meet maestro sawa

Victor Sawa is a triple threat of talent, experience and personal dynamism in the orchestral world. Now Music Director of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, he holds similar positions with orchestras in Sudbury and Regina. He was prev-iously Resident Conductor with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (1993-1997), Music Director with the North Bay Symphony, the Guelph Youth Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Orchestra. He also served as Principal Clarinet with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. He has been guest conductor for orchestras across the country.

Maestro Sawa has received many awards and honours, including three Canada Council awards for Conducting, a Grand Prix du Disque—Best Chamber Music Recording (Canadian Chamber Ensemble), a Grammy award (with the New England Ragtime Ensemble), and the Tanglewood Festival award for Outstanding Musician. A Montreal native, Mr. Sawa holds a Bachelor of Music with Distinction from McGill University and an Honours Masters of Music Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and is also a graduate of the Pierre Monteux School for Advanced Conductors.

meet jeans ‘n’ classics’ ABBAmaniaMichelle TrumanMichelle is from Milton, Ontario. She grew up in the film and TV industry, which led her into the music world. She has starred in many musical productions such as: Rocky Horror Picture Show, Footloose, Anne of Green Gables, British Invasion, and Little Shop of Horrors.

Monica TietzMonica Tietz has been a professional singer for over 15 years and hails from Penetang, Ontario. Monica also is an excellent drummer and played drums and sang for a popular group called Bounty. She was also the lead in a production called Jagged Little Pill, and the theatre show The Spice Girls.

Mathew WhaleMathew is from Hanover, Ontario. He studied music at the Toronto Conservatory for five years. He has been a professional piano and keyboardist for over 20 years. Mathew has performed in the musical productions of Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John and Pink Floyd. He does a lot of studio session work and is rated as one of the best

piano players in Canada. The keys are a big part of the

ABBA sound.

Nick PattisonNick is from Bridge, England, but is now based in Ajax, Ontario, where he teaches music when not on the road with ABBAmania. At the age of 10 he won the American Guild of Music Award for guitar. Nick has been in musical productions ranging from nightclub acts, playing funk, rock,  country and blues to theatre shows. He has an Arts degree from Queens University and writes, plays and sings his own music. He is currently recording his own music and has radio air play here in Canada.

Mitchell Tyler (Bass)Mitchell Tyler, a London, Ontario resident, is an Honours Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education graduate of the University of Western Ontario and has been a professional musician since 1987. As a freelance electric and upright bassist, conductor and music educator he has done everything from theater, concert and symphony work to session, club and corporate engagements. He is a part time contract teacher of string music and classical guitar with the Thames Valley District School Board in London, Ontario.

As a long-time member of the Jeans ’n’ Classics Band, Mitchell has worked with many orchestras in Canada and the United States. He has shared the stage with Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Lawrence Gowan (Styx), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Alan Frew (Glass Tiger), as well as Amy Skye, Rich Little, Joan Rivers, Mickey Rooney and Donald O’Connor.

Jeff Christmas (Drums)Jeff is a composer, arranger, conductor, drummer, percussionist and trumpeter. He studied at York University, the University of Western Ontario, and Berklee College of Music, Boston, where he majored in Film Scoring and Composition. He has performed with symphony orchestras across North America, as has appeared internationally with such notable artists as Denny Doherty, The Rankin Sisters, Ashley McIsaac, J.P. Cormier, and Michael Burgess, and recently conducted a tour with Roger Hodgson (Supertramp). As musical director/arranger for the opening of the MTS Center, Winnipeg, he conducted the WSO and guest artists Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Tom Cochrane and Chantal Kreviazuk. During his tenure as composer in residence with Orchestra London, he wrote several major compositions including “Algoma,” a tone poem for orchestra, and Concerto for English Horn. Jeff has worked with Amy Sky, Marc Jordan, Lorraine Segato (The Parachute Club), Alan Frew (Glass Tiger), Rik Emmit (Triumph) Brian Vollmer (Helix), Lawrence Gowan, Jim Witter, Thomas Wade and The Spoons.

Jeff’s original compositions are in demand internationally. His music for the Opening Ceremonies of the Canada Games pre-miered on national television in the sum-mer of 2001. Jeff has worked on various

feature films and television programs with credits including High Point Casinos (Global TV), National Aboriginal Achievement Awards (CBC) and Chatroom (HBO, BET). His most recent commissions include “Bluewater Portrait” for solo oboe and orchestra, and Canadian Voyage, a five-movement suite for french horn and orchestra.
