    Theological Questions

Last week’s question: What does it mean to “make a vis-it” to the Blessed Sacrament? Although God, who made heaven and earth, is everywhere, and we can pray to him everywhere and at all times, there is a special meaning and significance to praying in a church or chapel which is set apart as a place of prayer especially when the Blessed Sacrament is kept reserved in the Tabernacle. We refer to the Eucharist as the “Real Presence” of Jesus. We believe that Jesus is really and truly present the Holy Eucha-rist: His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity are actually present under the appearances of bread and wine. It is a pious and holy practice to go to the church, even at times when Mass is not being celebrated, to “visit” the Blessed Sacrament and to adore Jesus, who is present in the Tabernacle. A visit may be for just a few moments, or it may be for an extended period of time, such as an hour, depending on our circumstances. Most Catholic churches remain open for many hours every day, so that people can stop in and pray. St. Andrew’s is usually open from 5:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Church encourages the practice of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who visit the Most Blessed Sacrament to adore it: a plenary indulgence is granted, if the visit lasts for at least one-half hour. St. John Vianney, the holy Cure’ of Ars, knew a man in his parish who would visit the church for a long time every day, and he asked the man, “What do you say to our Lord?” The man simply said, “I look at Him, and He looks at me.” New Question: What is the difference between a sin and a vice? See next week’s bulletin for the answer. To donate altar flowers in

memory of a loved one, please contact the Parish Office at 703-817-1770.

    Marriage, Adoption and Modern-Day Mayhem:

August 8 Join Divine Mercy Care to hear pro-life spokesman Ryan Bomberger, who was conceived in rape, and his wife Beth-any discuss creating a life-affirming culture through marriage and adoption. Promoting happy marriages and redemptive adoption stories creates strong, happy families that can serve as lights in the dark and confused culture. It's up to us to show that in the midst of modern-day may-hem, there's another way to live that brings beauty, whole-ness, healing, and redemption.
