Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . On this first Sunday of Lent we hear the familiar Gospel of Jesus being “driven” into the desert by the

Spirit to be tempted by Satan. At first, this strikes us as very incongruent. Why would the Spirit who just came to Jesus at His baptism, reinforcing the voice from heaven declaring Jesus to be God’s Son, drive Him into the desert to face head-on the prince of evil – Satan? Well, the same Spirit drives us into our own deserts during Lent to rediscover God in our lives. Lent calls us to our own interior deserts, to that place within us where we can turn off the noise and shut out the fears and tensions of our lives to realize God’s offer of grace to us. It is only in this stillness that we can begin to realize the many signs of God’s love in our everyday lives. This love can be difficult to see in all the distractions demanding our attention, and hard to hear in all the noise screaming at us. These distractions actually prevent us from experiencing the gift of who God is for us and who we are as God’s beloved sons and daughters.

At His baptism, Jesus was designated as the Beloved of God. He was given an identity unlike that of

anyone else. To fully accept His call and mission as the Beloved, He needed to fathom what exactly His true identity was. Satan challenged His understanding and acceptance of His deepest sense of self. As Mark tells us, Jesus was in the midst of the beasts. We all have faced different beasts in our own lives: anger, jealousy, pride, envy, hate, etc. These beasts draw us away from the core of who we are as the beloved of God. The beasts try to convince us that we are called to be someone other than who we really are. In his book, Perfectly Yourself, Matthew Kelly is saying something along the same lines. We don’t discover our truest nature and identity without God. God is constantly drawing us to an acceptance of our truest self, the self that God fully embraces and loves. Until we allow God to reveal this “self” to us, we are left to the mercy of all the pressures, demands, and distractions of the world around us.

Lent is a graced time to see ourselves more clearly and to accept ourselves as God does. By our

baptism we are made holy. That is a given. But what does true holiness look like? We look to Jesus for that answer. It happens when, with God’s grace, we learn that many of our attitudes and behaviors mire us in selfishness, unhappiness, and disappointment. The Spirit calls us to the work of reconciliation, justice, generosity, and love. “Satan” turns us away from God by enticing us to believe in a false self created by the world around us, and not our true self as created by God.

I encourage you to take the time to pray this Lent, eager to hear God’s invitation to know yourself as

God does. This is where real freedom is found. Besides our prayer time, use some of the many tools being offered through Dynamic Catholic and Formed.org. Take the time to attend the parish mission, and for the ladies, Spa for the Spirit. Each of these offerings can be a stepping stone to a deeper sense and awareness of the inner life of the Spirit within you.

Also, this weekend, we are having a mini-ministry fair. At this fair we are focusing on only liturgical

ministries: lectors, eucharistic ministers, ushers, choir, greeters, and servers. At Mass we are all ministers, sharing in the priesthood of Jesus the High Priest. We are not observers. We are not at Mass to watch others perform. All of us celebrate together. We contribute to the impact of the Mass by our own giving of self through prayer, song, and our interior disposition. Perhaps during this lent you will see yourself taking on a more active role ministering to the rest of us through one of the ministries listed above. As I already mentioned, each of us celebrates the Mass along with Christ. Maybe Christ is inviting you to serve Him in a fuller way at liturgy.

parishioners for supporting our mission at St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish.

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”

Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special

collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was

selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and

deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love

with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese.

Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the

gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and

generous response.

“I encourage all the faithful to share the Lenten Campaigns promoted by many Church…favor the culture of encounter in our one human family. Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and poor.” -Pope Francis The fate of nearly 1.8 million Dreamers remains uncertain as Con-

gress has yet to reach a bipartisan deal to protect these youth. Unfortunately, every day that passes without a solution is a day

where DACA youth fall out of status and lose their ability to go to school, serve in the military, and work legally.

ACTION: As we begin the Lenten Journey this month, we ask you to join us in prayer, fasting and action by urging your lawmakers to

work together for an immediate solution for Dreamers. Visit the USCCB website: www.JusticeforImmigrants.org.

St. Alphonsus and St. Thomas Becket Present: 2018 Lenten Mission

March 4, 5, 6 ♦ 7:00pm - 8:30pm St. Alphonsus Liguori Church

Facilitated by Dr. Mary Amore

Join us for three spiritually uplifting evenings.

Sunday, March 4: “Responding to God ”

As a young Jewish girl, Mary found the grace and courage to say yes to the Lord when asked her to be the mother of Jesus. Each day we, too, are presented with opportunities to say yes to God,

how do we respond? In this session, we will explore how the life of our Mary inspires us to offer our fiat to the Lord.

Monday, March 5: “Living with Steadfast Faith”

As the mother of Jesus, Mary’s life was not easy. In this presentation, we will explore the ways that the life of our Blessed Mother challenges us to live each day with unfailing faith in God.

Tuesday, March 6: “Finding Hope in the Darkness”

Mary’s life took her from the cradle to the cross. In this session we will discuss how our Blessed Mother’s life invites us to carry our crosses with hope and trust in the workings of the Lord.

Dr. Mary Amore holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union. Dr. Amore is the author of Primary Symbols of Worship and the Call to Participation and the newly released DVD entitled Eucharist: A Journey to Transformation, Healing and Discipleship. A Cardinal Bernardin Scholar and distinguished member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, Mary is a highly sought after presenter of parish missions in the area of the Eucharist and Pope Francis Year of Mercy, plus workshops, seminars and retreats. A monthly columnist at Ministry and Liturgy Magazine, Dr. Amore also serves as the full time Executive Director of Mayslake Ministries in Downers Grove, Il. Mary is a wife, mother and grandmother!

Hospitality to follow each night’s presentation, including a “Meet and Greet” with Dr. Amore!

It provides a greater awareness of the motherly help & protection that Mary offers mankind through her powerful intercession. TESTIMONIAL: “12 yrs of Catholic Education, and I learned things I had never heard before. I highly recommend the book for all…. I believe God has called me to this for a reason.” READ/BOOK: FATIMA FOR TODAY ( By Father Apostoli) ABOUT: Though the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima took place almost a hundred years ago, Our Lady's call to prayer and penance for the salvation of souls and peace in the world is as relevant now as when first delivered to three Portuguese peasant children in 1917. Because of the prophetic nature of her messages, Our Lady of Fatima has been the subject of much controversy and speculation. In this book, Father Apostoli carefully analyzes the events that took place in Fatima and clears up lingering questions and doubts about their meaning. TESTIMONIAL: “1- IF YOU READ ONE FATIMA BOOK... 2017 was an auspicious year as we celebrated the Centenary. What better time to read Father's book. 2- I participated in a book study with fellow parishioners reading a few chapters per week and getting together to discuss. Loved, loved, loved it. Wish I had known the wonders of Fatima at a much younger age.” LISTEN/Audio: OUR LADY OF FATIMA, Truth to Inspire Series (for CHILDREN – 30 Minutes) ABOUT: The three shepherds: Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco went through many trials in 1917 once Our Lady of Fatima graced them with heavenly visits and secrets. What would the children do once they were kidnapped and faced death threats? Listen and find out! This audio includes a bonus track of the Tremblay sisters singing: “Be Thou my Vision.”

*Facilitator, Sister Joyce Shanabarger, OSF—Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart

Jesus’ journey on this earth is a mirror for our own life journey. Join other holy women to reflect, pray and ritualize the journey we share with Jesus and one another. Watch our common experiences bring the questions of life together. Using the story of Jesus and the rituals of our faith tradition, we will explore the life lessons contained in the sacred mysteries. Give your spirit the opportunity to pause, to refresh and to focus. Let the

events and mysteries of our Lenten journey touch your heart once more.

*Currently serving as general community leader of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Frankfort, Illinois, Sister Joyce Shanabarger, OSF is an alum of the College of St. Francis, Joliet. She earned a MS in Educational Administration from Purdue University and a MA in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University.

An elementary school principal and pastoral minister, previously, Sister Joyce does spiritual direction along with her administrative duties. She enjoys sharing spiritually with those on the margins of society, believing strongly in the personal dignity of each person.

Enjoying nature, visiting interesting sites, cooking, reading and being with friends are some of her favorite activities.
