DATE : 05 - 08 - 2016 SSK TIMES ENGLISH MONTHLY. GADAG 2 P RAKSHA BANDHAN Raksha Bandhan as a religious festival focuses on performing the aarti and saying prayers prior to tying the rakhi. The prayers draw in- spiration from the Hindu scriptures. The other religious feature is the application of the tilak on the forehead of the person wearing the rakhi. Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literally means “the tie or knot of pro- tection”. The word Raksha means protection, whilst Bandhan is the verb to tie. It is an ancient Hindu festival that ritually celebrates the love and duty between brothers and their sisters. The sister performs a Rakhi ceremony, and then prays to express her love and her wish for the well being of her brother; in return, the brother ritually pledges to protect and take care of his sister under all circumstances. It is one of the several occasions in which family ties are affirmed in India. The festival is also an occasion to celebrate brother-sister like fam- ily ties between cousins or distant family members, sometimes be- tween biologically unrelated men and women. To many, the festival transcends biological family, brings together men and women across religions, diverse ethnic groups and ritually emphasizes harmony and love. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Shrāvaṇa, and typically falls in August every year. Deity Lakshmi tied a rakhi onto the wrist of the King Bali from hell thus making him Her brother and liberated Lord Narayan i.e.Vishnu. That day as per the Hindu lunar calendar was ‘Shravan Paurnima’. “By tying this wristband (raksha) onto your wrist I am binding you just like the powerful and generous King Bali was bound by it. O wrist- band, do not get displaced.” The Bhavishya Puran states that Raksha Bandhan was basically meant for kings. A new custom of tying rakhis began from the historical ages. The sister is supposed to tie the rakhi to the brother’s wrist. The feeling behind this is that the brother should become prosperous and he should protect the sister. On the day of Shravan Pournima high speed frequencies of Yama principle are activated in the universe. Particles of the Absolute Fire El- ement (Tej) are generated due to the friction between these high speed frequencies. These particles of Tej are emitted into the atmosphere. They become inert because of their union with the ground particles and they create a covering on the ground. This is called raksha.
