A Message From Mr. Riley
S T. A N N C AT H O L I C S C H O O L
Sept. 30, 2016
Dear St. Ann Families:
On Wednesday, Fr. Craig Maxim said at our all school mass that he appreciated the warm welcome he has received here at St. Ann in his new role as associate pastor. The opening hymn for the all school mass was “All Are Welcome.”
Let us build a house where love can dwell
And all can safely live,
A place where Saints and Children tell
How hearts learn to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions,
Rock of Faith and vault of grace;
Here the love of Christ shall end divisions.
All are welcome, all are welcome,
All are welcome in this place.
As I reflected on these messages of welcoming, I felt a great sense of pride in St. Ann. We are a community of families that unites into one St. Ann Family, parish, and school. From time to time, like in any family, there will be differences in opinions, but if we respectfully listen to one another, try to empathize, and practice compassion, mercy and tolerance, we become stronger together. These days the news can make it seem as if all is tumultuous, which is why it is even more important that we make our school is a safe haven. From the beginning of the year, I’ve stressed to our outstanding teachers that as they prepare their excellent academic lessons, they need to be very intentional about cultivating a community of kindness. When students feel safe and cared for, they are more free to learn and excel academically. I might suggest you ask your child today not only what did they learn, but who they were kind to today.
Later in this bulletin, look for various steps we are taking in the classrooms to promote a positive school climate and eliminate bullying in all forms. As our archdiocesan theme reminds us, “Each child is a masterpiece of God created with a specific purpose.” We all bring something special and unique as gifts to the community.
Together, WE ARE…ST. ANN!
All the Best and God Bless!
Mike

International Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 5th!
Free Soccer Clinic on Thursday, October 6th from 6:00-7:30pm at Bishop Miege Doll Stadium for all boys and girls, grades K-8th. Please contact Coach Nate Huppe at [email protected] if you have any questions.
The Geography Bee is being moved to a later date in the first semes-ter. The National Geographic Society will not be releasing any materi-als, including the test questions, until Monday October 3. This would not allow the teachers enough time to determine the classroom winners prior to October 5 (the original scheduled date). As soon as the new date is confirmed, we will notify all families.
Thanks to everyone who has turned in their box tops! Please, keep them coming—we will be doing the first collection of the year in 2 weeks. Just be sure to double check the expiration dates and keeping clipping!

Dear St. Ann Family,
Predominately, schools are safe and nurturing places for students, and we are dedicated to making our school a safe learning environment for all students. However, bullying is a serious issue that every school faces. Research shows that more than half of all school-aged children will be involved in bullying this year and many more witnessing bullying on a regular basis.
At St. Ann, we believe in working together with parents to combat bullying. We know this problem isn’t confined to school grounds. Bullying at school affects and is affected by what happens at home between siblings, what happens in the neighborhood, and what happens when kids go online. We must work together to take immediate action, whether a child bullies, is a victim of bullying, or is a witness to bullying.
Here are some ways we are addressing bullying at St. Ann:
We have implemented Friendly School Plus, an evidence-based, school wide program, which contains lessons that effectively, reduce bullying and foster a caring culture for students.
We have two key focus virtues that we work on each month through our Virtuous Behavior Program. October’s focus will be loyalty and courtesy.
Our computer teacher Mrs. Micheletto teaches lessons about online safety, cyber-bullying and the student’s digital footprint.
Officer Wolfe takes time to visit with each class and speak about bullying from a personal perspective, cyber safety, and other issues.
In the spring we took a parent driven anti-bullying pledge together as a Parish, and some of our students were involved in developing a short film from Just Like You films.

Please know that we at St. Ann want all students to feel welcome and safe and are always working towards this goal. Listed above are only a few of the many ways we are trying to work towards building a positive culture and climate.

I encourage you to take a look at a couple of resources that can help in taking an active role in addressing bullying with your child. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know, so we may continue to work together against bullying.
Sincerely,
Felicia A. Torres

October is Respect Life Month for the Catholic Church in the United States. The dignity of the human person and respect for human life from conception to nat-ural death is a fundamental princi-ple of the social teachings of the Church and informs all of her ministry. In this month we pray especially for the most vulnerable of our society: the unborn, the dis-abled, the elderly, and the termi-nally ill.
What can we do?
Join St Ann, Fr Keith and fellow parishioners in the LIFE CHAIN this Sunday, October 2nd. This public witness to the sacredness of life is vital, especially during this election year. St Ann's will be gathering at the NE corner of 95th and Lee Blvd from 1:30-2:30. Pre-printed signs will be available.
Consider adding a short invoca-tion to your family prayer, during grace before meals or prayers before bedtime:
Holy Mary, Defender of the De-fenseless: pray for us!
Holy Mary, Defender of the Un-born: pray for us!
Support the St Ann BABY SHOW-ER for the Wyandotte Pregnancy Center. Bring in items for the center from October 9-30, to put in the crib in the vestibule of the Church or in the decorated boxes in the entryway to school.

In Mrs.Schafer’s homeroom, there are examples of Christian behavior all around us!
We know we are not perfect, but one thing we do each day, is try hard to walk along life’s journey more like Jesus.
Room 128 has nominated someone who stands out on a daily basis. Congratulations, Emma Goulding, you have been nominated as this week’s Christian Leader of the Week.
We thank you for reminding us how we should be more Christ-like each and every day.
Emma, you are a great friend who always listens. You are kind, caring, and supportive. You have great ideas that you are always willing to share. You always listen in class and you are always respectful to all the teachers.
Congratulations, Emma!

Hello St. Ann families!! I am so excited and honored that I am now apart of your community! It
has been such a blessing to be here this school year with my wonderful coworkers and your chil-
dren. I am Nebraskan, born and raised and will always be a Husker fan. I am the oldest of five chil-
dren and the daughter of two West African immigrants.
Kansas became my home when I began attending Benedictine College in 2011. I have a
huge place in my heart for Benedictine and definitely will always be a Raven. I graduated with a de-
gree in Biology and Secondary Education in 2015. I had many experiences in several different
schools and spent my student teaching semester in Winchester, KS at Jefferson County North High
School. I spent my first year teaching at Washington High School in KCK as 9th grade Biology teach-
er and Freshmen advocate. It was a great year, but I knew I was called to work with a Catholic com-
munity and I am very blessed to have found one!
Evan- my fiancé, and I are parishioners at Holy Trinity in Lenexa and will be getting married
there in 29 days! We are so excited to have become part of the Kansas City community and cannot
wait to start our family here.

We’re very excited as we kick off our Accelerated Reader program. The Accelerated Reader combines children’s literature with an innovative software testing and management system that gives students, teachers and parents excellent, accurate feedback on comprehension and reading performance. Participating in the Accelerated Reader program is as simple as 1,2,3.
1) The student selects a book in his or her reading range (ZPD) derived from the STAR test (Student Test of Ability in Reading) 2) The student reads the chosen book. 3) The student takes a multiple choice comprehension test administered by computer. The number of questions will be 5, 10 or 20 depending on the length and difficulty level of the book.
The Accelerated Readers management program gives students immediate feedback by awarding points based on the difficulty level of the book, the length in words, and the per-centage of questions answered correctly. (A score of 60% or higher is necessary to be awarded any points.) The management program also provides teachers and parents with an accurate measurement of each student’s reading performance and progress. These results may be shared with parents during conferences and may be sent home with each report card and progress report. September 22, 2016

AoK (Acts of Kindness) is the St. Ann service program for grades K-6. Twice a year, every grade participates in a different service project benefitting a charitable organization. This helps students learn about the power of giving and exposes them to concerns and issues in our community and the world.
In conjunction with these service projects, St. Ann has several col-lection drives for different items. It is our goal that families will be able to find the items to donate around the house, rather than pur-chasing new items. To help you plan for these events, here is a list of items we will be collecting at designated times throughout the year:
· Used shoes
· Gently used Halloween costumes
· Pop tabs
· Halloween candy
· Used backpacks and lunch boxes
· Cold weather items: hats, gloves, scarves, mittens
· Personal care products (travel sizes)
· Men’s jeans
Look for communication about AOK efforts in the weekly school newsletters for details about how your family can contribute. If you have any questions about AOK, you can contact Jenny Searles @ [email protected], Maria Ianni @ [email protected] or Heather Sullivan @ [email protected].
