“Seek the Lord while he may be found, call him while he is near,” Isaiah counsels us in the first words from today’s first reading. We come together today to seek the Lord in word and sacra-ment, knowing that he can be found in scripture, in the Eucharist, and in each other. We call to him now, lifting our voices in song and prayer, aware of his closeness as we are gathered two or more in his name.

Q. My fiancée and I were hoping to be married outdoors in a park. When we talked to our priest about the ceremony, he informed us that in this diocese, all Catholic weddings are to take place in a Catholic church. Why is that? A. It is true that Catholic weddings always take

place in a church, unless specific permission is

granted by the bishop for the ceremony to be

performed in another sacred place. First of all,

there is a purely practical reason. It is a way of

recording when and where Catholics marry.

Parish records serve a useful purpose in both civil and Church matters.

But a more important reason is that mar-

riage, in the eyes of Catholics, is a sacrament– one

of the seven sacred signs through which God com-

municates His love to us. When Catholics marry, they believe that God ratifies their union. The love

of the couple for each other is a sign of God’s love

for each of them. This is expressed during the

wedding ceremony with the words: “What God has

joined together, let no one put asunder.” The un-

ion of the couple themselves is also a continuous sign of Christ’s love for the Church. So when Cath-

olics marry, they do not look upon it simply as a

contract that a man and woman make between

themselves. Rather, they see it as something in

which God is deeply involved, and which also in-volves the whole Christian community.

The church building, which contains the

presence of Christ himself, is thought of as the

most sacred place to make this most sacred of

commitments.

When I was “one and twenty,” a very long time ago, I was a seminarian naive to many ways of the world. On vacation at home one morning, my beloved Dad asked me questions about the very parable we hear this weekend. For background purposes, let me tell you that my Dad was a strong union man, and thought that was the workers’ only protection against unfair management practices. So how do I reconcile the Lord Jesus telling a story about what looks like a contradiction of justice?

I cannot remember my answer to Dad at the time. I’m sure I struggled to defend Jesus’ decision. Admittedly, no seminary Scripture class in my time ever covered every verse in Scripture, much less this selection. It was only years later that I learned what Jesus was all about in telling this parable. It was to teach us about the remarkable generosity of God. It was the very same lesson that Isaiah had taught centuries be-fore. God’s ways are not ours. So it is futile to “frame” the picture painted by the parable with our modern labor laws, rights and practices. We then would miss the Lord’s point.

In our time, overshadowed as it is by an enemy named Covid 19, we have been made aware of many people’s generosity. They keep our cynicism in check. Health care workers, emergency responders; the transit workers; grocery store employees; and all the good police personnel bravely keep us safe.

But none of that goodness can match the generosity that our good and loving God offers us. His grace is the ultimate motivation of all those good people, and many others.

There is a much older “virus” plaguing our lives called “sin.” Yet He tells us still that one act of genuine sor-row and repentance turns back His just cause for eter-nal punishment, and realigns our spirit with His. Such is His boundless generosity! We are far from it. Sadly many of us have a twisted attitude toward giving, es-pecially forgiving.

Once upon a time, a little girl was given two dollars by her father. He told her that she could do anything she wanted with one and that the other was to be given to God on Sunday at church. The girl nodded in agree-ment and asked if she could go to the candy store. With visions of all that she could buy with her dollar, she happily skipped toward the store, holding tightly to the two dollars in her hand. As she was skipping along, she tripped and fell and the wind blew one of the dollars into a storm drain at the curb. Picking her-self up, the little girl looked at the dollar still in her hand and then at the storm drain and said, “Well. Lord, there goes your dollar.” ~Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson~

The candles in front of the picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at the front of the church beside the pulpit can be purchased as memorials. The cost is

$15.00 per candle and two are needed, therefore, the price is $30.00 for two weeks. Memorialized names will

be in the weekly bulletin and announcements.

St. Theresa and St. Joseph Memorial Candles

Annual Memorial Candles are available for your personal intentions. The candle will be lit for

one year at a cost of $100.00. If you are interested in any of these candles, please stop

by the church office after the Mass and we would be happy to order a plaque for you.

RCIA is the process by which persons who were never baptized or were baptized in another Christian tradition, become full members of the Catholic Church. Classes are open to everyone seeking spir-itual growth and a deeper knowledge and under-standing of our Catholic Faith and true discipleship. Classes began on Thursday, October 1st at 6:30PM in classroom C. To register or for more information please call the church office and leave your name and contact number.

Sunday CCD Classes Begin October 11th 9-10:15am for Grades 2 & 7.

9:00am-10:00am Grade 1 (First grade will be released outside.)

Grades 3,4 & 5 will be homeschooled and will meet occasionally outside.
