A LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Pope Francis concludes his Lenten Message this year with a chal-lenge for you and me: “…to become what Christ asks His disci-ples to be: the salt of the earth and the light of the world” (cf. Mt. 5:13-14). Lent is always a graced time for reflection on our growth in discipleship. The Holy Father urges us to fix our eyes on the Paschal Mystery and be converted to an open and sincere dialogue with Jesus as the means to zealous discipleship. This is an especially urgent call given the troubled times in which we live. At the Chrism Mass back in 2014, the Diocese set out to do precisely this. We fixed our eyes on the Church of the North Country and presented a Pastoral Vision that is Christ-led, Christ-fed and Hope-filled. Our Envisioning Process helped us establish Diocesan Priorities and Goals. Now, six years later, with 20/20 Pastoral Vision, we continue to keep our eyes and hearts focused on: following Jesus as disciples in mission; nourishing our lives through the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist; and instilling hope for the future through pastoral planning. For generations, the Church has taught the value of fasting, alms-giving and prayer in helping us be the salt of the earth and the light for the world. They are important means for us to stay fo-cused on our Diocesan Priorities of: Creating a Culture of Voca-tions, Strengthening Faith Formation in Family Life and Building Parishes with Living Stones. As we begin this Holy Season of Lent, we persevere in our mis-sion as local Church to be passionate disciples of Jesus Christ. I encourage you to continue to be active participants in the faith life of your parish. Be a source of loving support for your priests. My prayer is that these next forty days, as disciples in mission, we might pray fervently for peace in our world and for healing and the purification of our Church. We pray for the courage and hu-mility to be the salt of the earth and light of the world. May our prayer “penetrate deep within us and chip away at our hardness of heart in order to convert us ever more fully to God and His will.” Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

From Fr. Steve…..

So how are my shingles? I get this question all the time so let me answer it for all of you. I came down with shingles on my right chest under my right arm to the middle of my back on the 17th of October. I was told by the medical peo-ple that I had a very severe case after three rounds of antivi-ral medication. Yes, I have had the shingles shot about two years ago because I remembered I didn’t have to pay for it as I was 65, which at the time made me happy. However, I have been told that was the old shot and the new one with a follow up is better. Because I still have a good deal of pain, I have been told that after the external symptoms disappear the residual pain can continue for anywhere from 6-months to a year or longer. At this point, I am hoping for the 6-month sentence!!! I want to thank everyone who has prayed for my recovery. I am somewhat better as long as I don’t do much, which I find very annoying because I have many things to do This weeks story is: God is talking to one of his angels. “He said, Boy, I just created a 24-hour period of alternating light and darkness on Earth.” The angel replied, “What are you going to do now?” God said, “Call it a day”.

A rule of thumb for preachers: If after ten minutes you haven’t struck oil, stop boring!

IHC MYSTERY PLAYERS

Lent calls to mind many ancient traditions in the Catholic Church, one being the Stations of the Cross. The Immaculate Heart Central High School Mys-

tery Players from Watertown, NY, present, in a very creative way, the centuries old stations. Meditation and contemplation on the death and resurrection of Jesus is the central mystery in the prayer of the Catholic Church. The Mystery Plays of the Middle Ages focused on the presentation of this central mystery. Con-nected to ancient Mystery Plays, the IHC Mystery Players bring the stations to the modern level through the use of special light-ing, music, pantomime, and paraliturgical readings. Using the sanctuary of the church as a stage, the Paschal Mystery is recreat-ed in a moving, dramatic presentation. This group has performed extensively throughout New York State, and they will be per-forming in our parish on Saturday, March 7th at 7:30pm at Notre Dame Church. We strongly encourage everyone to attend this unique and powerful prayer experience.

ANDRÉ’S BROTHERS - ALL MEN WELCOME

We are watching Bishop Robert Barron’s “Catholicism: The Pivotal Players”, a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints who shaped the life of the Church. The meetings begin with Vespers at 6:30PM in Notre Dame Church, followed by the video and discussion. Please join us for any or all the ses-sions.
