WELCOME TO THE 2020-2021SCHOOL YEAR!Dear Takoma Families,

This is Ms. Deeny, your principal. We are so excited to welcomestudents back to school tomorrow, August 31! Don't forget totake a picture of your child tomorrow morning to celebrate thestart of school and remember this historic moment in education. It's going to be a great year ifwe work together to make it special.

It was wonderful to see so many students of all grades join our orientation on August 27th. Ihave some important updates about events coming up at school this week to support ourstudents for a strong start of the 2020-2021 school year.

August 31, 2020 – The First Day of SchoolStudents will report to their Takoma Advisory Period (TAP) as their �rst class and then followthe schedule attached with this message.Students will log onto their MyMCPS Classroom (Canvas). By now all students should havereceived their login and password which have not changed since last year. All MCPS teacherswill be using MyMCPS classroom this year and all TPMS teachers will have a universal homepage to their classroom that has the Zoom link available so that students can easily connect.Teachers will spend time the �rst week of school sharing strategies with students on howthey will be using this platform for the year.

TPMS ScheduleI have attached our schedule for the �rst three weeks of school with this message. Pleasereview it with your family. Note that this Friday, September 4 is a half day. The schedule is alsoavailable on our website. Teachers will spend time the �rst day describing our schedule tostudents and sharing strategies for students to better engage in online learning. myMCPS Parent Portal

This school year, Synergy ParentVUE will replace the Parent Portal as the primary home-to-school communication vehicle for schools to share information regarding grades, attendance,scheduling, and more. All MCPS Parents/guardians should have received a myMCPS ParentPortal activation letter via email or mail. Families of students who enroll in MCPS after thisinitial mailing will receive an activation letter within 1 week of the student’s enrollment date.Support guides for account activation are available in multiple languages. Parents can visit theMCPS website for more information and support guides on accessing the new Parent Portal atthe link included here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/mymcps-classroom/index.aspx

Chromebook and Instructional Materials DistributionWe distributed hundreds of Chromebooks last week! If you did not receive a Chromebook,please contact the school to see if we still have some available. We will be organizing aninstructional materials distribution the week of September 14. Students will not need theseinstructional materials to start the school year. Please stay posted for future communicationson this upcoming distribution.

ONLINE FARMS APPS ARE AVAILABLE NOWwww.MySchoolApps.com is NOW OPEN for parents to complete and submitthe 2020–2021 Online application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals!FAMILIES CAN APPLY NOW & AVOID LONGER PROCESSING TIMES IN SEPTEMBER!2020–2021 paper application forms in English and Spanish will be distributed to all MCPSSchools close to the �rst day of school. Households that complete an online application DONOT need to submit a paper application. Due to COVID-19 and planned remote learning in theFall, please encourage families to apply online! Translations in other languages are availablethrough the online application.

VaccinationsMaryland requires that all students receive required vaccinations in order to attend school.This requirement continues to be enforced for all Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)student to participate in virtual learning. Parents/Guardians must submit documentation ofrequired immunizations even if attendance will be virtual. I will be sharing more information onthe process for submitting documentation this coming week.

Message from MCPS about Recording InstructionWe will be recording lessons in order to support families and students, create �exibility inaccessing learning experiences when attending live instruction is a barrier, and enhancethe opportunity to review lesson content and resources.When students �rst log in, their video and audio is off by default. If students should not berecorded, they should leave these off.Recordings are protected, available only to students through a protected myMCPS site,unavailable for download, and will delete after 72 hours.We recognize that even with these protections there may be students or families who donot want their children’s images or voices to be captured. If you would like to have yourstudent opt out of being in the recording, they should keep their video off in each classfrom the start of the school year. Parents/guardians are asked to indicate an opt out inthe Parent Vue portal by September 11, 2020.

We were able to distribute $50 grocery gift cards to 225($11,250) families in need on Sunday, August 16. We continue to collect donations so we maycontinue distributing $50 grocery gift cards, and increase the number of shelf-stable boxeswe’re able to provide.

On September 2 we will have a distribution at TPMS of fresh produce + shelf stable food tothe �rst 300 families We have secured space at a local church to receive, sort, and assemble

our own boxes of shelf-stable food as well as a food distributor. We will continue to distributeweekly boxes of fresh produce.We want to remind you that every dollar donated goes directly and only into the hands of ourcommunity families in need. Over the past twenty weeks we have become a very e�cientteam. When we refer to the Takoma Park Middle School Cluster, you should understand thatincludes the help and counsel of the Montgomery County Public School infrastructure - eachof the schools counselors, ESOL teachers, Blair school counselors, the City of Takoma Parkand county social workers. With the help of all of these people and organizations, we havequick and direct contact with families who need help. Rest assured that we are reaching farinto the community - all across Takoma Park and the folks from the East Silver Springneighborhood.
