National Symposium on Space Technology for Food & Environmental Security

www.isrs2012delhi.org

BACKGROUND

MAJOR THEMES

Advances in India’s space program are a symbol of the country’s sophisticated

technological abilities and its growing regional and global prestige. Recent

developments in space technology coupled with information and

communication technology (ICT) have expanded the opportunities to achieve

the sustainable agricultural, economic and social developments. New

applications and services in the fields of environment, natural resources, defense

applications, regional development, oceanography, disaster management,

forestry and social developments have emerged due to integration of satellite-

based remote sensing with GIS and GPS.

The vast potential of space technology has to be harnessed fully and successfully

to ensure food security for the Indian population, which is racing towards 1.6

billion mark by 2050. To accomplish this objective, the food grain production

must increase from the current level of 250+ to 280 million tonnes by 2020

without degrading the environment, which is currently a major challenge for the

scientific community. The issue of how this production target can be achieved

needs to be addressed urgently with the help of multi-dimensional research

advancements carried out in other fields along with the help of very strong and

versatile space technology tools. In the recent past, effective use of reliable

information from existing Earth observation systems, has helped to great extent

enhancing food and environmental security.

However, the latest developments and their applications in these areas

need to be shared, debated and assessed by the scientific community. Keeping

this in view, a national symposium on Space Technology for Food and

Environmental Security is being jointly organized by Indian Society of

Remote Sensing and Indian Society of Geomatics during December 5-7,

2012 at New Delhi.

There will be three categories of presentations namely (i) Lead / Invited Papers,

(ii) Oral Presentations and (iii) Poster Presentations in the following major

thematic areas:

1. Natural resources monitoring and management for enhancing food security

2. Surveillance and defense applications

3. Advances in sensor technology and associated developments

www.isrs2012delhi.org

National Symposium on Space Technology for Food & Environmental Security

4. Soft computing and advance processing techniques

5. Meteorology, climate change and environmental security

6. Ocean monitoring and applications

7. Mineral exploration and geological applications

8. Spatial technology: potentials and applications

9. Disaster monitoring and management

10. Forestry and habitats

11. Remote sensing for regional development

12. Planetary science/exploration

In addition, there will be one special session each by (a) the Indian Society of

Geomatics and (b) the Indian Society of Agrophysics, covering themes on

Application of Geomatics and Agricultural Physics for Food and

Environmental Security, respectively. Further, the annual general body

meetings of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing and the Indian Society of

Geomatics will be held separately.

Original research papers, covering one or more of the above themes are invited for

presentations. Extended abstracts in English not exceeding 500 words may be

submitted online through the website or can be mailed

directly to . Further details regarding editorial

instructions for abstracts submission are also available on the website. Any further

clarification may be obtained by sending an email to the Organizing Secretary

. Full length papers should be prepared in the format

of Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing

. Selected papers will be peer reviewed

and published in a special issue of the journal.

The symposium will be preceded by three pre-symposium tutorials during

December 3-4, 2012 on the following topics:

1. Advances in Spectrometry in Earth Remote Sensing

2. Computational Intelligence in Remote Sensing

3. LiDAR Technology and its Applications

A common tutorial on ‘Bhuvan’ will be arranged for all the participants.

ABOUT ISRS

http://www.isrsindia.in

ABOUT ISG

http://www.isgindia.org

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) is the country’s premier

national institute for agricultural research, education and extension

. The Green Revolution stemmed from the fields of

IARI. The growth of India’s agriculture during past more than 105 years, is

closely linked with the researches done and technologies generated by

the Institute. Over the years, IARI has excelled as a centre of higher education

and training in agricultural sciences at national and international levels. The first

work in remote sensing application for agriculture namely detection of coconut

root wilt disease from aerial remote sensing was carried out from this institute.

Since then, the institute has been working on remote sensing applications in

agriculture and has done many projects in collaboration with ISRO and its sister

organizations. The institute was also the first organization to introduce courses

on basic and applied remote sensing for post graduate students.

Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS) was established in 1969 with the

main objective of advancement and dissemination of remote sensing

technology in the fields of mapping, planning and management of natural

resources and environment by organizing seminars/symposia and by

publishing a quarterly journal (Journal of Indian Society of Remote Sensing),

bulletins, proceedings, etc. Starting with 56 members, the Society has now

grown into a premier professional body with membership of over 3900

members. More details can be seen on the society’s website

. The Delhi Chapter of ISRS is regarded as one of

the old active ISRS Chapters in the country.

Indian Society of Geomatics (ISG), established in 1993, is a premier

Society of professionals and institutions involved in promoting and

popularising Geomatics in India. It has more than 1600 Members. It has

fifteen-very active Regional Chapters. The Society is publishing a peer-

reviewed journal named “Journal of Geomatics”. The journal covers all

aspects of Geomatics which includes GIS, GPS, Photogrammetry,

Cartography, Remote Sensing, Surveying, Spatial Data Infrastructure

and Technology. More details can be seen on Society’s website
