THIS WEEK

Look at the night sky; don’t pitch a tent. So many stars! Too many to count. That is the un-numberable number of Abram’s descendants – of which each of us is a part. God promised then, and promises still today in covenantal love and mercy to care for us, protect us, and be our only God. This Lent,

let us go looking for descendant stars, people born of Abraham and Sarah and loved by God. Let us go looking for those who need embracing. Let us go looking for those who need some special care, some covenantal kindness, many kind words. Let us look. Then let us act.

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! What do you love? … This is such an important question, because we inevitably become that which we love! Prayer is opening our hearts to God’s love for us, and responding to His love for us by loving Him in return. This is so crucial! It is crucial for everyday life, to feel God’s connection to us in prayer, and to respond to His love by our love. This is the real and true love that transforms our daily living and our “daily grind.” The point of Transfiguration is important, as Fr. Anthony Giamborne, O.P. says: “These heavy bodies we bear, which weigh down our minds and pull our thoughts to earthly things, this stuff will be transformed and transfused with heavenly light.” We glimpse all this in prayer. But what is prayer?

St. Therese of Lisieux beautifully describes prayer in this way: “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” Prayer is God's gift, first and foremost. Before God, we are all beggars, beggars who are created and loved by God! Out of a humble and contrite heart, we raise our minds and hearts to God and also request good things from God.

As it happened to Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor, it so readily can happen to us: Jesus prays and we so easily fall asleep — how often our heavy bodies have heavy minds, heavy hearts, and eventually heavy eyes, ready for sleep! Yes, we are so easily pulled down, pulled away, distracted from prayer in our hearts. Only when we humbly acknowledge that we do not know how to pray as we ought, are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. According to Scripture (cited more than a thousand times!), it is the heart that prays. If our heart is far from God, the words of prayer are in vain.

In prayer we realize how passionately God thirsts for us, He desires we have an encounter with him. Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours – God thirsts that we may thirst for him. We may forget God, ignore God, hide from God, abandon God, run after false gods – yet in prayer, the faithful God’s initiative of love always comes first.

Jesus reveals that prayer is communion: communion with God, encompassing those who have gone before us, like Moses and Elijah, and listening to God’s voice from the cloud say “This is my beloved, chosen Son; listen to him.” In the New and Eternal Covenant in Jesus, prayer is the living relationship of the children of God with their Father who is good beyond measure, with his Son Jesus Christ and with the Holy Spirit. Thus, the life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice-holy God and in communion with him. This communion of life is always possible because, through Baptism, we have already been united with Christ. Baptism begins the lifting up of the heavy bodies we bear, so that even after losing through his sin his likeness to God, man remains an image of his Creator, and retains the desire for the one who calls him into existence. All religions bear witness to every human being’s essential search for God.

Traditionally, Jesus was transfigured in prayer some 40 days before His crucifixion. He was pointing to our human life beyond the imminent death He was about to endure. During this season of Lent may we learn to bear the death of Jesus in our bodies by humbly lowering ourselves to walk the dusty road of life in a constant attitude of prayer from the heart. Only then are we promised a share in his glorification.

The Mysteries of the Rosary, especially the Luminous as well as the Sorrowful Mysteries, reveal to us that precisely our sharing in the sufferings of Jesus of itself evokes a transformation to a new sensitivity in our souls to the ways of God who demands justice and mercy on the face of the earth. In prayer, the longer we look upon the Transfigured life of Jesus, the closer we are, as theologian John McGuckin says, to a growing and irrepressible certainty that we too “shall day by day grow into the Image of the Lord. We inevitably become that which we love; and that which we love ensures it.” What do you love? Our Transformation begins and continues, everyday, with a simple lifting up of our hearts to God in prayer. May that Transformation of our lives continue through prayer and communion with the sufferings and death of Jesus in our bodies to the new life of Jesus transfigured within us! We love you, Jesus, and your Body, the whole Church! Let us grow day by day into an image of YOU!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

MUSICAL MASS SETTING FOR LENT

As the Liturgical season changed from Ordinary Time to Lent, so our musical Mass settings have changed. We are now singing a Mass we have done before, Storrington Mass by Marty Haugen. Mr. Haugen was commissioned by the Catholic Parish of Our Lady of England in Storrington to compose a new Mass. This music is versatile and is more subdued for Lent.

Please enjoy reading the following excerpt from The Second Vatican Council, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, no. 7: “Whether it is used for proclamation or prayer, music joined to the Word of God is meant to draw people into an encounter with the living Word of God, who is Christ. In the Liturgy, the presence of Christ is revealed in many ways – in the person of the ordained minister, in the proclamation of God’s Word, in the Eucharistic species, and lastly when the Church prays and sings. Music is a gift of God that opens for us a glimpse of God’s glory.”

From Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship: “A cry from deep within our being, music is a way for God to lead us to the realm of higher things.”

I pray that you fully participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by praying, listening, partaking, and singing. As Pope Benedict XVI noted during his visit to France in 2008,

“…for prayer that issues from the word of God, speech is not enough: music is required!”

Our PK-4th grade students celebrated 100 days of school on January 29 by wearing 100 items. The creativ-ity was amazing from 100 Legos to 100 beads to 100 written words.

February is Nation Dental month. PK-2nd graders heard about proper care of their teeth from Dorothy and Ledie of Grove Dental in Boling-brook. The children got to show how to brush teeth properly with puppets.

Congratulations to 8th grader, Katie Nguyen, took a Placement Exam at Joliet Catholic Academy last January and is awarded a scholarship for her freshman year. Dr. Jeffrey Budz, President/Principal of JCA, wrote: "On behalf of the entire Joliet Catholic Academy family, I would like to congratulate Katie on earning a JCA Franciscan Carmelite Top Scorer Scholarship based on her outstanding performance on our January 9, 2016 Placement Test!... The scholarship is our way of recognizing her outstanding achievement." Congratulations, Katie!

During our Catholic Schools week, our service project is to provide soup for the We Care Food Pantry. The third annual “Souper Bowl” was held between the Students and the

Staff. Each group was to bring in as much soup as possible, and the group that brought in the most soup would earn a reward. The students brought in 565 cans of soup while the staff brought in 516 cans of soup for a total of 1081 soups for the We Care pantry. The referees were Fr. Gregor and Fr. Belmonte as shown on our football field bulletin board in the administration wing. Students received No Homework on Tuesday. Thank you to all those students and staff who participated.

Catholic Schools Week Open House was a huge success. 7th and 8th graders gave tours along with some of the board members. Presentations were given in English and Spanish. We had 18 total families express interest in St. Andrew

School mostly in the Preschool and Kindergarten and a few in the middle school. For those who are interested, and feel they cannot afford it, please know that financial aid is available between the Catholic Education Foundation and St. Andrew School Scholarships.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Richard J. Preisler

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
