By LAURA TOMLINSON ZOMBIES, tropical landscapes, an emerald mine and a mystery — what more could an adventure story need? Nothing, according to Kolbe Catholic College students, who are putting on a production of Zombied! The Mary McMahon and Don Woodward-written play follows the experience of several explorers who go to the Caribbean on an anthropological study. They come across various characters, both sinister and friendly, but sense all is not well on the island. The island’s main income comes from its coffee plantation, but as the explorers soon discover, there’s far more happen- ing in this sleepy tropical paradise. TEE drama teacher and Zombied! director Katherine Gauci said the family play was a real adventure story. ‘‘Despite the zombies, it’s much more funny that scary,’’ Ms Gauci said. She said the students were enjoying getting into character, and were looking forward to later in the rehearsals when they would be slathered in special effects makeup. Zombied! will be presented on May 15 and 16 at 7.30pm at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Tickets cost $12 adults, $10 students and pensioners and $40 for a family pass for two adults and two children. Call 9592 1500 for more information. Theatre call for magician A MAGICIAN and a ventriloquist are on the casting wish list for Kwinana Theatre Workshop member Val Fischer, who is planning an old time music hall production to celebrate the company’s 40th anniver- sary. The show will be staged in November and Fischer is keen to organise the cast early. She said the production would follow the format that was so popular with audiences in the UK before World War II, with a barbers’ quartet, jazz singers, a mini melodrama and novelty segments, all presented by an MC with plenty of dash and theatrical flair. ‘‘The show is a big undertaking and will require a lot of planning but it will be a lot of fun and a great way to celebrate our anniversary,’’ Fischer said. Anyone interested in taking part can phone her on 9419 3354 or email [email protected] Polish and glitz from Pot Pourri SHOW REVIEW A Night on Broadway Pot Pourri Review:Teena Raffa-Mulligan MELBOURNE group Pot Pourri took an enthusiastic audience on a musical journey to legendary Broadway during a performance at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Thursday night. Sopranos Tania de Jong and Rebecca Bode, tenor Jon Bode, baritone Jonathan Morton and pianist Rebecca Chambers presented a glittering evening of popular opera, musical theatre and song. Witty repartee linked the numbers and there was a strong element of audience interaction throughout the program, which was presented with polish and pizzazz. Chambers’ fingers danced across the piano keys in a solo that showcased her virtuosity, slipping effortlessly from classical passion to the romance of light opera and the spirit of jazz. Pot Pourri is an apt name for a group that at one moment has the audience spellbound with a moving rendition of The Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera and the next is launching into a lively presentation of America. They have toured overseas on more than 40 occasions and if audience response is any indication, Mandurah will no doubt be on the itinerary for a return performance.
