Dear Family of St. Andrew’s the Apostle, It’s with great joy that I am about to be ordained a priest of Jesus Christ. Myself and 6 of my
classmates (including Dcn. Jesus Oliveros, your future parochial vicar) will be receiving this sacrament on May 26th at St. Raymond’s Cathedral through prayer and the imposition of hands by Bishop Conlon. This day comes after 6 years of preparation in seminary, 12 semesters of coursework in philosophy and theology, several ministry internships in different parishes around the diocese (including time as a hospital chaplain), somewhere around 18 spiritual retreats, and many hours of prayer. Of course, It has been great to be with you at St. Andrew’s this past year, and I’ve grown a lot through the opportunity to serve here as a deacon. Thanks for such a warm welcome and such great support! I am sad to be leaving here after May 20th, but at the same time I’m excited to be ordained a priest and to be sent to St. John Paul II Catholic Church in Kankakee,
IL. Here is a short reflection on what it means to be a priest: A Catholic priest is a man set apart for the spiritual and pastoral edification of the People of God. Jesus called the first Apostles and empowered them with the Holy Spirit and the sacred mysteries, the Sacraments, so to share his grace with them and to enable them to be ministers in his name, in his very person. At the end of the Gospels, we hear Jesus send those same apostles out to be his witnesses to all nations, to make disciples, and to teach the faith (see Mt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16;
Lk. 24:46-49; Jn. 20:21-22; Acts 1:8). As the ministry grew, the Apostles (now called bishops) shared this sacred duty with priests and deacons. A priest is thus graced with the ability to forgive sins and offer the Eucharist as an alter Christus, “another Christ”. When you hear the words “This is my body…” or “I absolve you…” you are hearing Jesus speak these powerful words through his priest. What a profound and humbling mystery this is!
Please pray for the 7 of us as we are soon ordained and are also “sent out” to share in the service of
Christ and the Gospel. We are full of anticipation for the big day and hope to be holy men for God and for the Church. Of course, you are welcome to come and celebrate with me and my family when I have my first Mass! It will be May 27th at 12:30pm at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Naperville since that’s where I grew up and attended Mass as a child. I also look forward to coming back to St. Andrew’s and celebrating Mass with you here! The date for that Mass is yet to be determined – Thanks again for everything! I will miss you!
Yours in Christ,
Dcn. John Horan

The Most Important Person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre
Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral— a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection
of her baby’s body...The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in
God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this
act of creation….What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this:
to be a mother?
— Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty
When Our Phone Rings, Will You Answer It?
Somewhere in the world, a lost soul is dialing our toll-free number hoping to find help. Will you answer that call? If God is calling you to help others, consider becoming a phone counselor for The Upper Room Crisis Hotline. We are a Catholic hotline providing counseling and referral assistance to anyone struggling to find his or her way back to God or a more rational life. We help everyone regardless of their faith or background. To be a phone counselor, you don’t need experience in mental health or phone work, although that background is helpful. What you will need is a love of people and a strong desire to help the lonely, frightened, and confused. We provide all the training. If this ministry touches your heart, please call Sr. Mary Frances Seeley at 815-258-9019, or email [email protected] with questions. Our next training session begins in June. You can also check us out at catholichotline.org.
Thank you and God bless.

God has been so good and faithful. I have seen His love pour throughout the Faith Formation program. It has been such a blessing to see how much the program has grown and developed through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Over the last few months I have been seeking very intently the will of God. Through much thought, prayer and spiritual direction—I would like to share that I will be stepping back from my position as Coordinator of Family Faith Formation and returning to school to receive my Masters in Divinity and Pastoral Counseling. These past three years of working with the families have given me such an appreciation for family life and the many ups and downs of life.
In prayer I kept asking the Lord “Is this the right time?” and “Are you sure, right now?” and He would just respond with a simple – Trust.
I will be finishing the year with First Communion and Totus Tuus and plan to return to help with Confirmation. Otherwise, my last day will be June 30th, 2018.
It has been such a blessing to be with some pretty amazing people, co-workers, boss (Fr. Gregor and Jesus of course), families and catechists. To see the work of God at hand—I will truly miss this community but know that I hold it near and dear to my heart. St. Andrews is a special place and the Lord has some pretty amazing plans in store. Know of my continued prayers and I ask you do the same for me.
Your sister in Christ, Elena Ibarra
Greetings St. Andrew the Apostle family!
My name is Annmarie Ott and I am very excited to say that I will be joining the parish ministry team on July 1st as the Director of Family Faith Formation and Youth Ministry. It is with great joy that I accept these responsibilities. I have been around St. Andrew for over 18 years as the daughter of Don and Marianne Ott and already feel like a welcome ‘family’ member. I come to serve in this role with a background in Catholic Education and Youth Ministry, having worked for St. Agnes Catholic Church in Key Biscayne, Florida for 10 years.
Sharing our Catholic faith, igniting a desire to live as His disciples, is what God created me to do and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

St. Andrew the Apostle We Care Food Pantry
The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.
Our pantry is open only to Romeoville residents so proof of residency and an ID must be shown upon sign-in each week. If you are a parishioner of St. Andrew and you find yourself in need of food assistance, you are more than welcome to come to the We Care Food Pantry also. Proof of residency is a utility bill with your name and address on it plus your Driver’s License or State of Illinois ID. That must be brought in each time you come for food assistance.
The Pantry is located at 219 Arlington. For further information, please contact Shirley Grzenia at (630) 945-1317. This is the new phone number to call for food pantry inquiries and assistance. Thank you and God Bless. Crisis Pregnancy Waterleaf 1-888-4-HOPE-4-1 Birthright 1-800-550-4900
