The Scotts family, who run Hollyburton Park in Bolinda, have embraced the philosophy of sustainability.

Since arriving on the farm about 30 years ago, the Scotts have adapted their farming practices and diversified on their 178-hectare property.

Colita and Rob purchased the farm with a flock of white Suffolk sheep.

Feeling disheartened with wool prices, they began producing quilt wadding, made from the sheeps wool, for friends.

You need to do something specialised or find a niche market, Mr Scott says.

Since the Scotts arrived in Bolinda, they have had to diversify production on their land. As well as the quilt wadding, they produce organic pigs, cows, lambs and chickens, with their meat for sale at the farm gate.

The couples three children were born and home-schooled on the farm, and now they help run it. The certified-organic egg enterprise, overseen by 19-year-old Madelaine, is booming.

Madelaine has raised chickens for 11 years and built up her laying flock to about 1800 chickens, which produce about 500 dozen eggs a week.

In May, she completed a social media campaign that raised $68,000 for an egg cleaning and packing machine that will help her cut back the time she spends packing eggs and allow her more time with the chickens and to keep up with demand.

State opposition agriculture spokeswoman Jacinta Allan and Labor candidate for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas hit the campaign trail last week, visiting organic farmers and producers, including the Scotts, to learn about the changing nature of farming.

    Family farm gets clucky

Ms Thomas said farmers had to think dynamically to be successful. [Madelaine] is a 19-year-old running a poultry enterprise, she said. Shes a great story to put out there.

She is an inspiration to other young people that there is a real future in farming, for young women in farming, too, particularly in free range and organic.

    recognition they deserve.

Riddells Creek and Bolinda-Monegeetta fire brigades have been left devastated after thieves ransacked the stations overnight on Saturday.

Police have called for help to find those responsible. Items stolen included chainsaws and a CFA-marked Toyota HiLux with trailer.

Police believe the ute was driven from Riddells Creek to Melton before being dumped in Ferris Road and set alight.

The brigades shared in fighting the Mickleham fires that struck the Macedon Ranges in February.

Riddells Creek CFA captain Dave Thompson said a fund-raising campaign in the wake of the February fires had helped purchase the equipment that was stolen at the weekend.

Tens of thousands worth of gear was taken, he said. Sickening is the word to describe this.

The brigade had had a new truck for just one week when its vital fire-fighting equipment was stripped and stolen in the raid.

This issue put the brigade offline for most of Sunday, Mr Thompson said. During the night the community was at risk, and we didnt know until the morning. If we had gotten a call at night we wouldnt have been able to go.

Darraweit Guim CFA was targeted by thieves in March.

Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CorrectionA breakout quote contained in a story last week (Ranges plan protection deficit, Star Weekly, July 15) was incorrectly attributed to mayor Roger Jukes. The quote was, in fact, from Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau. The mistake was made during the sub-editing process. Star Weekly apologises for the error.

Information session for fire victimsVictims of the February 9 fires that impacted areas including Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Darraweit Guim, Monegeetta and Springfield can attend an information session with Maddens Lawyers, who are leading a class action. Law firm principal Brendan Pendergast will be in Kilmore tomorrow to update victims of the fire and answer questions about the case. He believes there are property owners who have grounds to sue for compensation who are yet to join the class action. The meeting is 7pm, Wednesday, July 23, at the Kilmore Trackside Restaurant, Golden Reign Room, East Street, Kilmore.

Residents input sought for plansTwo studies that will guide development in the town centres of Macedon and Mount Macedon have been released for residents feedback. The documents can be seen online, at council offices or at the Mount Macedon Trading Post, Sitka Cafe or Macedon Post Office. Submissions will be accepted until 5pm on August 26. Details: www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay or call 5421 9660.

Hand-woven garments will make a resurgence at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton this week as students prepare for a stage production portraying the schools 125-year history.

Stories of the Heart is a play that celebrates the schools history from the time the Mercy sisters stepped off the train at Kyneton and settled on High Street.

Its staging will coincide with the schools 125th anniversary celebrations, which kick off next Tuesday, July 29. The school opened on that day in 1889.

Former student Adrian Black, who graduated in 2012, wrote the script.

Celebrations will kick off with about 1000 staff, students and other guests taking part in a Mass led by Archbishop Denis Hart, along with the college chaplains.

The school will launch a Mercy heritage trail, which includes story boards to identify important features of the schools history.

There will be a carnival with proceeds being donated to Mercyworks, a not-for-profit organisation aimed at improving health and education for people in Australia and South East Asia.

Stories of the Heart will open at 7.30pm this Friday, July 25 and be backed up with performances on Saturday, July 26, and August 1-2, at the colleges Mary Moloney Theatre.

Pharmacists Steve Barker, Chris te Wierik, Michael Linton and their trained team can help clients with a range of health issues.

Our pharmacists conduct personal health consultations and are available to answer questions, Barker says.

Built by a local boutique builder in a quiet spot but close to everything in town, this house with about seven years on the clock still has its new-shine intact and, with its offering of four living zones and four bedrooms, has family stamped all over it.

Its the type of place that settles any disputes about the value of building anew as opposed to moving into a proven winner.

Past front gardens with virtually zero maintenance and under a porch, the front door swings open to a wide, tiled hallway with access to the remote-controlled double garage. The main bedroom to the right has streamlined roller blinds (found throughout), a walk-in robe and an en suite, decked

out in cream and charcoal, with a square partially-inset vanity basin. Three more good-sized bedrooms are off a hallway from the family area, as are a laundry, main bathroom, separate toilet, and a carpeted living room well suited as a playroom or even an office.

The meals zone is in a nook, the carpeted family room links with an integrated outdoor room, and a carpeted open rumpus room attracts northern light which spills into the entire living hub.

A stone-topped return island bench under trendy pendant lights defines the kitchen, which also has a two-door pantry, glass splashback, microwave nook and Technika

Bellissimo dishwasher and 900mm gas cooker.

The good-sized backyard has lawn and loads of scope for a gardener to create a haven or leave as is to allow the kids room to kick a footy or toss a ball towards wicket. The big side yard is mulched and dotted with specimen trees.

And a good walk down the main street will have new owners at Baringo Food & Wine Co, an espresso bar and providore proving popular with locals for good reasons: great Fair Trade coffee, creative home-style food.

DISCARDWHEN DOWNSIZINGOnce youve made the decision to downsize, your attention will need to turnto how exactly you can make this happen. After all, its more than just aboutfinding a smaller property - youll need to figure out what items you can dowithout when you make the move. Here are some odds and ends you mightwant to think about discarding when you start your new downsized life. Itsnot uncommon to collect large amounts of books over the course of yourlifetime. From fact to fiction, recipe books to travel guides, if your shelf is fullthen its time for a clear-out. How many times have you got swept away bythe latest kitchen craze and bought yet another implement thats not seenthe light of day for years? The kitchen is one room in the house that tends toaccumulate more useless items than most.Take a look through your drawersand cupboards and decide whats not needed any more. If you once hadseveral people living under one roof, its more than likely youve mounted upvarious different towels and bedding sizes. Moving into a one-bedroom housewith a double bed means you can get rid of all those guest towels and singlebedding sets, ensuring you only have what youll need once youve relocated.Weve all been on holiday and kept hold of a random collection of items forthe memories.Well, theres no better time to think about getting rid of them. The same goes for countless photos. Why not have them scanned onto a disc? Its much easier to store and will ensure all your memories are kept intact.

YOUR BORROWER PROFILEIf youre in the market for a residential property, whether for you and yourfamily or as an investment, chances are youll be borrowing. This leads toone of the most important questions all home buyers must answer: Howmuch can I borrow? The answer is a bit complicated. Exactly how muchyou can borrow may not be the same figure as how much you shouldborrow.Your first order of business should be to figure out how muchyou can comfortably repay. Neither you or your lender will want you todefault on a loan, so work out how much money youll be able to partwith each month for loan repayments while still leaving yourself enough tolive on.Once youve determined how much money you can safely borrow, youll need to start saving for your deposit. Most lenders will only allowyou to borrow up to 80% of the value of a home, meaning 20% will needto be paid by you. Keep in mind that you may be able to obtain a loanworth more than 80% of a propertys value, but this will likely come withother costs attached, such as lenders mortgage insurance. Before decidinghow much money to lend you, banks and other financial institutions willtake into account factors like your income, credit history, debt obligationsand fixed expenses. With that in mind, its never a bad idea to work onsaving and building up your financial profile before borrowing.Taking careof your finances can help you obtain a larger loan more quickly.

    By John Gascoigne

A gentle rain was falling at Digman Reserve, Newport, when a 194-centimetre behemoth batsman scored 90 off 30 balls then bowled gentle off-spin to a 12-year-old schoolboy.

Welcome to the open-age, enthusiastically multicultural Mid-Year Cricket Associations fifth annual competition.

Played from noon to 4.45pm on Saturdays on reliably green synthetic wickets usually surrounded by mud, the nine-week competition is for a growing army for which too much cricket isnt enough.

About half the 1400 players enlisted in 70 teams occupying four divisions across mainly the north and western suburbs are from the subcontinent where, famously, the game is played and watched with a quasi-religious fervour.

The growth has been startling since MYCAs initial year, 2010, whennine teams filled a single division in the carefully named mid-year association, winter having being eschewed for its negative connotations.

Winter players of 2014 are sensible dressers; hoodies are allowed, even encouraged. But they must be uniformly coloured, so if one players in orange, theyre all in orange, a motley crew of a dozen umpires (of which this writer was one) was instructed amid the oak panelling and historic photos of Cricket Victorias boardroom in Jolimont.

This writer prepared to duck or fling himself to the turf as the aforementioned behemoth batsman, South Australia-contractedallrounder Trent Lawford, laid waste to some rather ordinary, even damp-squid, bowling.

The straight sixes of Lawford were of a frightening velocity. Never in the hunt for

its288 target, Gellibrand sent in Ryan Caiger, aged 12, at No.11 to fight arearguard action.

With the Wyndhamvale bowlers halving their pace, Ryan, not much tallerthan his bat, took a single to mid-off and retired not out as Gellibrand succumbed for 128.

The conquering Wyndhamvale side had hit 25 sixes.

While sodden outfields require boundaries to be cleared on the full or first bounce, winter cricket can also cause players to be painfully grounded. Last year, a pace bowler did the splits as his front foot skidded on a slippery synthetic surface. While his teammates

celebrated a win, he lay on a hospital bed nursing torn adductor muscle fibres.

An unwritten rule governing the mid-year comp is to come off the ground if its dangerous or anyone drowns. The matches are played for fun. Whyelse would you play in the rain? When stumps approached at Newport, a catch-cry was, Cmon on, guys, its beer oclock.

Mid-year cricket was started by sports innovator and former motel owner-operator John Hammer of Brighton. In 1980, Hammer devised asuper-rules football competition for retired players in four age groupings, from over-35s to over-50s.

In 2003, Hammer, now 78, launched an over-60s Victorian competition for fellow cricket tragics.

Although most of the competitions players also bat and bowl in summer, a few are neophytes.

Strathmore Heights Cricket Club secretary Stephen Fielding never much liked cricket as a young man, but when histwo sons took up the game at school he joined summer cricket at the ageof 42.

Now, at 58, hes a wicketkeeper and is chuffed that he holds his clubs (summer and winter comp) record for most stumpings 64.
