church can better connect with our neighbors.

This event will also serve as our annual Charge Conference. During the course of the morning, we will take 15 minutes to vote Charge Conference forms. This is a change from years past.

First, the learning session with Roger Ross will be offered on November 4, 2017 at Centenary UMC in Bonne Terre. (Address is 20 Park Avenue | Bonne Terre, Missouri)

The learning event will begin with arrival fellowship and coffee from 9:00-9:30 AM. The learning event itself will begin at 9:30 AM and end at 12:00 PM.

Because this event serves as both a significant learning opportunity and the annual vote of Charge Conference forms, the conference has set an expectation for attendance for St. Andrew’s of at least 8-10 people.

If you are interested in attending, please contact the church office.

Eclipse: We’ll have the parking lot open for anyone who wishes to view the solar eclipse on August 21st.

We’ve had calls from travelers as far as Texas! We are not taking reservations or charging a fee. You can

come for an impromptu gathering of musicians from 10-11:30 that morning, and we’ll have the building open

for anyone who needs to get cool, use the restrooms, or get a drink.

Giving Opportunity

Pony Bird is a local organization that the church

supports. Right now, they

are in need of consumable

items like toothbrushes

and toothpaste. Any items

like that can be left in the

Pony Bird box outside the

kitchen door.
