WE TAKE THE GIFT OF THE LIFE FOR GRANTED A teacher asked her students, “Which is more important—the sun or the moon?” “The moon!” said little Mary. “Why do you say that?” asked the teacher. “Well,” said Mary, “the moon gives us light at night when we really need it, while the sun gives light during the day, when we really don’t need it.”

After thinking about Mary’s response for a minute, you realize that her attitude toward the sun mirrors our attitude toward God. Mary took daylight for granted, forgetting that it came from the sun. In a similar way, we take the gift of life for granted, forgetting that it comes from God.

JUST FOR TODAY I will do something

positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker,

I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat

healthfully—if only just for today.

And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it’s only around the block.

AUGUST 3rd , THE SECOND COLLECTION IS FOR THE

SEMINARIANS

The education of young men for the priesthood is expensive. Every year the Archbishop appeals to our generosity to help and support the seminarians. Please be generous in the Second Collection this Sunday August 3rd. At the entrance of the church you can find special envelopes for this collection.

THE PRIEST

Is not an angel sent from heaven. He is a man chosen from among the people,

a member of the Church, a Christian.

Remaining man and Christian, He begins to speak to you

The Word of God.

This Word is not his own. No. He comes to you because God has sent him

to proclaim God's Word.

Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself.

Perhaps he adulterates it. But he believes.

And despite his fears, He knows that he must communicate

God's Word to you.

For must not someone of us say something about God,

about eternal life, about the majesty of Grace

in our sanctified being? Must not someone of us speak of sin,

judgment, and the Mercy of God?

So, my dear friends, Pray for him, carry him,

so that he might be able to sustain others by bringing to them

The mystery of God's Love Revealed in Christ Jesus.

-Karl Rahner

I want to be the voice of the dumb, the hands of the disabled people,

the eyes of the blind, I want to preach his word,

and help others I want to be a PRIEST...

HUMOR CORNER WHAT DOES LOVE MEAN?

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?"

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." – Rebecca - age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." -- Billy - age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." -- Karl - age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." -- Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." -- Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." -- Danny - age 7

Sunday’s Message Matthew 14: 13 - 21

SEMINARY BURSE FUND OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MIAMI

August 3, 2014

Dear Friends in Christ,

With great joy and appreciation I give thanks to God for your prayers and support of the Seminary Burse Fund of the Archdiocese of Miami. Today I invite you to continue your financial support,

which directly provides for the formation of those whom God is calling to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis invited us to join him in praying for our seminaries, including St. John Vianney College Seminary, located right here in the Archdiocese of Miami. The Holy Father urged us to pray that our seminaries “may form pastors after the Heart of Christ, fully dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel."

Let us continue to pray as well for those who have been ordained, and also for those in the seminary, who will one day be the priests who will guide you to the Kingdom of God. Pray for me, as once I was a seminarian, priest, auxiliary bishop, and now have returned to lead you as Archbishop of Miami. Pray especially that our seminarians grow in sanctity and faithfully serve you the Church; that they be always receptive of every spiritual gift, "for in our union with Christ he has blessed us by giving us every spiritual gift in the heavenly world." (Ephesians l:3)

Your contribution to the annual Seminary Burse Fund collection assists us in continuing and safeguarding that our seminarians, the future priests of your parish, receive the best formation possible. It is my hope that all our prayers, united to those of St. John Vianney, patron of priests, may bring about many holy men willing to serve the Church seeking the salvation of all souls.

For this reason, I especially encourage you to support the Seminary Burse Fund of the Archdiocese of Miami. Your generosity is a reminder of God's love for His children. Thank you, and may you receive the abundant blessings of the Lord bestowed upon you and your loved ones. With personal best wishes, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski Archbishop of Miami

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

All you who are thirsty, come to the water!

— Isaiah 55:1a

August 4, 2014

“Taking the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven, Jesus said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds”

What happened in that “deserted place” when Jesus fed the crowds can happen in our own homes; not that we can take a few of fish sticks and a couple of dinner rolls and feed five thousand unexpected guests, but we can reconnect as a family over the gifts of God’s good earth.

More astounding than Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand is Jesus’ transforming them into a community, a community who becomes one in their need, one in the bread they share, one in the love of Christ who has brought them together.

Jesus empowers every one of us to perform our own miracle by imitating His three actions in today’s Gospel: to “bless” and give thanks for what God has given to us; to “break” from our blessing –including our time and energy- in order to contribute to the good of all; to share – to both give and receive- to realize the joys of loving family and community.

- Karl Rahner
